Wow! I am so sorry you lived this nightmare. We had a 106 acre farm with a nonprofit school on it that served poor children that lived in a trash dump in Nicaragua for 8 years. Long story short, the farm was stolen and our school. We spent so much money and time trying to get it back but everything is so corrupt in Nicaragua. This was over two years ago. I still live with PTSD from the corrupt lawyers, judges and police chief. It really was sad because it was the children from the school that suffered the most.

Sorry to hear your story also, you know the police we used to have before the communist take over from Cuba was very friendly with Americans & other people but it was Jimmy Carter who made everything possible for this criminals to take over & destroy everything, no only that but these people here exported communism to El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela etc etc. Of course Jimmy Carter didn't act alone the Democrat party has helped the Sandinistas for over 50 years even before the take over. Most people in Nicaragua are not like what you see in these problems these are just thieves with uniforms, nice dress or friendly faces but big pockets.

He was a millwright and had moved a power station from the United States down to Nicaragua and was setting it up with a crew down there. I think there was some kind of political uprising or violence going on down there at the time. I didn’t have a very good relationship with him and wasn’t very close so he wasn’t Super communicative with me, but when I asked him about Nicaragua, like what was it like and what was going on with that, he could not speak he just cried. This is a man that never cries, but that’s the only time I ever saw him cry.

I just returned from visiting SJDS to scope out the city and visit the day school to see if it’s a good fit for my family to move. I loved everything about the city and the school. However I was extremely anxious about the way people drive in Nicaragua in general. Even our shuttle from Managua to SJDS and back was terrifying, the car we rented was not well maintained and the tire popped (thank God while it was parked and not while it was being driven up or down a hill) and a taxi we took in Managua shut out on us 3 times mid drive. The more I hear this story, the more it sounds like everyone in Nicaragua was trying to figure out how to shake down these people somehow. If it were me ( i lived as an expat in latin america for many years), I would have told them to do their worst since I was broke and innocent. At some point, they realize the amount of money they can squeeze out of you is not worth the effort of putting on a big charade. I am surprised the police chief didn't suggest you pay a specific sum to them and be done with it. Gringos are so naive to elaborate shakedowns. Once again, I bet the motorcyclist wasn't related to the President (or anyone else of significance).

@@allisonsjourney I think it's a standard "Man in the Middle" scam. They were pretending to be the family. They were going to get the payment in cash, then claim that the family "filed anyway and double crossed them" and take off with the money. They were trying to get paid for not doing any work (easily weren't even lawyers, lots of people pretending to be in SJDS aren't licensed) AND trying to steal the family's payment. It's the exact same scam that real estate agents sometimes do where they take off with a house payment. OR MAYBE, they intended to collect a double sized payment and would tell the family you only offered half and tell you that they demanded more and only steal the difference. But to do that, they would needed to have arranged with the family already which they didn't. So a risk but not likely what they were planning. They were definitely going to just steal it all.

San Juan del Sur and its surrounds are a hot bed of legal scams against expats. The area has what is called the "expat pyramid scheme". It's basically an enclave and because of that, it is FULL of lawyers, real estate agents, paralegals and others that almost universally aren't above board. When living in Nicaragua, general advice is even if you live in the SJDS area, you hire all your professionals from other cities as while it is possible that a legit person works in SJDS, you'll never find reliable references and you are always taking a huge risk. It's a massive industry there - literally the primary economic engine is scammer expats that move into town. Because of the enclave aspect, there's no checks and balances on it as most of it is perpretrated by expats themselves.
