This is Part 2 of the interview with Naude Dreyer from Ocean Conservation Namibia (OCN). In this part the founder of OCN told us what projects OCN does and what keeps them going on their journey.
OCN is a non-governmental organisation recently created in Walvis Bay, with the primary objective to put an end to the entanglement of marine wildlife along the Namibian coast. The team currently consists of three dedicated activists led by the Namibian conservationist Naude Dreyer, who started rescuing seals on his own more than five years ago at Pelican Point, Walvis Bay.
You can find out more about how you can help seals as well as watch amazing videos of seal rescues on the OCN website: www.ocnamibia.org/

Great video, education is the answer. The tip of eastern Australia has a problem with ghost nets. The area is remote but our first nations people are doing an amazing job collecting it and using it in art work which is sold and used in educating the public. Love your work 🐨 from Queensland Australia

And if you're at the beach anywhere, pick up any fishing line or rubbish you see on the beach and cut it up into small pieces before you dispose of it responsibly. Saves seabirds and turtles etc too. My Mum taught us all to do that from a young age. There’s nothing sadder than to see a little creature dead, caught up in rubbish that could’ve been so easily disposed of responsibly.

Who owns the oil rigs and fishing boats? Restaurants have inspections and get penalties if a bucket is in the wrong place, etc. Oil rigs and fishing boats should have inspectors, who make sure there are secure trash receptacles around the deck and following best practices for keeping debris out of the sea.

Hi Naude, I think the work you and your crew do is outstanding and vital. Thank you so much! Can I ask what you do with all the line, rope, netting that you manage to retrieve. How do you find is the best way to dispose or recycle it? Do you meet with fisheries and haulers to show them or help to educate them about the issues with their nets...and just one last question (😊) is there any progress that you know of for highly biodegradable nets that can breakdown quickly and be safe for marine life, maybe made of natural, inoffensive materials? Thank you so much again for all you do, this is such a worrying time for all wild and marine life, best regards, Carol

I have a question. If you could put out a recommended best practices for fishermen, etc. what would it be? Just alternatives or ideas, that would allow people to work on the oceans while still keeping the animals safe. If throwing out rubbish won't stop, for example, is there a type of fishing line that is less harmful? I also wonder why you aren't getting attacked when running into the middle of a large group and are completely surrounded?

You guys are great ! I especially like Tony and the way he talks to the seals, it makes me laugh. On a different subject what about those murderers that club those poor baby polar bears to death? I’d love to beat them to death. Is there anything we can do to stop them? Embarrassing those rich people who buy them doesn’t help. Also elephant tusks etc, etc, Linda Cafaro Keep up the good work,
