I'm so glad you metnioned Assassins Creed's Multiplayer mode - I thought I was the only person that liked it. I was so bummed when they stopped including it in their games. The feeling of trying to find someone that was hunting you, all while hiding in groups of NPCs hasn't been replicated since then. It was such an underated multiplayer experience.

For its time, it really added revolutionary ideas from where most stealth games drew inspiration from. To using holy water to not only hurt undead but also put out light sources in order to make more shadows, was pretty cool. Even Chaos Theory took a lot of those same elements from Thief.

It frustrates me how much of Thief hasn’t been used as lessons for other games. The guard’s volume alone goes a long way towards letting you use your senses to feel like you’re actually being stealthy.

I remember getting the platinum for Dishonored. I just loved playing the game with high chaos, and then playing the whole game without killing anyone,except the primary targets. And even most of them can be dealt with by indirect means. Absolute smashing game... 👍👍

Definitely! Dishonored is probably my top 1 stealth game of all time, the amount of creativity you can put into that game is mind-boggling. The story is captivating, the tools you have are designed without flaw and the eerie atmosphere of Dunwall is just chilling. I always find myself coming back to that game when I am burnt out on other games and it never fails to brighten my day. On another note, Dishonored 1 is probably one of the better optimized games for PC that I've ever come across. Arkane did a hell of a job with that game!

My favourite runs in Dishonoured are actually the non-lethal, never seen (ghost) runs - it does become somewhat of a stealthy walking simulator and is very difficult but the visuals and the lore immersion make it that much more worth it

Mad respect for featuring Invisible Inc. The feeling of corporate espionage and the amazing turn-based gameplay that turn-by-turn increased the tension in tandem with soundtrack really provided a tense, rewarding experience, full of flavor and with lots of replayability due to the deep mechanics and different characters. In my mind of best games out there of all time that aren't widely known.

Agreed. Invisible Inc. was really the first turn-by-turn based gameplay I had played before and gave it a chance since it was VERY stealth based. They did a great job of the mechanics and the layers of increasing challenges and upgraded tools and skills to combat them, the subtle bonuses for perfect stealth approaches and all. Really hoping they get their continuation to this game.

Splinter Cell Choas Theory was the first stealth game I played. It took me a while to get used to it, but I loved it. The final levels really pushed you to do your best to create darkness and save your equipment.

Fun fact: Fromsoft developed Tenchu before Dark Souls made them famous. Sekiro actually began development as a Tenchu reboot but eventually took on a life of its own as more and more new ideas were introduced.

It’s sad that stealth games are so few and far between these days. My favorite genre, really. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory is my all time favorite. Rarely could a game achieve to grab my attention until I managed to finish all levels with a zero in all categories (zero kills, knockouts, zero spottings, zero shots fired) as well as being played on the hardest difficulty. The coop mode was the cherry on the cake and back then I even met the genius competitive player ::Noire:: online and tried to keep up with that legend (speed running plus no kills etc.) I will never forget about this experience. Especially the story was superb. Sam Fisher was a legend back then before it went Double and convictive only to end on a black list.

Thank you for mentioning Tenchu. I absolutely loved tossing poisoned rice chunks to overweight guards to eat right off the ground. Those were the good ol days. The stealth mechanic was such a new thing in those days that it made the game quite unique.

I absolutely love the Styx games. They both have their flaws, but I feel like they really improved the "Don't touch or disturb anyone" aspect of the second game. In the first one it was often impossible or at least REALLY hard to get all the medals without killing anyone, but in the second I feel like they doubled down on the stealth aspect in a way of "The less you disturb them, the less they will be a problem for you"

I'm pretty surprised to see the shadow of war games not pop up. I thought it had great stealth mechanics. The enemy army system really enhanced it for me from poisoning a grog barrel to sabotage a feast, or outright taking them under your command to make them do your bidding. Dishonored 2 in my opinion is the best stealth game ever (even though I admit I haven't played most of the old gen stealth games). It's complex but at the same time so fun to play, you have magic powers that are cool, and give you a lot of creative opportunities. You can throw bottles, glasses, vases to make noise and distract guards or attract them. You can stop time! In addition to that the story changes based on how you behave in the game and what choises you make. And the mission, they are never boring, they aleays have some elements that make them unique and original. I don't wanna spoil anything but... The Aramis Stilton mission is simply awesome, and who played the game knows why for sure.

I still remember doing that quest where you sabotage an Executioner's gears. In my case I delayed the quest for far too long that I just realize I only got 9-12 hour left to finish it, and at that time it's pitch dark in the middle of the night. I don't even have any food left AND I got a bounty on me at Rattay, it's really *Now or Never* . I can't use Rattay to take the shortcut into the camp, so I roam the forests around Rattay. I got inside the camp, can't see shit, do the job, and leave. The thing is, it's almost dawn and the quest will fail when the sun rises, got no choice other than making my way back to the Executioner's house right through Rattay. With my stomach grumbling at every second, I made it to the exit gates (I don't even remember how I slipped through the guard at the gates) I made it to the house on time and then enjoy the humiliation of an executioner from my hardwork. Fun times.

I would absolutely love to see the same list, but for the Strategy based games, I believe that a lot of amazing strategy games are under the radar, come and go quietly and undeservedly so. There are these big hype strategy based games like Civilization and AOE for example, but man there is more out there! Thief's cyberpunk cousin System Shock 2 has a stealth element that I've always really enjoyed. Because they both share the Dark engine, the player in both games has this weighty quality to it that you never see anymore. You can bump into objects in the world and if you knock something heavy over, the sound it makes will draw enemies.

It's overlooked because the stealth mechanics were kind of hidden. Everything from the early Thief games was there but they didn't really push it. If, like me, you played it around the same time you could easily fall into the habits and ghost much of the game. All the mechanics were built into the engine and AI.

Since you put it as a honorable mention, I’ll just say that I feel that Ghost of Tsushima deserves a place more so than some others. Due mainly to the fact that you can choose to play as the “Ghost” and complete most everything silently (which can be pretty hard) and also the dedicated stealth portions, which are great (also you fail if you’re caught). The producers of Sly Cooper made this game sooo yeah, they know how to do stealth atleast well enough to get Sly on here (one of my childhood games).

far cry 6 is a pretty good stealth game. the first time i played it i just went in guns blazing and had very boring fights where loads of guys came at me and i just mowed them down. but during my 2nd play through i heavily leaned into the stealth aspect, killing enemies from the shadows with high powered scopes and silencers and it was much more fun and challenging.

@@bane9951 No, but moving around a map without being spotted or sounding the alarm, especially on the harder difficulties is about as much stealth focused as a game like hitman 3. and clearing out a bunker or a building isnt possible from afar with a sniper, most of the time you need to crouch around with a silenced pistol and make sure that an enemy is alone before you make a move or hope that you can take down all enemies before they can fire back or raise the alarm or your gun over heats and the silencer fails.

No! Stealth is at its best when you are heavily punished for failing to use stealth, to the point where you will die almost instantly. Payday 2 has underrated stealth. It's very unique and statisfying. Sprint, jump, crouch, sprint, jump, crouch.

It was cool, but too scripted. Not the mechanics fault, more like linear nature if the levels. What would be cool to see is the structure of levels like in Sniper Elite 4-5, where you don't have like open world, but more like open massive levels. It allows more dynamic geography, more compact, but way interesting levels and overall more interesting I think.

Stealth against infected in part 1 and 2 feels scripted and easy for me. I think the stalkers are the only one that's slightly harder. Playing the game on survivor, there are infected literally standing in the corner and looking down at a wall. While the only ones that move are clickers who are blind. There are also other moments where the levels feel like it is giving you a way out and a way to avoid the zombies easily. The human enemies are good tho. Sad you can't carry bodies, light doesn't effect an enemy's view, hiding on grass no matter the time of day will 100% keep you safe unless there are dogs or an enemy is touching you, you can't really play around with your enemies any other way than distracting them with bottles, and the tools at your disposal for stealth is pretty darn basic (silenced pistol, silenced submachine gun in the end, a bow, a knife, proximity mine, smoke bombs, molotovs and I think that's pretty much it). Just like part 1, I don't feel like TLOU's stealth insentivizes you to not get caught. It always feels like an action hide and seek game where you get caught and you can hide back to stealth so easily and it creates this flow of combat. I don't think the steath is bad, I just think it's okay. A few steps above any Assassin's Creed's stealth I think. I would probably put it in my top 20 but I don't think it's reaching top10

I would love to see Tenchu series rebooted, but it would need a big upgrade in gameplay mechanics. The last Tenchu game was released in 2006 and gameplay in these 15 years evolved to be more accessible. I loved Tenchu, but I loved the second game better. It is funny that so many years have passed and yet I still remember this sentence. Echigoya, where have you hidden? BTW: we should not forget the soundtrack of Tenchu, it was really good.

I know there's a ton of them, and the mechanics are usually almost the same. But I love the Assassin's Creed series so much. The base gameplay was so addicting and the worlds were so great. The stories varied in quality, but when they were good it was really good. Some changed small details and it really spiced it up each time. Some were like Black Flag and introduced huge changes that were amazing and fit into the flavor of that game. I haven't played the modern Ass. Cred. formula, mostly because I'm still trying to catch up and finish some of the older ones (seriously, they can stand to slow down a bit). I know Ubisoft gets a lot of crap, but in my experience with Assassin's Creed and R6 Siege, I'm rarely disappointed. Not saying I have any loyalty to them, but I appreciate the good ones that do come out. Btw old assassin's creed multplayer is severely underrated.

Props for mentioning Syphon Filter(it, Metal Gear, FF 7 & 9 were my PS faves), Styx and Aragami. I'd mention Sniper Ghost Warrior and Alpha Protocol for true stealth games. As far as games that you can do a lot of stealth in I'd mention Far Cry, Horizon, Sekiro, Homefront the Revolution, Crysis, Wolfenstein(2009 and Old Blood especially), Skyrim, Manhunt, The Saboteur, Tomb Raider, We Happy Few and Metro series. I love stealth and if a game has the option for it, it's how I'm going to play it as much as I can. I'm hoping we get a new Deus Ex, Splinter Cell and Thief games sometime in the future.

Aaaah Tenchu, tenchu, tenchu... you really need to make a comeback. I'm with you Jake, I loved Wrath Of Heaven... Played the fuck out of it. Also, I'm 150 years old, so loved Siphon Filter first... I think it was my first stealth game maybe. MGS2 was my jam in that series, although 4 doesn't get the love it deserves. I like and enjoy the sneaking in Ghost of Tsushima, but... It's base stealth. It's just hiding in reeds then popping out to slit a throat. It's not challenging stealth. The master of using stealth properly would be Splinter Cell. It's use of light/dark and sound, are unparalleled to this day, in my opinion.

Thief 2 was my first experience with a true "stealth" game. Bought it back in 2000 I think. I had no idea what it was at the time, just saw it on a shelf in the computer game section of some store. Got it back home and downloaded a huge patch for the game. Took me like 4 hours on a 56k modem. Anyways, I absolutely fell in love it. Great story and atmosphere with some cool cutscene animations between each mission. A fair amount of humor delivered by the game's NPC's and the stealth game-play was something I had never experienced before. One of my favorite games. I've played Hitman and Deus Ex:Human Revolution and while I admit they are fun, they just don't measure up for me. Thief 2 is THE stealth game.
