Hey, for those of you who might have missed it, Anthony gives the harmonic context for his phrases at the very beginning. Try using the same phrase over different chords. It's great ear-training and it opens your mind to other sounds...

a wonderful presentation, two very great bassists on the one hand and a springboard for "new" fantastic interpretations on the other hand. Super clip and it's true: copying slows down your own capacity ...

I'd like to see you tackle some Deicide, Necrovation, Obscura. Very curious to see how your playing would transition in a metal context. Been here since the beginning and my knowledge of the bass guitar has increased immensely. Thank you!
@AnthonyMuthurajah6 жыл бұрын
I love Obscura! I used to listen to a ton of necrophagist, cannibal corpse too haha. Good times. I come from a metal background (mostly thrash and progressive though) and tbh it’s deeply engrained in my heart and soul. Easily one of the most expressive styles and I feel that carries forward into my “jazz” playing. Thanks btw! I’m glad you dig the channel. Cheers man!

Great video man, I appreciate you going into depth. I’m going through a similar thing having learning so many Janek tunes and listening to him the past 2-3 years. And before even watching this video, I’ve strayed away from playing his tunes or seriously listening to him the past couple months to attempt to build my own vocab/sound. Also, I’ll be that annoying guy and ask what pickups are those? They look remarkably similar to the DiMarzio model j p/us I have in my four string Squier, and they’re easily my favorite passive pickups.

Thanks for contribution, it's great when good players share their wisdom! Do you think that creating your own lines containing different musical content, or creating lines of consepts you're trying to internalize is the way forward?
@AnthonyMuthurajah6 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! And yes, that is absolutely it! Get creative, explore. Take what you like and milk it then throw it away. That will help develop vocabulary AND help you find YOUR sound. Cheers ;)

Hi Anthony I had a sugestion a few videos back, about metal bass playing (Dream Theaer, Meshuggah...) I would like to remind you of that :) And I have a question: What are the albums by Hadrien Feraud that you would recommend? Like a must listen Hadrien Feraud list Thanks Cheers from Portugal And keep doing a great job
@AnthonyMuthurajah6 жыл бұрын
Yessir. I still remember! Just trying to find the right material to put into an educational context. Check out Hadriens 2nd record titled ' Born in the 80s '. Some serious grooves in there! AND check out this group called Spirit Fingers. Their debut album is out and is self titled. Hadrien smashes it to bits. Such a beast!

Anthony I saw an interview where Hadrien said that he encountered younger players who sounded like him and at first he was charmed initially but quickly grew tired of it and found it highly annoying. Thats one of the reasons he enjoyed playing with Federico Malaman because he finally encountered someone who was gifted with great skill but did his own thing. By the way, what do you think of this young girl from India Mohini Dey ? And yes I know its hard for a guy on your level to be put on the spot and asked about others. Thanks again for the great video it reminds me how much I need to learn but its a fun journey!
@AnthonyMuthurajah6 жыл бұрын
In all fairness, early Feraud sounded very much like some players ( i don't want to name them ). It's like a rite of passage before you find yourself. To me it'll always be an honor if someone chooses to play my lines but there's a side of me which wants them to move on from there, not out of spite or annoyance. In my honest opinion, Mohini is a talented bass player but it's just not my vibe at all. And yes, it's hard to be put on the spot and asked about my opinion about other bass players hahaha

Yes!! not licks. Learn then unlearn and rearrange phrases. Use the alphabet and be creative. Don't just recite licks strung together.
