Pulp papers create the loveliest cauliflower blooms and back runs. Once we know the characteristics of any art supply-paint, paper, whatever…we can use them to their fullest advantage. Thanks again for magnificent tutorials, Paul. Happy New Year from me to you 🇺🇸 🇮🇪 🎆

You never cease to amaze and inspire. If ever I'm in a painting rut I simply watch any one of your videos and suddenly my groove is back (until the painting is finished and then a bit of sadness creeps in🤣) No Mucking about! Keep the videos coming my friend. Cheers Mate!

I'm so, so happy you're bringing out the positives with good quality cellulose paper here. I feel so bullied loving it for some of my works sometimes. I do not dislike cotton in the slightest, I just don't like using it for some subjects and projects.😢

I heard you mention Hahnemuhle a few times on your tutorials and I found the loose sheets at my local art store and I think it is my favourite brand ever. I have never been able to like Arches as they always cause hard edges on my paintings, except the 3 300lb sheet which is decent but I only use it occasionally . We have Cansen and Fabriano here in Canada too but I am not convinced by them. loose sheets are much cheaper than blocks. so I usually just get them.

I never worry about the paper buckling. After the painting is finished, you can spray the back with clean water, tape it down face up, and let it dry. As good as new!

The problem with the paper buckling is it creates little puddles of water and paint on your painting. This can lead to unintentional backruns and splotches of pigment where you don’t want it. I’ve never tried Bockingford or a heavy weight of pulp paper; I may have to give it another look for occasional practice❤ thank you, Paul!

I completely agree that cellulose paper can be better for some projects, or some painting styles. Actually, I use it more often than cotton paper, and I have 30 years experience in watercolours. I like that cellulose paper keeps colours brighter, it also reduces the amount of paint you spend. If one doesn't paint in many layers, only 1 or 2, good quality cellulose paper is fantastic. I love the paper you use, Bockingford, it's a bit expensive where I live, but totally worth it. Another great paper I like to use is Fabriano Studio 25% cotton. It's relatively cheap, and I like it's texture. The best unexpensive cotton paper if definitely Baohong.

Two great paintings, Paul!!! The second one looks better in the portrait shape - in my eyes. The most papers I use is 100% cotton, Hahnemühle, Arches, Fabriano, Centenaire from Gerstaecker, (it's a big art shop with some shops in Germany and own brands) But I also use pulp cellulose paper. I still try a lot of brands to find out what is the best for me. Thank you for sharing your works 🙂🌻❤️ Susanne

Thank you so much for the Where the Hell is Matt video link. I’d never seen it before and I’m still smiling. My favorite cotton paper is probably Hahnemühle The Collection as I like the texture better than Arches but I use Arches a lot too. Good economy cotton papers I use are Baohong Artist’s or Baohong Academy (student grade but still good), and Leyton which is 160 lb. I’ve tried Fabriano Studio which is 20% cotton but don’t care for it. I will give Bockingford a try if I can find it in the States. Happy New Year to you and Margot and thank you for all you’ve taught us!

A happy new year! And thanks for another lovely tutorial! Just what I needed. I've recently started actually using my expensive Arches papers 😆 and experienced some of the difficulties they present, if one is not used to them. But I've also come to appreciate the advantages. I'm looking forward to further exploring the potential of different papers. Hahnemühle offer a 'Watercolour selection', which is a bundle of 14 different sheets of paper from their range. It's lying on my stash, waiting to be tried. A lot to do in 2024 ... 😀

Paul, love the unbiased look see at the "watercolor paper" issue. Some teachers I have encountered would not even listen to me when I made the case for pulp or pulp/cotton mix papers. As always it seems to matter more what type of painting you are doing that will determines the materials best to be used. I like to at times paint with lots of special effects so pulp or pulp mix would probably work better for me. For my more formal (stuffy) works the 100% cotton will be a better match. Thank you for finally clarifying this issue for me with such wonderful examples.

I wish I could ‘blag it’ like you do, Paul. The ship painting is lovely, but my favourite is the landscape painting. It’s absolutely glowing and stunning. I love the abstracts, especially yours. I tried cotton paper for the first time just before Christmas and I wasn’t too keen. It’s a bit difficult to sketch on, and the marks on the paper looked like tiny bricks when painted over. Maybe a fault in production. I’ll stick to the pulp paper, especially as I’m still very much a learner. Thank you for another wonderful tutorial, and Happy New Year to you and Margot. 🎉😊

Absolutely stunning work! The comparison between pulp and cotton paper in these watercolor tutorials is enlightening. Both paintings are truly marvelous, and the results are beyond words.

Paul, thanks so much for making the different papers clearer for us. I pretty much stick to Arches 100% cotton but may try pulp. Beautiful paintings. Sherry

Thanks for this Paul. As a novice artist I have found that if I buy better quality paper I can get away with cheaper paint. Honestly it works. Paper is the key. Just a sheet of Arches cut into smaller pieces will give you the chance to try blending, watching bleeding techniques, lifting out colour and granulation will all happen with good paper. Thanks for the tutorials. Xx

Love the little happy dance! ❤🕺🏼😂 You are a joy to watch! Both paintings are amazing. You make it look so easy. I’ve found that I like Arches much more than Canson XL but I started with Canson. Sometimes I use very cheap paper to do mixed media. I put layers of gesso, modeling paste, acrylic too. So technically not using it for watercolor paper. Now I’m off to see what the video is that you mentioned at the end. Happy new year to you and Margot. Thank you for all the beautiful paintings and videos. Praying for a very successful 2024! 🙏🏻❤️

Both lovely, Paul! Especially that stunning sunset/ship! Gorgeous! Thanks you for paper recommendations. Love Arches, Fabriano, and also Fluid 100 and Stonehenge -both 100% cotton. Want to try the Saunders and Bockingford too. One favorite sketchbooks is by Tumuarta- 25% cotton and 140# and very nice! Cheers 😊

After years of using nothing but Arches, I'm finally trying out Fabriano Artistico. More out of necessity than choice. The art shop didn't have my usual 300gsm Arches in stock. As a substitute for Arches, I have to admit Fabriano is pretty good. I've noticed the paint doesn't "lift out" quite as readily. Looking at it in terms of budget, Fabriano is cheaper than Arches. (Though not by much.)
