@@AndyM-s8p A 20 year old ICE car is still good for another 5 years. No EV will last more than 10 years. That's the point you've clearly missed. There is no second hand EV market.
@AndyM-s8p6 ай бұрын
@@andrewwaller5913 Of course EVs run for more than 10 years. There are 61 Nissan Leaf for sale on Autotrader registered from 2011 to 2014 and 15 Tesla from 2012-2014. It’s just BS that they don’t last more than 10 years. A high proportion of ICE cars are scrapped before they’re 20 years old. And don’t bother responding with ‘my mate’s EV was scrapped after 5years’, because my mate’s BMW engine blew up within 10 years and the car was scrapped, but that doesn’t extrapolate to all BMW engines are scrap within 10 years. Just like 1 bad EV experience doesn’t mean they’re all crap. There seems to be a thriving second hand market for EVs (nearly 23000 available on Autotrader), and it’ll only improve as more are available and they get older, and cheaper.

The best cars I've found for under £2k are the first gen Peugeot 308 SW wagons! I've had 2 now... The first was a 2008 2.0 HDi manual that was written off, which I then replaced with a 2011 2.0 HDi auto. 7 seats but with all 5 removable rear seats out and the front passenger seat folded flat, there's nothing I haven't been able to fit in it! I have a 2m basket for the roof as they have the rack bars as standard too. Both gladly achieve well over 50mpg mixed driving, both bloody bulletproof mechanically, and they never rust. They are more practical than my old Berlingo and the rear suspension tends not to collapse, although I did prefer the higher van-like driving position. I absolutely can't fault them hence why I replaced the first one with the same!

I've recently been on the hunt for a car (preferably Jag) with a £4k budget. There were many S-types and X-types for little over £2k that could be negotiated to the budget. There is a good X-type estate in Essex for £2 with manual and 3.0 V6. I wanted to go a bit older, so I got an X300 with 82k for £3k very locally. The extra was worth it for the local convenience and more preferred older car (and lower tax class).

I drive a V6 Rover 75 Tourer. They are rare with petrol engines on the estate model & the 2.0 engine is unusual with most being the 2.5. As for your choices I’d actually go with Geoff’s X-Type Jaguar here, that was a nice looking example although I’d prefer an estate if looking for myself. The MGF’s are very affordable classics & small enough that they squeeze on many a cramped driveway.

I've had nine years from my last £3K car purchase, and it's still going strong. However, I have a new travel requirement -- soon I'll be doing an additional 8000 miles a year in loads of repeated 10 mile journeys. Loads of short journeys are an absolute torture for a Diesel, OK in a Petrol, but the ideal duty for an EV. Right? Let's look at the costs. Roughly £1500 a year just in petrol for that one repeated journey. If I bought a cheap electric car just for local trips, about £300 a year in electricity, charged overnight at home. That assumes the battery is good for four ten mile trips a day without a recharge in between (which is not the same thing as a single forty mile journey). If not, and it needs a top up on day electricity rates, make that £650. From next year tax stops being free, and factor in an insurance policy for it too (over £500 per year as an additional car, although that may reduce over time as NCD builds up on the new policy). Once I filter out cars where you don't own the battery (what?), where the battery is already half dead, and ones which are actually a quadricycle and not a real car, it suddenly looks like a ~£5K purchase. The TCO is less for buying the petrol rather than the EV. To get an electric car that would do ALL the work the current car is expected to handle (so it can be completely replaced) saving it's tax and allowing the insurance NCD to transfer is more like £12K-£15K purchase. And sure enough the economics don't work there either. Would I like an electric car? Sure. But the economics are in favour of keeping the car I have and just feeding it more fuel.

Berlingo beats the Wind, for me. Doblo vs Alfa 159 2.4 diesel? I'd take either, or both. I'd take the Jag Diesel. As I've already had a Rover 75 Estate, and it was disappointingly unreliable with annoying things like fuel leaks. MX-5. I'd take the 320D over the 745i to keep fuel and insurance and maintenance costs down. Both are nice cars. For under £2000 I'd go for a Swedish car. A Volvo S60 or V70 with a manual box and the 163HP D5 non-DPF engine. Reliable, safe, comfortable, OK to drive, long lasting, reasonable MPG.

Fiat Doblo - had one brand new (motability [wheelchair ramp etc]) drove about 10 miles before tapping the rear lights of a vehicle in front [trying to change lanes in almost stationary traffic] - result one small scratch to other vehicle's rear left indicator light cover and the whole right hand side front panel [from bumper over wheel arch] looking like butter cut with one of those crinkle cutters or a crinkle cut chip bent and squeezed. Several weeks later became the first vehicle I owned to have the drivers door forced with a screwdriver for scum to nick the Sony radio/cd unit - probably stole the £60 Sony because they knew the Doblo wasn't worth taking.
