So if you didn't make as much progress as William then let me tell you this : You are not a failure and you might not be less talented than him. He simply has the best conditions to learn blender and executed well and passionated so you gotta respect him for that. Yes his stuff is pretty inspiring to me but: He is young and has a lot of time compared to a 25 year old that needs to cook his own food, needs to work etc. He already had access to Final Cut and other programs which cost hundreds of dollars - not even to mention the iPhone or a good computer to run blender. So not every kid at that age has access to so much money. He speaks good english what means he has access to good education at a young age what makes it easier for him to learn new stuff. He said his Dad downloaded Blender for him so I guess he has supporting parents. Not every kid has supporting parents that care. Everybody learns Blender under different circumstances. Don't let the success of others diminish your value and self worth.

I'm a 49 year old father of three. Even the dog requires 1.5 hours commitment every day for his exercise. My house needs constant DIY, so that's for weekends. I only get to learn / play / practice 3d In the evening during the week and after work. Often one of my children will require attention too. Quite often I may only have about an hour each day to invest in 3D. It sucks but for me I only discovered it 10 years ago. With my enthusiasm and motivation to get better at it I have to really plan my limited spare time. I know for a fact if I'd discovered it two decades sooner I would be something along the lines of a CD or something now. Hey ho, I get a buzz from it. You're never too old to learn!

@@venom777ff6 absolutely not. You’re practically a fetus. I started using Blender when I was around 30 years old. What Erin says “certain personality types lens themselves more to the grind than others”, people who have a negative outlook are the wrong personality type, you have to be able to persevere. This is much more important than what age you begin at.

As a Photoshop enthusiast of 16 years, this leaves me absolutely in awe of William's incredible talent and at the same time embarrassed to be so low level compared to him. Great choice of interview Andrew! And well done William for what you've achieved so far and thank you for all your insights! I'm 67 next birthday and have been learning Blender for just under two years since lockdown, although I have been doing art since I was a small child and did it professionally for much of my life in different forms. I would say that I am obsessed with Blender. I can easily spend up to 14 hours a day on it and often do (I live alone). I think that for some people, the ability to imagine something then go ahead and make it look real, or even make it in real life, is like being a wizard. And when something seems difficult I see that as a sort of filter. There are those who would give up at that point while a few would find a way through it to the other side. There is an inner sense of triumph and power in that. After a while you start coming across problems no-one has made a tutorial about or posted about. Then you know you are getting into the area of breaking new ground. That is really inspirational. One more thought about Blender and the online community is that I have never seen a situation where even a beginner can exchange questions and ideas with people right at the top of the field. Imagine we could have sat down in a workshop with Leonardo Da Vinci or Thomas Edison or some other great artist/thinker in their subject. Now we can do that! It's totally amazing! Thanks again to all the brilliant guys who make the tutorials that help us learn.

This was golden and full of insightful thoughts on the frame of thought, learning, and becoming a 3D artist. Just getting into Blender after spending the past 10 years creating digital paintings. I've always found it a bit daunting just the concept of creating anything in 3D, not even to the scale William has done. It's truly fascinating as an art medium. I loved all the open and transparent support for other 3D leaders like Derek Elliott and everyone else cited in the notes. Shared with video with two of my nieces and nephews they are 12 and 10 in hopes they will be inspired. I look forward to learning more from the vast Blender community and openly available 3D artists online. I believe the internet is still grossly under-utilized for growth, with so many resources... though it can be scary and confusing to know which way to go or start on something. The thoughts shared were beyond valuable!! Subbed to both channels!

His final tip, about adding trash, is very good. Real life is imperfect. Real life is dirty. Surfaces have smudges and fingerprints, scratches and scuff marks. There's dust everywhere. Even things that have been cleaned will have grime in the cracks, and stuff will have been smeared all over instead of being fully removed. No manufacturing process creates a perfect shape. The first thing I say to anyone asking for feedback on any kind of realistic art is add imperfections. In practical terms, any surface texture should have variable roughness. First thing I do with any procedural texture material is add noise to the roughness, with a map range node or color ramp to give it an ideal average value but some variance from there.

Kids are born wanting to learn, and they have a tremendous capacity for it. But it's not that adults lack this capacity, it's that adults have less time and they usually had the love of learning beaten out of them by school. It's why I'm very much in favor of homeschooling and "un-schooling" where kids are just given the opportunity to explore those interests they have to go learn whatever it is that they want to learn, with just some guidance from interested and loving parents who can make sure to nudge them in the right directions sometimes, but never, ever do anything to diminish their child's enthusiasm. I did play around a bit with 3D art when I was William's age, but I was much more interested in how computers worked and doing programming, so I started programming around the age when he first got into Blender. I did it all at home. It wasn't until late in high school when I had the opportunity to take a college-level class in computer science. Pretty much all of the things I've enjoyed learning the most, the things that are my passions today as an adult are those things I learned outside of school, entirely self-directed, with some encouragement from at least one parent. The subjects I'm least passionate about, those are the ones I was forced to learn at school, whether or not I was good at them.

So, fix your mindset, dedicate yourself and grind away and have fun and enjoy the process of learning...have patience it takes time. Watching this is inspiring. I had used Blender for a very short times years ago, when the only beginner tutorials were the rubber ducky, the flashlight, and a gingerbread man. 1.x.something. I got so far as animations, but never got into texturing because it required flamingo or something like that. Walked away for a month or two, came back, could not figure out how to even select the blasted cube. Found myself having to revisit the same old tutorials just to figure out which key did what. I got very frustrated very quickly. Recently thought to give it another go, the new UI, and seeing what this kid has done in such a short time... all of it makes me want to start again. This time instead of a ducky I think I'll try some donuts, lol. Maybe in 4 years I can get to where this kid has gotten. He's amazing!
