That was absolutely mind blowing!!!! First of all, that Jaco solo was probably the greatest bass solo in history, and I've never heard anyone, in all my 63 years on this planet, play that solo as flawlessly and as brilliantly as you did. I'm just breathless!!!

Evan Marien suggests to do the B-E-F#-B with the B and E on the low E string and the F# and B on the A string, both with the first finger shifting positions and being lined up for the C on beat 2. What do you think of this fingering? Which is more accurate to how Jaco played it?

Havona is probably the greatest bass solo of all time. All of Jaco's genius reaches its peak refinement and unity. Absolutely timeless.... Great playing as usual Anthony. Quick question: on the ascending section (6:30) of the second phrase what do you think of using an open A and open D as a set up for catching the E octave at the 12th fret on the E string? I find it makes the subsequent D Lydian line a lot more accessible and fluid; it also reminds me of how Jaco uses the open A string on Teen Town for his ascending second phrase on the F7 of that track.

That's a great breaking down, as others you do!! When I was transcribing it I had an impression Jaco might have played last three upper notes (A D A) of that first phrase - before the melody, as natural harmonics on 7th fret. They really rings like that when you slow it down. At least i hear them that way. Then you avoid that jump and stay almost in the same position. Although later he seems to play them like you are showing.

Can make a video breaking down some Evan Marien licks. I'm suspecting that most of it is pentatonic based but just want to be sure.
@AnthonyMuthurajah6 жыл бұрын
hey man! I'm personally not a huge fan of that sound but you're right about the pentatonics. He spreads them across the strings real well and doubles a lot of notes, something that jaco popularized.
@KingPorter6 жыл бұрын
Yeah not really a fan of it either. But I think initially when I hear someone play fluently lots of notes, I kinda revert back to that beginner for a second and then once I listen instead of watching, I can hear exactly what it is. I've been playing for 24 yrs but because I'm doing more electric playing now i find myself being intimidated by the awesome execution some of these guys (including you) are able to achieve. But yes, I not really loving what he does, it seems more gimmicky to me than musical. I do think as he continues he'll get it to a musical place. But thank you...

Anthony maybe you could do a "Sean Malone Errata" video; both these licks are written differently in his Jaco book - and apparently incorrectly - from your versions. How about you cover that famous 16th-note lick of Jaco's from his "Bright Size Life" solo - also incorrectly written in the Malone book.

So..., I've been listening to your and other players' versions and I thought I was actually more right than you and the other bassists with my "B major arpeggio" theory or people starting on "B" from the "E" string, but, on the original recording, but, at least the first of the 3 or 4 times Jaco plays that phrase, what Jaco is really paying is: a 16 note rest on the down beat, then, a muted or grace F# - G - B - C - E F# - D - D - A - F# - D - B - C - G - E - E onto the "head" and I think he plays from the higher muted "F#" or from the 14th fret on the "E" string. Slow the tempo down to about 20%, you may or will be able to hear it and listen to Zawinul's keys as he also plays that line, but, it's not starting from the "B". I think the original way Jaco played is a little less complicated than some people may think.
