Citizen Sleeper simply cannot be praised enough. I've never played a game that explores themes as personal and intimate with such well-written and genuinely emotionally gripping dialogue. Playing it felt like reading my favorite childhood book, unpacking years of feeling like I don't belong and playing dungeons and dragons style roleplaying all at once. Easily my game of the year, do yourself a favor and play it today.

The "obscure games" lineups from game channels are my favorite videos of the year. These games are always new, innovative, short, on point, devoid of seasonal grind and feature checklisting, and as a bonus - affordable but directly support small, passionate developers, instead of huge corporate structures. These are games made for gamers, by gamers - and the more exposure they get, the better! Thank you!

To be fair, I played it for a while and then dropped it. The majority of your time is not spent on puzzles, which I was hoping for, but on combat and backtracking. And both the combat and enemies are just not that good. Many of the hidden paths are just things hidden behind the isometric perspective, meaning hitting every nook and cranny is viable but boring. I don't think I really hit the 'discovery' part of the game, even though I had completed a couple of bosses and went through several areas. But at that point, I was just bored with it.

My favorite overlooked gem from 2022 is I Was A Teenage Exocolonist. It's a life sim merging systemic gameplay with a compelling narrative about growing up in humankind's first extrasolar colony. The devs had been best known for the Rebuild series of zombie city builders, but this game demonstrates they've mastered the whole spectrum of disciplines comprising game development. The game is beautiful with innovative design and memorable characters, so I can't recommend it enough.

Cool to see Symphony of War on the list! A fun side note about it: it's specifically mashing up Fire Emblem with another strategy RPG, Ogre Battle. That's where the idea of each unit being a group that auto-battles for two exchanges comes from--the main difference being that Ogre Battle's tactical mode plays out in real-time rather than turn-based on a grid. It's a cool series!

Neon white is 100% my game of the year. I literally followed the game from its very first trailer and couldn't have been happier with how it turned out. The two tips I would give for a new player playing are 1) Try and have fun with the story. It gives off this cringe anime 2000s vibe that I think is really important for how the game feels, and the pauses are a nice break before diving back into the levels. If it is too cringe for you though, it's really easy to just skip and ignore it all. 2) If you shoot enemy bullets, you get a speed boost. As soon as I learned of this hidden mechanic my brain immediately expanded ten fold and unlocked some cool new ideas.

Patrick's Parabox and Squishcraft came out this year! they both take sokoban puzzlers and change the very idea of how they are supposed to work in awesome ways. Parabox forces you to think about the stage you are in as a whole, and how you can exploit the boundaries of it it complete a stage. Recursion and the effects of it are common, and go so far as to use infinities as a game mechanic. The boundaries get so loose by the end you are using recursive stages to exploit eachother to move blocks around. Squishcraft despite looking like a game made by a 3 year old on a caffeine bender uses the idea of combining and splitting stage elements themselves to get around more ridged objects in the stage. I think theres texture packs if you hate the default look.

Disembodied voice man, I have a recommendation for you; Prognostic. It's a horror game in which you use supernatural tools to solve murders. It has a story and a finite amount of missions so it's not like Phasmophobia where it's just randomly generated sets of missions. The tools at your disposal include tarot cards, rocks in a cup, wheel map and a few others and by using all of them you can narrow down the culprit of the murder in that mission. Of course you won't be quite alone while doing this...

I've only played one of the games on this list: Potionomics. It was actually your video on game economies that brought it to my attention! Citizen Sleeper is definitely going on my wishlist; it looks super cool!

Right at the cusp of a dying year giving way to a new one, I feel so well curated for, I feel warm and fuzzy inside.

It's so nice of the Citizen Sleeper devs to include a whole free game with their Guillaume Singelin artbook. Jokes aside, to me Singelin is one of the best artists in comics today, and having a full game illustrated by him is the best thing.

The Looker got me laughing madly at multiple moments. My favourite (past the ending) was that damned statue. Utterly fantastic

This year was truly great for new games. I'm really glad that Teardown and Neon White made it on your list. Some of the other games that made it on my list was Anglerfish(a horror time loop), APICO(a sim about being an apiarist), Case Cracker(a text-based detective game), Hyper Demon(a fever dream FPS), Moonscars(a medrodvania souls-like), and The Wandering Village(a traveling city builder). You should check these out when you get a chance Adam, and thanks again for another great end of the year video :)

I love that teardown was among your favorites. My favorite part about it is definitely the setup for each level and trying to beat every level as incorrectly as possible (read flying machines). They patched out my first buggy flying machine, but I've got more.
