If a comic strip lasts half a century and is only missing a single panel out of its entire archive, I'd say thats impressive.

Not only that, it's a title panel, so at most we lost a mostly pointless panel

The Schulz estate has been extremely good at preserving and archiving everything that was originally made by Schulz. There was also another Sunday strip whose top row of panels was missing for years, and when they published the complete set from that year, they had a placeholder. But they did find the original panels a couple years later.

The Dark Horse Comics adaptation of the Nintendo game ARMS was also canceled, but no reason was given, and they seem to imply it was going to build upon the lore of the game. I kind of wonder it was canceled for similar reasons. :(

There's one I think you should be aware of. Marvel Comics planned a 3 part graphic novel of Bob Marley, only the first 2 were ever published (Iron and Lion). The final comic in the series was to be titled Zion, but Marvel never published it. It is said to have been completed, but was never published.

OOOOOHHHHH! That sounds really cool! Lost Media followers don't count toys or toylines as media. Comic books are considered literature, literature considered a media. I don't entirely agree or disagree with lost/cancelled toylines in general due to the media attached. Pack in stories, concept designs, unused character creations stuff like that can be considered media. I wouldn't count the actual unproduced toys alone, unless they're somehow a media format on their own.

Sometimes it is amazing what is lost For example did you know that Plato's "Dialogs" is incomplete? You know the story that introduced Atlantis and its story to the world, the story cuts after the gods gather and tell Poseidon that he has to do something about the atlanteans since they are going out of control with their conquests The whole sinking of Atlantis is simply inferred from what we have but we don't actually know how it ends

About the “death in the family” comic...I heard there was botting involved in getting robin killed Which seems about right
@ajclements4627
@ajclements4627 3 жыл бұрын
Well, if me calling that number (a lot) to have them kill that version of Robin is considered to be a bot, then yes. 😁 For 36 hours, beginning on September 15, 1988, readers could call the two numbers to cast a ballot on whether he should live or not. Over 10,000 votes were cast, with a narrow majority in favor of killing the character. (Approximately 10,614 votes were cast during this period. When tallied, the final results were extremely narrow, with 5,343 votes in favor of Jason's death over 5,271 for his survival-a margin of just 72 votes.) In Batman #428, the Joker kills Todd by blowing up the warehouse in which he is held hostage.

one of my favorite webcomics, Cheap Thrills, stopped updating in 2012 after 6 years, then “officially” ended in 2013. i was devastated, as i grew up with these characters, and chapter 4 was left on an intense cliffhanger. HOWEVER the artist is now completing chapter 4 on their Patre0n, and has rebooted the comic. Im not super excited about the reboot, since the characters are all humans now instead of their original animals, but im just glad the story is coming back.

Okay so I want to add something I don’t think anyone would be in possession of. There’s this Austrian supermarket chain called Billa and sometime in the 2000s they had a promotional comic that was also a coloring book. The story followed a boy and a girl in kind of medieval times and they went to the nearby town and found all of the townspeople in some weird sleep state. From what I remember you could somehow be involved in how the story progressed, as in you could probably call or email them ideas, but soon after that comic the store closed in my town and I can’t find any evidence of that comic existing.

@(MediaGuy) I'm not sure exactly but I believe it was some kind of situation where it was on a college campus and you downloaded the files and executed them to view the comic, is judging by the second oldest known webcomic that came out a year after witches and stitches this webcomic being The F.O.X, these were very primitive digital art webcomics, like literally made from Pixel art not as a stylistic choice but because there was no other way of creating comics digitally at that point that looked exactly like a drawn strip, so another interesting note on this front is the first published digitally made comic, originally physically published by 1first comics shatter was made primarily with an apple 2 and released from 84 to 88
@helious5056
@helious5056 3 жыл бұрын
@(MediaGuy) The F.O.X can still be found on the internet, I believe there's a few archives of it on archive.org but the only one I was able to find on there that worked was the one with the thumbnail that has Star Trek the next generation characters in it alongside some dude poorly edited into the picture, I believe it's mostly still intact but there could be some missing strips here and there Shatter is completely not lost, and there are two physical copies of it that have been released over the years the first one is a full color copy which is a bit more pricey and the second is a black and white version which is also still pretty pricey depending on when you're looking, in a similar shatter you could also check out Batman digital Justice which I believe is the first mainstream comic to really use digital art in particularly 3D digital art and it's pretty cool And witches and stitches is completely lost with very little possibility of it being found but who knows, I believe there is a blog post in a Wikipedia page on witches and stitches and it's Creator too if you want to learn more

Fun Fact: the perception that jason todd was hated by the comic book community is a false one created after the fact. At the time fans that called the 1-800 number voted overwhelmingly to let him live. However One person used an auto-dialer to flood the line to kill robin, skewing the vote. Not that I'm Complaining Killing off Jason Todd was a fantastic character moment for batman, too bad they had to ruin it by bringing him back.

In Japan there's a company called Shogakukan which publishes a lot of manga in magazines including various series based on video games. While some of them have been published in their own books such as Super Mario-kun and the Kirby manga, there are other series that never got their own books and are mostly lost. There are two that I have a lot of interest in that both ran from 1992-1994. Sonic the Hedgehog This is most likely the earliest adaptation of Sonic as it started being published in April 1992, a few months before the Archie comics started. It's about a 10 year old hedgehog boy in school named Nicky who turns into Sonic the Hedgehog whenever there's danger. It's pretty unusual seeing Sonic as just an alter ego which is a big part of what makes this manga stand out. It's also worth noting that Amy Rose and Charmy Bee originated from this manga before they were characters in the games. While a lot of issues have been found and a few have been fan translated, there are still many issues that are currently lost. Otenba Peach-hime (Tomboy Princess Peach) This was a gag manga about the Mario Bros. characters as kids, and it mainly focused on Princess Peach who was portrayed a tomboy (before Princess Daisy was given this personality in the games.) A few issues have been found (though not translated yet), but a great majority of the series is currently lost which is a shame since it's one of the most unique things I've seen done with Princess Peach in official media. The artist has an official website and has posted a couple of pages from it. She's done artwork for a lot of manga that is unknown to English speaking audience.

Another less-known Marvel one: in the 70s Marvel punlished the first "Contest of Champions", Marvel's, as well as mainstream's, first limited series ever. The three issue miniseries featured EVERY Marvel character having appeared at the time, the cover of the first issue alone featured a plethora of heroes. The first issue (by Mike Zeck? I don't quite remember the artist) was to show a new addition to Marvel's ever-growing pantheon: Sinbad! Who came up with this idea, and more interesting, *_why?_* , is unknown. But Sinbad in the Marvel universe never happened (he appeared many years later, but that's another story), probably because such a well-known, classical free-domain character every other company could use, was deemed a bad idea. Marvel, and later Disney, showed the same ambiguity regarding characters like Dracula and Frankenstein's Monster for example, making no mention of either one for quite some years. Anyway - the cover of Contest of Champions # 1, showing Sinbad among the many various superheroes, has already been finished, before they decided to not include him after all. The artist pencilled another cover - and the original cover art, showing Sinbad, has disappeared since. There are not even pictures of the cover as far as I know. Sinbad was added to the Marvel universe later, albeit decades later (and somewhat out of character). The fans would have REALLY loved seeing Sinbad among the Marvel superheroes.

I think that was Arabian Knight, not Sinbad. AK was also one of the heroes chosen by Death to represent her in the Contest of Champions against the Grandmaster, his teammates being Iron Man and Sabra. He overcame his dislike of the Israeli heroine to win their battle against She-Hulk, Captain Britain and Defensor. Mark Gruenwald, Bill Mantlo & Steven Grant (w), John Romita, Jr. (p), Pablo Marcos (i). "A Gathering Of Heroes" Marvel Super Hero Contest Of Champions, volume 1 #1 (June 1982)

@@dolliesdieyes5590 NP, I had CoC and had no idea Marvel even had licensed Sinbad for a hot minute. I still kick myself for not picking up their Godzilla or Shogun Warriors titles back in the 70s, I was really into Shang Chi then.

@@ajclements4627 The thing is, Marvel didn't license Sinbad, they didn't have to. We're talking about the classic, 1001 nights arabian guy, there is nobody holding any rights to a character like this. I'd bet that was the reason Marvel decided to not use him; every other company could have used Sinbad, too. Comic companies are not very hot for characters and properties that are free for everyone.

@@ajclements4627 Yeah, I feel you. "Shogun Warriors" was so-so imho, but "Godzilla" was a pretty fun title. Along with "Micronauts" and "Rom, Spaceknight", which very pretty good. And of course the famous and important "Crystar the Crystal Warrior" :D Micronauts was a pretty good space opera, and Rom was a fun action title; I especially dug that everyone was bound to make an appearance in Rom, from Torpedo to the Beyonder...

I’ve got a lost comic that’s really obscure. Carlos Trillo and Carlos Meglia, two Argentine comic creators (and the creators of the comic Cybersix) had another comic series called Irish Coffee. Apparently in the mid to late 90’s they published some chapters of Irish Coffee in the newspaper Clarín. To my knowledge these chapters have never been republished, and aside from a handful of chapters that people online have saved, they appear to be lost.

I have one piece of lost media you could cover: Jim's Story. It was David Firth's first cartoon series but he has since taken it down from the internet. I managed to uncover some bits of it and a full episode (Jim's Story 5) but the others in their entirety remain lost. A good place to start is on David's official site (Fat-Pie). Then search up 'Angelfire Jim's Story' to find his older site. I highly recommend sticking primarily to the Wayback Machine for this search. It's going to be a hella lot of trial and error but you might find something I haven't Here is a tip: If there is a link section, try find anything that could potentially contain Jim's Story stuff. NOTE: The humour in Jim's Story is pretty edgy (even for its time) as it was made 1999-2001. If you really want to play it safe, just avoid downloading/viewing anything that may push the 'line'. Safe travel.

Re: Jason Todd (A Death in the Family - Robin Lives), You description of Jason Todd is imcompleat - Jason Todd was originally introduced as a red hair 'clone' of Dick Grayson...down to being an orphaned acrobat in Batman (volume 1) #357 (March 1983), then becoming Robin in Batman (volume 1) #366 (Dec 1983) but following Crisis on Infinite Earths (1985-1986) Jason was 'rebooted' as a kid living on the streets who tries to steal the tires off of the Batmobile in Batman (volume 1) #408 (June 1987), and it's that one Jason Todd 2.0 who was killed in A Death in the Family.

Some Peanuts strips are longer because comic strips on Sunday are made longer. However, some newspaper will omit some of the first few panels to save space. Artists have to work around this, and not put any crucial context in those first panels. This is probably why the Peanuts panels are lost, it's because some newspaper didn't run them at all.

I don't think it would be practical, since it's so big and underesearched, but maybe lost fanfics or internet fiction writing would be a cool topic to cover. I say that because the one piece of lost media that hurts me to no end is that one pokemon fanfic I wasn't able to finish.
