Hello, really enjoyed your videos. You provide some of the best detailed videos I’ve watched. I have a 2001 Mercury 125hr with no spark. I just moved from high elevation to lower. I cleaned 4 carbs and replaced the jets. Put all back together and she would not start. I would like to try diagnosis myself and follow your detailed video testing stator, trigger and rectifier/ regulator. I purchased a 12 volt remote starter switch from harbor freight. I have looked online how to connect to my motor but found nothing very educational. Can you do a video on how to install a remote started switch. I am working on this motor by myself. Thank you so much.

I had an older Merc 20 hp in the 70's and it acts very similar to the one that you are working on and it is still not fixed. I replaced the coils and the high speed coil and the motor would not rev up at all and only run on idle at WOT. I will check my timing, low speed coil, even CDI box even though there is good spark. I hope the reed valves are good. Looks like we are on a similar journey. Looking forward to your next video.

Ralph Barker … I’m sorry your still having issues with your motor. I’m curious if you tried cleaning your carb? I’m thinking the problem is a clogged high speed jet. Im going to clean and rebuild the carb and fuel pump next🤞and hopefully solve the problem. Thanks for your suggestions. Stay tuned to see if the carb/fuel pump is the problem.

Yes, I cleaned the carb and put new fuel pump gaskets on it as well and it did not make a difference.

@@ralphbarker7791 ok thanks for the information. I’m doing the same, just waiting on parts. If this does not work I’ll be checking the peak voltage outputs from the High Speed Coil and switchbox using my Volt meter and DVA adapter while it’s idling.

I 'm following this as I has a 1971 and a 1973 Mercury outboard. The 71's is a points engine but it's wiring was falling apart. Neither is firing at the moment.

Remove each wire one at a time and remake them with boots and marine grade tinned wire, be sure to include all earth leads too. Then check points and gaps, ensure insulator blocks aren't cracked. I've just gone through the same process on a 20hp I got for next to nothing and she now has great spark! One coil was bad but replacement wasn't too hard to find.

@@mickiannello3767 Thank you for your excellent suggestions. I found the problem in the kill circuit wiring harness. I have replaced the bad sections of corroded wiring leading to the switchbox . Also the owner connected a ground wire from the switchbox to the orange kill circuit that was also causing the no spark condition. The motor starts fine now but the motor bogs down and stalls when increasing the throttle. I believe the issue is a dirty high speed jet in the carb or the high speed coil may be bad under the flywheel. I will continue to dig in to fix the problem. Mikael Eriksson… to find the right part number go to www.marineengine.com and look up your motor by horsepower, year and model number. Then cross reference that number on eBay to locate the exact part you need. Good luck!

Did you end up finding information for testing that switch box? I’m going through my engine I have spark on the top cylinder but the bottom wasn’t firing. I was thinking the switch box was the culprit but I can’t find information on testing it.

Brendan Klostermann…. Try www.CDIelectronics.com they may have the resistance and peak voltage specs for your motor. Click on Technical Support and then Technical Support Documents then DVA charts. You should be able to find the needed information here. Once you rule out the Stator, Trigger, Coils, Kill circuit, bad ground, bad wiring as the problem you have to assume the problem is with the switchbox. I don’t believe there is any information specific to the switchbox unless it’s available in the specific Service Manual for this particular motor.

Josue Deras … From what I can find on www.marineengine.com The electric Starter Motor part number is 50-97949A1. It’s no longer available but you might be able to find it on eBay
