I couldn't say it better. I still play EQ because you have to play with others. If I do something well, I get known by other players for it. If I'm a champion, it's to other players, not some NPC. All other MMOs get it wrong.

Commenting for reach for now due to the incredible praise this deserves. Your videos are the first that have ever really foucused on what makes an MMO an MMO. Some videos just take you back to a different time. This was one of those videos man. Awesome job! Never even played EQ, but I remember going over to a friends house around 2000. They were playing EQ and Jedi Knight. I remember them telling me how good bard was and i remember thinking "man that game must suck if BARD is the best class" lmao. They were very very poor. Plywood for walls and floors in their rooms, no joke! But somehow, they had enough for the monthly subscription which boggled my mind. That subscription was a killer for most kids like me back then. My parents weren't having that! Anyways, this is some ACTUAL content. Glad i found your channel.

Enjoying Everquest is like enjoying an old car. It doesn't have all the conveniences and creature comforts of modern cars, but it has a visceral experience that only that time period could provide. It's clunky, it's inconvenient, but sure does it feel great when you accomplish something with it.

Monk is the best class because you can intentionally train mobs on people by using feign death. Then when the GM comes to talk to you, you just keep pretending to be dead to avoid ban.

I really enjoyed Everquest back in the day. I didn't get too far, like about lvl 30, until Final Fantasy XI online and i got about 30,000 hours now and still going. Many points in this video works also in FF11. Both are pre-WOW MMO and both do an amazing job in needing to party and interact with other plays and oh yea it's so good.

I remember the fist time I took the boat from FP to Butcherblock. I was level 6 or 7 I think and lagged during the boat zoning and spawned in the middle of the ocean, no boat in sight. I was killed by some fish mob (maybe a shark I can't remember) and respawned back in FP with no idea where my corpse and my gear were. The panic at the thought of losing my crappy gear and handful of gold nearly sent me into tears. Thankfully someone suggested I /petition a guide and that guide summoned my corpse because the boat zoning bug was known by that time. I was so grateful I became a guide myself eventually. I was guide Ailron in Xegony and a couple other servers in case anyone remembers. Fennin Ro was my character home server though. Hail Army of Fate and Eternal Crusaders of Norrath guilds (1999-2003). Edit: Does anyone remember the Sister Island quest with the kola nuts? I gained like four levels in a single day before Verant/SONY got wise and nerfed it to heck. Still one of my fondest memories of my early EQ days.

If you played AD&D with your friends in the 80s like I did, and you had a DM that played by the rules and didn't give away everything, with rich story telling and a bit of mystery with secrets kept until discovered and kept well then you'll like EQ! In the original eq had a sense of mystery to it. Before the nerf and level limits you could get powerful weapons and items at lower levs that were very rare in game because they were kept secret or on the hush hush. You could gather bits and pieces of info on how to obtain these items through conversations you over hear or have with others. Players were good at keeping secrets and so was EQ. Eq did not tolerate cheating and 1 person playing more than one account at a time back in those days was considered cheating. Expensive way to cheat at that. EQ did not tolerate that crap and neither did most the players!

plenty of mmos still force social interaction, DOFUS, ESO, WoW Retail (yes you are forced to work with others to progress properly in Mythic+, even normal+ raids need coordination), etc. Anyone who says modern WoW doesn't encourage group play hasn't played modern WoW. For ESO it's the fact all things like crafting/trading are so manual & no central AH. Endgame in almost all MMOs forces interaction they just kill the boring grind and repetition things like the "need to bind" somewhere, that isn't good gameplay forcing social interaction. you can still have cool stuff like warlocks summoning players to a dungeon but that's just a "nice to have" not "need to have"

"How you play really matters to other people, REAL people" oh BRO. Playing an Enchanter all the way to 60 and on some raids? I felt that. Yeah there are some meddling assholes who give you a hard time (i only played an ENC that 1 time through to 60, it was a real learning curve - i DID suck early on but i got really good in the end) but boy, there were some groups I got in where we MELTED mobs for 8 hours straight. Where if I, the Enchanter, made a mistake? Yeah the whole group was done. Are Encs a bit OP? Probably. But the feeling of being a really *competent* Enchanter in a group of people that value your presence is just gold. No other game does it right.

The idea of killing yourself to save time pre level 6 seems a little odd. I can't imagine you save that much time, depending on the level. Assuming you leave "noob" area by level 4, you'd have about 120 hit points +/-. At 2 hit points per tick (6 seconds) and assuming most of the time you heal up from at no lower than 40% health to make sure you don't get adds you can't handle, which would be a waste of time since you'd have to run to a guard to scrape them off, then 3.5 minutes is the heal time to full. But you wouldn't heal to full because you don't need full health in the noob zone. So realistically, you only need 2 to 2.5 minutes. If you play a healing class, then you can likely cut recovery time as some mana can be used to heal. Now, if you are dying on purpose at 40%, that may technically work. or pressing yourself lower since you plan on dying anyway. You'd still have wasted time running to pick up your stuff and relearning spells. So I will concede that, overall, some time might be saved. But I would think that resting up would also give you time to actually pay attention to chat and set up UI elements and other things outside of EQ. Especially for those that have a lot to learn about the game. Interesting point to discuss. I'm more interested in the idea of whether it's better to group at low level and not have any down time. Sheer lack of money makes it feel pointless as no one gets the money they need and levels come fast enough players are always needing to run and buy more stuff or sell stuff.
@TheOldOak-2023ad2 ай бұрын
Eq spoiled me when it came to online MMO computer games. I played it for over 20 years. In my mind, other MMOs are child's play and easy compared to EQ. Easy is boring and doesn't interest me for long. I zipped through other MMOs I played quest lines like a breeze and end game and boss mobs without much effort which made them boring compared to EQ.
