Are you actually watching TV while you were playing? I’ve never seen anyone make this look so easy. Beautifully played, Sir. Nice one.

I've watched videos on this and faked my way through fingerings for months. You break down the chords, feel and ideas so effortlessly. It has given me new life and motivation to feel comfortable playing this tune. Excellent job - you're such a sensible teacher. Keep up the awesome work

It’s not often I come across a bass player that blows my mind. Lots of great technicians out there with no feel. You on the other hand have insane feel and technique. I was fortunate enough to study with the late Joel DiBartolo and he was a player that had incredible feel and technique . You approach to the bass was what he subscribed to. So I in turn subscribed to your channel.

My Christmas present to myself is to finally learn Donna Lee. This video and your insight will be a great help. Thanks for what you are doing and I hope every bass player who is benefiting from your teaching will find a way to support your channel. If we each do even a little, it will all add up and enable you to keep doing this! Thank you!

Anthony you have such great feel and expression - dexterity...and your sound is amazing. I have been playing bass for many years. Just recently started working on Donna Lee...omg. It’s a real workout! Even slow . Thank you for sharing these amazing vids. Sooo inspiring. Looks/sounds like that neck must be pretty flat and a super low action???? Thank you!!

Great thanks for the advice , I have tried many times over the years to play this Tune from a Jaco bass book and gave up after a while , I think its because it sounds so alien and the note are not usual choices.

Great stuff, Anthony. Now that we are quarantined up, I buckled down, and finally learned this. Using the transcription book by, Sean Malone, and this video, I was able to find some fingerings that suited me. It is still hard to follow you're speed, Bird's for that matter, but the muscle memory is there. Frustrating, but very rewarding to nail.

Great choices as far as strings used for certain notes. no open string for low A note on 5th bar? (Bb-7) Don't like to abuse open strings but this one seems to help with flow of notes

If you can Control open strings yeah sure. I prefer this way specially at faster speeds

I love your tutorials, and I only work in the last few days. Your videos are perfect for beginners, they help me to make melodious phrasing. But I have a small concern, I do not know if it is in a precise range that you made them? And even if it is the case, I can not determine it to reproduce it in all the other ranges? Thank you for understanding me and kindly answer me! Cordially!
@Spagsonbass6 жыл бұрын
Dude, your playing is outstanding and inspires me greatly!! Love your videos. I'm curious what rig you're running through to record.. Your tone is very unique to me. Very much a j-bass tone but it's got a very pillowy kind of attack.
@AnthonyMuthurajah6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Nick! It's just a DI out from my markbass amp into Logic Pro. No compression or anything, just reverb/delay depending on what I'm playing. I guess majority of the tone is coming from my lightened touch. I HATE digging in for no reason. In this context, the touch is extremely delicate but it tends to vary based on the style and sound I'm going for :)

there's a pretty good clip of Jaco playing it live. You can see a lot of his finger work. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5m6doyjic6LkM0 EDIT: I have also heard Jaco say he practiced the tune for 8 years before recording it.

Hey Anthony! Aren't you missing an import bit in jacos phrasing: Jaco is not really "swinging" the melody: For me it is closer to straight 8th notes (many times not always) than a triplet swing feel... I just figured that this is a big difference to the original.

I disagree with the position that the articulation should be separated from the swing. I see the the swing as part of the articulation and a defining characteristic of Jaco's version that it swings so hard in spite of the high tempo.

With respect, I just listened to Bird and Miles at half speed, I believe they play an A natural in both directions

Hey Great vid. In the beginning after you played the melody, were you playing Jaco's solo or just your own?? Also what advice can you give me about my soloing, or I should say rather my hearing. I play upright mostly but when I play electric I notice I always seem to play more BeBop style and I don't mind that but I would like to try a different sounding approach instead of always Bebop. I notice that those guys like Hadrien and Frederico play definitely jazz style but not Bebopish (not that they couldn't)... but it's more of a fluid movement rather than animated (don't know if I'm describing that right)
@AnthonyMuthurajah6 жыл бұрын
Besides half the opening line, everything else is my own solo :) Quoting Jacos classic opening line for one bar and that's it. Well I have plenty of lessons where I talk about many things pertaining to the fluidity you're talking about. The bebop stuff is great but after a while its redundant on the electric bass. I would suggest lightening your touch and just aiming for regular melodies and steer away from the bop cliches. Hope that answers your question and also be sure to check out my other soloing related lessons ;)
@KingPorter6 жыл бұрын
Anthony Muthurajah Thanks. Bebop stuff can definitely get be cliche . I check some of your earlier videos too..👍

The phrasing were off and the song was rushed, not to mention the mess ups. There's a reason why Jaco spent 12 years on this song. Watch Modern electric bass Jaco Pastorius. You will get the parts you messed up on and learn the techniques.
