I have one of these thermostats and am working on a DIY project with a Mr. Heater and am only going to use 2 wires like you. As an electrical geek I know all circuits need 2 wires>> + & - or ac hot & a neutral but working with this thermostat I found it does not require any external power to operate. It all works off the batteries. I assumed the batteries simply backed up the programming, but, no, they power the electronics in the thermostat. I was amazed! !

Dude! You did an awesome job with this! Thank you so much! I was so worried when I opened the unit and it had all those connectors! Bless your heart for putting this video up!

Oh this made me so happy. I had an ancient mercury thermostat with 2 wires (neither had a color) and bought a thermostat I couldn't figure out. I returned it, got this one you installed and followed your directions and did it. Thanks so much! BTW the instructions say not to remove the jumper if you don't use both the R and RC and I didn't and it was fine. Thanks SO much for this great video!

Went to change my mothers and she had the mercury bulb. Hers was full of gunk and my Virgo nature was skeeved! Looked up 2 wire change of the same Honeywell as my model was a few year older, but looked exactly alike, and I did not remember those tiny screws inside. I was looking all over my mother's home for an eyeglass kit. So glad to have found this, you did well. Hope them elbows forgave you 😆

I appreciate your video. Concise. I came to find your video because I thought I was getting the instructions. Turns out Honeywell sent me a defective unit, mine doesn't have the black thing you connect the wires to.. you know "where the magic happens". So no magic for me. 😬. Also appreciate the 2 wire info, since so many people have 2 wire setups. Big fail on Honeywell for not putting that in the instructions as well.

Looks easier than I thought. We also have a furnace with no fan. Our house was built in '51. The nice thing which I'm sure you've noticed; if the power goes out in the winter for hours, we still have heat. I love that. The only problem I might run into is rather than a red wire and white wire, we may have two or three brown wires. That's what my girlfriend's husband found when he put up a new ceiling fan. In fact, we also don't have a circuit breaker, we have a fuse box. But it's the brown wires I'm concerned about.
@TheAmateursAmateur4 жыл бұрын

I WROTE THIS COMMENT ON JOHN P'S 2-WIRE PAGE: "I installed this on a millivolt heater-only system according to another KZbinr (THE AMATEUR'S AMATEUR), removing the R-Rc jumper as he suggested. The heater went on and stayed on. I remembered that the instruction manual said nothing about removing the jumper (unless an Rc wire came out of the wall). I hunted around on the floor and found and replaced the jumper and the heater now is controlled properly.

@tcalofКүн бұрын
For those wiring a 2 wire millivolt appliance, like a gas fireplace or gas heat stove, (not a gas oven LOL), the 2 wires' only function is to open or close the circuit which opens or closes the gas valve. It should not matter which of the 2 wires goes to the W or R terminals. Ignore the color of your 2 wires. The reason colour doesn't matter is because you have no idea to which of the thermopile's terminals they are connected to. The thermopile is the part that generates the millivoltage to keep the pilot light going and to open and close the gas valve. The thermostat only acts like a simple light switch. No need to fuss over which wire is hot (meaning which wire supplies the voltage and current to activate the thermostat). Also if using only 2 wires, follow the directions to not remove the jumper between R and RC . You only remove the jumper if you have an extra wire running to the old thermostat's RC terminal.
