My advice for the French. The light squared bishop isn't just bad because it's passive, it's also bad because attempts to trade it off are usually even worse than letting it be bad. Trading it off on a6 pulled the knight away from instead piling on d4. I'm not a titled player so I might not know the French at this level, but I'm a huge nerd for French theory. Your video on playing the French Exchange with Bd6, Ne7, etc. queenside castle has won me nearly every game I've had with it, including a win against a titled player. I've adopted it as my pet opening and have found a ton of killer attacking lines in it.

There are some lines where whites lightsquared bishop is the main attacker. If you can trade that off you can kinhside castle and win on the queenside before white kingsides attack connects.

I'm 55 and have only played neighbours at chess over a drink or two (around 30 games), I've just started to play again (begin). I stumbled across Anna Cramling and started watching many others. I watch Pia evaluate Anna's games and it's like trying to watch a pair of socks in a washing machine. Then I saw Eric and WOW, what a lovely calm demeanour and clear soft voice, he is just so down to earth and unrushed, the kind of person you need in an emergency. What confuses me though is how Eric seems to slow down time, he sips his tea, plans his moves and forewarns us about tricks and pitfalls and still seems to have 5 mins left. Meanwhile in my universe: I've castled and I'm frantically scanning for the forthcoming zombie attack and there are open routes everywhere. Then it's my move and the board shrinks and I'm under house arrest and the clock is ticking faster and faster and faster, and I'm hoping I am not being streamed in some "How to beat an Idiot" video NOW though I've learned to calm down a little more and I can see the value of squares as well as pieces, it's a bit like Scrabble and having a triple letter square. In just over a few weeks I don't just see pieces (32), I see bus routes, journey times and rest stops, It's amazing. Thanks, Eric, you are wonderfully kind for sharing your talent and personality with us in such an entertaining way. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Thought this was interesting: At 36:29 in the Bird game, Eric correctly predicted Rf1 check, but his rook on A3 was hanging. If black takes the rook (which Stockfish says is the best move), Eric would have Ne4 discovered check. From that point, any of the 3 king moves leads to a royal fork, and blocking with either knight leads to a (messy) forced mate. Watching the video, I saw the hanging rook but not the crushing follow-up.

I'm still shocked at how many people castle into the Stafford. You don't need to learn any theory, just don't castle and you'll be much safer than if you castled kingside. Then just don't leave your queen undefended on d1 and you'll be golden. Even Qf3 is very playable.

@Sploooshen10 ай бұрын
41:37 He goes over it and it’s not a forced mate. I personally don’t see it as unfair because after he read the comment it was like 10 moves past and he said it “looked close to mate.” I generally trust eric to know the position more than chat.
@3TQHAJSHNQ10 ай бұрын
@@Sploooshen Maybe not in this specific scenario, but you do see how having 100 (or how ever many) viewers giving commentary on a chess game that is CURRENTLY being played is unfair right?
@3TQHAJSHNQ10 ай бұрын
@@Sploooshen also what do you mean "better than chat". Why couldn't people just have the game in an engine live?
@Sploooshen10 ай бұрын
@@3TQHAJSHNQ If Eric wanted to cheat he would just use the engine. Anyone in chat is free to ask a question. If someone in chat kept giving the top engine move sprinkled in his games. They would be muted or banned. And that’s if eric actually uses that chatters move. Normally he makes a move then looks at chat. Every top chess streamer does that. It does at first seem like an advantage, but it just isn’t. It’s more distracting than anything.
