But in the Philippines, we never forget such songs. They are always there: being played in the radio, sung by contestants in TV, sung by friends in videoke, posted by acquaintances in facebook. The reason we are very good at covers is ‘cause we’ve heard these songs from the womb. A Filipino may not know exactly what the lyrics are, but you can be sure we know the melody of it inside our minds. It’s like muscle memory to us.
@SwiftieBlink033 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. My father doesn't give a damn about KPop. He'd rather have Frank Sinatra, but he knows how to jam with us. He hums and dance to it. The range of music influence is so big. As long as it's music, we dig it.

Her band mates are veterans. Jon directs music. Jake played guitar before playing bass. LA played on a tour cruise ship and he can play the violin. I believe Romeo is the most senior of the group and he also have extensive experience. I feel it is rare to have a team that is a match made in heaven, but this helps them go into flow state.

They all.stay in Gigis house during this pandemic. The band, 7 guys sleeps on the floor of her living room, they are almost family. Gigi is taking care of her.Mom sick with cancer, she's the breadwinner. They do all this cover in a small garage next to her house. There is a video interview of journalist Karen Davila showing their living arrangement to avoid exposure to covid.

Live bands in the Philippines are one of the most underrated performers and they do take song requests all they time, so they are very well versed in music. They are literally everywhere prepandemic.
@One.Zero.One1012 жыл бұрын
Yep any bar you walk into will have a live band that sings requests. It's like a job requirement. 😆 Sometimes it's like a challenge, we were staying at a hotel last night and my uncle requested a really old song that he thinks the band wouldn't know. The band just looked up the chords and they played it beautifully.

Filipino musicians and artists are just about everwhere in the global scene... Las Vegas, music lounges, cruise ships, ktv/karaoke bars, night clubs and lounges, talent shows, hotels and theaters, KZbin, etc.... even in shower rooms singing their hearts out.
@calixtokamantigue32502 жыл бұрын
that is true even the remote provinces in china, japan malaysia or in africa you will find a filipino band singing in a bar or hotel lounges.
@arquelyap80793 жыл бұрын
Bands here in PH used to work for clubs or bars that people can request songs so they have the knowledge or hint to what songs are mostly requested by Filipinos and most of them also worked overseas as a band or musicians in lounges of a ship and hotels or bars. So they have extensive number of songs that they know how to play so they just need the song's note sheet for guide. They know the songs by heart. And it is hardly to know a Filipino who doesn't love music and would not listen to it in almost a day. So just imagine how many songs does a professional musician here in PH can play.

Better Days or this type of songs is very common in the Philippines.Filipino singers prefer the more difficult songs or songs with difficult arrangement since singing competitions here are VERY TOUGH. It does not matter if they are classic old songs or the modern ones as long as the song is difficult enough to win a competition.Most of our singers here like Gigi, Katrina, Morisette etc. even the Queen Regine were "kontiseras" or experienced singing contestants,which explain their caliber.
@SwiftieBlink033 жыл бұрын
Pre pandemic, we all used to go to outdoor bars and chill with local live bands. When there's a live band, 100% sure the waiter have a pen and a paper for song request. More song request means more beers and food orders ☺️. Sometimes, you can also perform if you can sing or do a duet with them just to jam and that usually is so entertaining.

Back in the normal days pre-pandemic, when you go to a bar or any place with a live band here in the Philippines, some bands would grant song request from the audience and they'll do it if they know the song. "Better Days", like some of the old songs she sang, is a popular karaoke song here.
@meshparrenas42853 жыл бұрын
Funny, i remembered watching them live in live sessions... somebody requested her to sing the song BIZARE LOVE TRIANGLE.. i actually got excited coz i sooo love that song!... but surprisingly she doesnt know the song... all her band mates knows it... so the other members end up singing the song instead.... instead of her.... it still sounded good though!... 😄

ive been in a band in the past .. and for youre band to be able to get gigs in bars, there is this thing we call STOCKING SONGS ... he practice songs thats on our alley, we dont necessarily play it oftenly but we just study those songs so that when someone requesr for it .. we can play it ... the same goes for singers. thats why the pro filipino singers seems to know every song its bc they have been singing all the time, if he/she is a pro then THATS ALL HE DO!

Here in the Philippines, its kinda given.. If its a LIVE Band, it means people can request any song on that moment. That's the live band culture here. Hence, the singer and the band make sure they know a lot of songs. In restaurants here that has live band, people can request any song for free or a customer can give the band money as appreciation. In conclusion, its not a big surprise for Filipino people.
@edwindelfin78943 жыл бұрын
these songs are included in the play list ...... its like if they have to play for 3 hours.. they will make a 2 hours long play list then the 1 hour is dedicated to request.... and if you want to earn, you must know the requested song ...song request is written on a paper napkin,whit tip inside,will be given to the waiter then the waiter will give it to the band
@lorenz50733 жыл бұрын
Jajaja funny how you guys described "these types of song" as not as popular or as forgotten gems since these songs never left the Philippines ever since. Until now, these types of song are still the norm in karaokes. In fact it is rare to hear Filipinos sing relatively newer songs in the karaoke, it is usually 2005-downwards types of songs you hear most often. Filipinos love old stuffs and this is btw coming from a genz😉

I think Filipinos loves meaningful lyrics. One of those is Better days.
@One.Zero.One1012 жыл бұрын
Yeah a lot of ballads/R&B that have been forgotten in America are still being played everyday on Filipino radio. I was watching some American reactors and I was surprised a lot of them didn't know "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". That song is like a requirement in karaoke machines, television shows, and live gigs in the Philippines.
@iamjv2k3 жыл бұрын
The popularity of karaoke and its availability to the entire country provides familiarity, if not knowing it entirely, to any song be it from the 60's or present times. Radiostations still plays randomly old songs. The normalcy of cover songs (old and ancient) in the current times by popular current singers also contributes to the familiarity and constant appreciation of old songs. And as you have already learned, its live bands that dominates the bar/club scenes here. That means that the live band would normally take song request from the crowd. Having said that, the band has to have a broad knowledge of songs (old and current), singing it (for the singer) and playing it (for the band). You have watched some of Katrina Velarde's regular bar gig. There are list of songs prepared by her and the band but there were impromptu ones as well as requested by the crowd. Sometimes this impromptu songs involves a bar goer as well especially if he/she is a known singer too. For example, Boguy and Katrina's duet at the latter's gig. I hope this answers your questions why the band knows to play a requested song. Same holds true for the singer. This also answers why a 7 year old kid can sing a song by Whitney or any old songs for that matter because of karaoke and its presence still in the current times as you could still hear them on radio stations or watch a cover by an artist on TV
@nik0lan0elle3 жыл бұрын
Yeah well song requests during live band performance is common here in the Philippines. My friend is a guitarist. He has like stock songs that he practices daily in case it's requested during gigs. Better Days is pretty common. People even sing it in Karaoke hehehe

it's natural now for them to instinctively react to each other. partly because of lockdowns, they literally live and breathe the same air. the boys sleep together in the living room of gigi's apartment. it's like they're all her kuyas (older brothers). their director lives across the street and that's where their literal garage band is. i can only imagine living near them... it's sure to be like getting a free concert everyday! part of her passion also comes from wanting and needing to help her mom fight cancer.

I have a close friend who's a singer. She sings with her band in bars, restaurants and hotel lounges. They usually prepare a repertoire for every performance but they also accept song requests. They also usually perform for 1-2 hours and have two sets a night. Live bands in the PH (also in cities like Dubai where there are a lot of live PH bands that perform in hotels) have to have experience and knowledge with different songs from different eras and different genres. You should be able to sing and play a whole wide range of songs - from classics, rock, modern pop, etc.
@BastiXIII3 жыл бұрын
A lot of musicians/bands in the Philippines or most likely like any other show band in the world either practice a lot of stuff, or they have sheets it maybe in chords form like you get in jazz sheets or in notes and they're just good at sight reading. Combine that with hours and hours of playing together.

here in the philippines, there are bars and restaurants that live band plays and people could request songs and the band and the singer could do impromptu. so most musicians here must really be good and have to be quick and work well together to be able to play in am instant and because of this, it tend to be easy for them to just play because as time goes by they learn different songs and widen thier setlists.. it takes time to get to this level of course. im sure gigis band had years of experience in the GIG scene, so yeah...

The songs Gigi sings are standards in the Philippine music circuit. Musicians need to learn all these by heart since they can do session gigs for other bands. The list is about 200 songs. You would notice when a performance only plays songs on the list it means there is a session musician present. Live performers know the songs like the back of there hands. Filling in and little adlibs are well calculated. That is why it always feels tight and looks well rehearsed.
