This movie is groundbreaking for film and impressive for sure. This scene, like many in films at the time and in other Walt Disney films (Peter Pan, for example) makes it clear how little Disney and the entire movie crew knew about or understood the world they were filming. Real cannibals are not dark-skinned islanders intent on killing and eating anyone new, white, or otherwise different any time they see them. Cannibalism has been a feature of many cultures across the globe, cultures not including "cults" or individuals like Hannibal Lector (or the real-life counterparts: psychopaths and sociopaths). I mean people that have existed in groups much older in their region than, say, Americans in the USA. These people live in tribes or similar group structures with rules, religions, ideas, and family structures as complex and important as any other culture in the world. Cannibalism itself is not very exciting or complex; some cultures have spiritual or legal beliefs that place importance on the physical material of a human body, and together with other variable factors they find it necessary to eat parts of the human body after death in order to do a number of practical and spiritual things ritualistically, such as sending a loved one into a death state or afterlife, or gaining strength from them in a social sense. People that have cultural cannibalistic practice do not want to eat anybody and everybody; they eat food and drink like anybody because they are people in need of sustenance they could not get from a human body. Additionally, killing is not always, and not often, the preparation necessary for cannibalistic ritual; this is a ritual that often takes place after someone dies of some other cause than murder. Also, in times when people do kill others it is not for fun, out of anger, or generally aggressive; it is a repulsive event to kill someone to most peoples and, for example, there is a large tribe in Papua New Guinea (the location featured in this scene) that may still practice cannibalism today. They believe that sometimes a demon-like evil spirit (spirits being part of their religion) will enter a loved one or relative and they bring harm to their people. In order to stop this from happening, they kill the person (who they believe is now only evil) and eat parts of them to get rid of the evil spirit and save their tribe. My point is that real cannibalism is a far cry from the cannibalism featured in this scene. The only reason films exist including cannibalism is because someone in 1940 made a movie featuring "cannibals" for the first time and it was taken up by the movie creators who did a lot of copying at the time. This coincided well with the Jules Verne novel which features the cannibals shown in the film in a similar way, also a demonstration of the racism and ignorance that was normal at the time. I must add, the movie does not actually employ any Papua New Guinean people and therefore has given no contribution to them in any way while gaining from their use as characters, making them a cultural slave to the movie company. This happened and still happens often in media across the globe, especially coming from the USA.
