I’m a side and back sleeper . Ive had massive lower back and sciatica pain plus upper back pain over the years. I’ve found I have trouble with my arms and shoulders in bed so to fix this I just bought a children’s soft snuggle toy to hug while I’m in bed. 😂❤ It’s worked a treat! It’s about the size of a basketball but a slightly flatter shape. I can also tuck it under my stomach as I lay on my side, or tuck it between my knees. I don’t like having too many different pillows in bed as every time I turn over I wake up due to having to move and rearrange everything! My squishy soft toy is ideal for any position that I need a little support with. Hope this helps someone else. ❤

I'm a side-sleeper. Specifically, my right side. Once I'm comfortable, I can stay there all night. I have a flat pillow, topped with an adjustable shredded foam pillow, under my head. Open space for my shoulder, another shredded foam (flatter) pillow under my ribs, and finally, a flat pillow between my legs. I fall asleep with my left (upper) leg nearly straight, and my right leg fairly bent- around 110* angle. I call my leg pillow my "knee pillow." I've been using it since 2001, when I had ACL replacement surgery. I couldn't tolerate my knees touching each other for several months post-op. It's comfortable, so I still use it. Plus, if I end up on my back, for whatever reason, my legs are supported, which keeps my back from hurting.

I was surprised the pillow between the knees wasn’t addressed in either video. For lumbar support while on my side I use a small flat pillow like those found on airlines. I love your videos, the banter between you and Mike is great, nice to see a relaxed but educational video series. I used to be a tummy sleeper until my back injuries, now I sleep on my side, with an expensive but amazing memory foam pillow and a memory foam pillow between my knees. I find it gets too hot to have any pillows in bed for support, even the knee one. But, I don't get headaches now, which I used to get all the time when sleeping on my tummy, not knowing about the causal factor. Now I'm recovering from a sciatica flare up and sleep on my side, don't move during the night at all, (somehow) and wake up feeling pain free. Thank you guys for the effort you put into your videos. We, your faithful viewers appreciate it. I'm from New Zealand.

While off-topic, I had undiagnosed sleep apnea until the 1990s. I come from a long line of "raise the roof" snorers. I knew something was wrong when I began falling asleep at my desk in middle age. A wise doctor sent me for a sleep test. It actually started me on an exercise/weight loss journey. After years of fitful sleep, six weeks of CPAP (yeah, it's hard to get used to, but hang in there), I fell like Jimmy Stewart at the end of "It's a Wonderful Life." Machines have advanced, as has the science from those days.

As an analogy it would be Like a using a piece of wood as a "chuck" to keep your car from moving down a hill. I don't like putting the "top" arm across my chest as you showed because it's uncomfortable for my shoulder while the extra pillow provides support. This sounds confusing as I read it back but I'm sure you'll get what I mean. Thanks.

Another side issue is hip alignment. On your side, unless you're fat, your upper knee sags to meet the lower. That pulls the greater trocantor, which in turn twists the hip girdle (pelvic syructure). I can only sleep on my side and started using body pillows 25-30 years ago to place my upper knee in alignment. I sleep on a waterbed, so many of the typical side sleeping issues are reduced, but the knee one is still there.

For me, I need a pretty wide pillow between my knees when side sleeping. This puts the lumbar spine in alignment instead of rotating from the weight of the knee. Recently, one knee has been so sensitive that it is also necessary to have that same foot supported with pillows. The weight of the foot actually pulls down on the ligaments in my right knee. With support, I maintain the same position through most of the night.

It also helps to put a pillow between the legs to take off pressure when you lie on your side. BTW, be sure you use lie and lay correctly. Sometimes you guys say "lay" when you should say "lie." Love your channel.

Left side sleeper. Have had 4 surgeries on right shoulder due to failed repair of broken shoulder followed by failed reverse shoulder replacement, followed by removal of that replacement with a spacer added, finally replaced by another reverse shoulder replacement which has been there 7 years now. The last two were by a different surgeon. Can’t sleep on right shoulder following all that. But I’m having headaches and wondering if they could caused by a wrong sleeping position on my left side.

Please advise on how to sleep with bone on bone knee arthritis. My knee pain often wakes me up at night and I have a hard time falling back asleep due to pain. I cannot take medication except on an occasional basis when the pain is especially bad. I also have knee tracking issues due to a tight ITB band. Thanks. I love your videos!

I sleep in my side and constantly turn b/c hips and shoulder hurt. What pillows should I be using? Thank you❤

I switch back and forth between my back and side; honestly very hard to find a pillow that suits both! Side sleeping hurts my shoulders, neck, and traps - and back sleeping seems to lead to a stinging piriformis 🤷🏻♀️

Is back sleeping a good position? I've been a life long side sleeper but have developed neck issues so I am trying to train myself to sleep on my back to help avoid neck pain, lower back and hip issues along with unwanted facial wrinkles. I use an adjustable bed that elevates the legs and head (on zero gravity) and use pillows at the side to support arms and haven't had neck, shoulder or back issues since.

Just curious, you guys didn’t talk about back sleeping? Is it good or bad to sleep on your back ?

The pillow under the stomach for belly sleepers worked for me starting about 3 months ago when stenosis started causing pain.

Ok, Beds as well make a huge difference in pain and how you sleep. I recently changed out beds for a new memory foam type bed that is so common these days. The lower back/Hip pain I was constantly feeling disappeared in about a week. Another trick regarding neck pain when side sleeping is to simply crush your pillow up to a higher resting position or if you really need a drastic change is just grab a lower corner of your pillow and fold it under so you have now doubled the thickness of your pillow. You can fine tune this with altering the amount of tuck you do. Small tuck = small change.

I did end up getting a memory foam pillow that has a slight dip in the middle. I wish I had it sooner. I had hip replacement last winter and I'm about to have the other one done. I still sleep with a pillow between my knee/ankle and I did use the idea to create a tunnel so my shoulder doesn't get sore. I still find it a bit uncomfortable to put a pillow under the ribcage. I feel like it pushes it up too far so I guess I need to find a thinner pillow or maybe just a folded towel. hmmm guess I will be trying that. :) Thanks for your videos!

Fav sleeping position definitely side lying. I love the "canal" idea for shoulder and low back pain. What about sidelying with pillow between your knees or supine with a wedge or roll under the knees?
