I'm so glad you show when things fail, and you just try again. It shows people that this happens to everyone at some point, that it's par for the course, and to not give up. This is a great transition video - really shows the differences between early spring and late summer planting, and how the plants benefit from cooler temps as they grow. Thanks Gary!

With bunching onions (or scallions or green onions as they are called in grocery stores), rather than "pull them up" to harvest, if you simply cut off the top part down to about a half inch above the ground - leaving the roots in the ground (which you probably won't eat anyway), they will grow back. So you only need to plant them one time! You'll certainly never need to buy them again at the grocery store if you do this. By the same token, if you buy them from the grocery store, if you plant just the root of the onions after you have cut off and eaten the top parts, the roots will grow fresh onions.

I just sowed seeds for spinach, swiss chard, Bok Choy, Winter Choy, beets, red mustard, mizuna, Komatsuna, tatsoi, and kale. I have endive, and lettuce sprouting in seed starting trays, and will be transplanting in a few weeks. In a week, I will be doing a final harvest of bush beans in a week, freeing up two 31.5" x 63" raised beds. I'll be sowing more turnips, beets, radishes, chives, and Kohlrabi, then reassessing to see what I have room for. I'm looking forward to the cooler weather in fall. Today, I harvested a bunch of beans (Cantare, Golden Butterwax, Dragon Tongue, Tongues of Fire, and Blue Lake pole beans), Cubanelle Peppers, and Banana Peppers, and processed them for this winter. All of my raised beds have hoops for greenhouse plastic, more for deer protection than frost. Central Alabama 7B

It is nice to see some of the raised beds that were not made of 2x. I had to replace some wood on my raised beds this year and went with a thinner board. I went with 1” pressure treated vs 2” non-treated. Costs was less than half and from what I have researched, the pressure treated today is not like older pressure treated wood, much safer.

Pressure treated is what I use. It has been copper based for well over 20 years. No old arsenic and I feel that are perfectly safe to use. Good luck. Gary Always a great video! Here in Texas we are still in the mid 90's so we are patiently waiting for our cooler weather. It could be 100 the second week of October so we need to be careful not to rush. I have seeds started in the seed shelf with 50% shade cover and I'll plant in succession as some of them will bolt with the warm weather. Always great info Gary. Mike

This is our weather too here in Northern California. I was wondering about the shade cloth. I am starting indoors under grow lights right now. But the shade cloth and succession planting sounds like a good idea for the seeds starts. We get our first frost in mid-November, so maybe shade cloth over the beds after transplanting too (if still too hot). Thanks for the info. 🌱

@@jeans-fc1dq Shade cloth for keeping the hot sun from burning and shade cloth for keeping warm in the cold times. 40% shade cover works. I would only use the white shade cover. This will allow some sun to come through. Mike
