2 "Well-behaved" Seals Rescued from Entanglement

Two strong and healthy and very "well behaved" seals were rescued on this day - one was caught in packing strap, the other one had a few strains of fishing line tightly wrapped around his chest. He showed visible relief when the last part of the entanglement was cut, he could finally breathe again! He sniffed around the net for a little while and then waddled back into the ocean. A successful morning for the rescuers from Ocean Conservation Namibia! 🦭

@@marigeobrien It’s the frequency of the voice that matters. Speaking in a low, soothing voice has the frequency many mammals and birds use to calm their own young. It also helps to get yourself back down. =)

At 2:51 team members run to work on an entangled seal in a net. The animal can't move, but still they run to it because they want to minimize the trauma for the seal.

I've noticed that lately more and more, the captured seals seem to struggle less and stick around more often after being released. I'm not suggesting that seals can communicate complex ideas to each other, but it seems that, over time, enough of them have witnessed the crew rescue and release enough of their buddies -- or themselves -- to lose the element of stress that's normally involved. Yes, they're still going to run when chased. That's evolutionary instinct. But the aftermath seems to have changed for the better, and it's fun to watch.

It would be very handy for OCN as they could just drive up to the patient instead of have to chase it everytime.. but it's best for the seals to stay wild and afraid of humans because of course not all humans are nice or understanding of the curiosity of seals
