@@DiogoVKersting I for example didnt dislike it, but I didnt love it. I learned that I prefer the platforming in metroidvanias more than the fighting (and Hollow Knight has lots of fighting and REALLY annoying backtracking to bosses from benches). The place in hollow knight I enjoyed the most, was the place most players hated: Path of Pain...sadly that was over pretty quickly, but I loved that. Dont get me wrong its still a great game, but has its flaws. And I know its great, but Its not up there with my fav. metroidvanias and couldnt dethrone Guacamelee...still, just my opinion, not a fact.

@A J Agree on quite many points. Bying the map is kinda stupid, why not let the player just discover the map more when you progress. Certain things like compas should be just permanent thing you get. Traversing becomes tedious really fast. Getting new skills takes a lot of time in the beginning. At first money is important to buy the first pins, but after that money means NOTHING. So for first hours it feels devastating to die, then it means nothing. Only penalty is that if you have map bought and you die, you wont be able to update your map. Battle at first is hit, enemy bounces back, hit and repeat. On bigger enemies you backdown after 1-2 hits and repeat. Enemies also like to tumble on you from attacks and you take a hit just by touching them. 🙉 Well not every game is for everybody. Played around 7 hours, killed 6 bosses, got the dash, groundslam and first nailart + one uprgrade for the nail (still felt like I would have to hit everything 4-xx times). Enjoyed way more of dead cells, ori 2, hades, salt and sanctuary and even bloodstained (in that one bosses seriously tumble or walk on you like retards 🙊 magic is cool tho).

@A J I played for 76 hours on PC, plus some more on the switch and I plan to play more still. I don't think the game is perfect (no game is perfect), but I have two main reasons for liking it. One is that I feel they got the difficulty just right to feel challenging, but not frustrating (with some exceptions after the endgame). The other is the music, which I absolutely love (I listen to it even outside the game). Of course all of that is subjetive, and each player experiences each game differently. As for the point that the game is focused on combat, that's totally true. The only part where the platforming itself is more challenging is the white palace. As for traversing itself taking too long, I didn't mind that too much. I feel like that's kind of expected from exploration and metroidvania style games. The game also makes ample use of shortcutting, so often going a second time to a certain place is a lot quicker. There's also a skill you learn in the midgame, which greatly reduces the need for "backtracking".

This is just our opinion so we would love to know what your top 5s are, which would you have put in this list that we may have the list. Nintendo really needs to improve their eShop setup. I haven't even seen or heard of most of these games. Some sort of user rating system would probably help make games like this more visible. Thank you for highlighting more overlooked games on the system

Great video with some games I hadn't heard of and will definitely be checking out! One small suggestion I have however is to leave the title of the game you're speaking about/showing throughout the entire clip for each game. I tend to watch these videos while multitasking, and I hate turning over after hearing you speak of a good game and see the cool clip playing, but have to go back and search for the bit where the name was shown/mentioned. Sorry for being THAT guy

My top 10: 1. Hollow Knight - Here I agree with you. Couldn’t be done better! 2. Blaster Master Zero - The first game I completed on the switch. It stoped me playing Breath Of The Wild those days :-) 3. Cave Story - Weird but funny story, I loved every second of it! 4. Bloodstained Curse Of The Moon - I love the feature of the different characters, This has more Castlevania feeling in it than the last official sequels. 5. Dead Cells - Hard as Hell, but worth a ride every time I put it in. Just can’t finish it to this day :-( 6. Steam World Dig 2 - A wonderful game!!! Like every Steamworld title 7. Slain, Back from hell - Metal Soundtrack and good but far from perfect gameplay. 8. The Mummy - What a surprise a great movie game in our days! Worth the money and the time! 9. Salt and Sanctuary - So dark but so romantic! Like a gothic building a dark atmosphere in every corner! Loved it! 10. Castle Of Hearts - The guilty pleasure in this list: Controls from the very depths of hell!!! Unfair corners and unstoppable enemies in the later game makes it hard to love, but I bought it while I was awaiting the Darksouls port and being a Knight was all I wanted! Had a crush on the “Donkey Kong like” lore drives down the rooftops!

The mummy demastered is fun but when you die you lose your powerups and health upgrades and have to get back to your body with just the regular gun and no health upgrades and fight your old body that's fully powered up. If the save point is far from where you died it's almost impossible to get back bc the enemies take away over a quarter of your health. And if you die to your old body then that makes 2 you have to fight. Late in the game when you die it makes it pretty much impossible to get your powerups back unless you die right by a save point. You have to fight your way thru enemies who kill you in 4 or 5 hits or less and who are bullet sponges to your regular gun and then if you do make it past all those you have to fight your old self who is way more powerful than you. It's super aggravating and makes the game unplayable at that point.

Hollow Knight is the bomb, enriched with content in a expansively gloomy land and the feeling of loneliness with the bizzare encounters makes this by far one of the best games I've played and with its must do replay value to get all endings and dlc it's a no brainer

Hollow Knight (easily my favorite game of the last 10 years) 4. Aria of Sorrow 5. Bloodstained ROTN 6. Axiom Verge 7. Dawn of Sorrow/Portrait of Ruin/Order Of Ecclesia (well, half of it lol) 8. The Messenger (again, half of it) 9. Steamworld Dig 2 10. Ori Honorable mentions are Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion, Environmental Station Alpha, & Salt and Sanctuary (more of a 2D souls-like though) Also, if Metroid Prime counts, it would be tied with Hollow Knight at #3

I played ALL of these except the new ones... My Top 5 are Guacamelee 2.. Monster Boy... The Messenger... The Mummy... And Yoku Island Express... I did not include Axiom Verge/ Cave Story/ Guacamelee 1/ Steamworl Dig 1 on my list because I played them many years ago on other systems.

You are right about the linearity. The core of this stealth game branches forth paths of intricate level design akin to Metroid and Castlevania. There is still exploration to be had in this title even though those said paths lead to a narrowed finishing point. In which areas are broken up into different parts while retaining those maze like designs.

Momodora, Dandara and Owlboy are some of my favorite Metridvanias of all time so... For me they would be just next to the top! I also love Ori to death, and it may be coming to Switch soon. And there is one, that's not on the same level, but still good, called Omega Strike. Simple, Short and Sweet.

Broden Miller I’m pretty sure 112 is highest. You get some % for each pantheon you complete also. I haven’t completed the pantheon of hollowness yet, so maybe it goes past 112, but I don’t think so. I just beat it on steel soul mode in just over 6 hours; don’t ask me how lol.

Which is metroidvania all the way, with option to play it as rogue Lite... Ghost 1.0 severely underrated This from which goto game is super metroid, when ever I'm bored...

Dandara isn't a metroidvania Citeria for one: Must have required backtracking, and be able to foster a want to explore. Must have an in game map you can fill out via traversing the game. Must have an ability progression system. Finally it must be a 2d platformer I call this the bga2 scale, and Dandara only fits criteria 1&2. A metroidvania needs to fit all 4

Sundered is super underrated in my opinion. It is actually easily my #2 favorite Metroidvania. It was such a blast. I played for hours on end. I cant even remember the last game before Sundered that I played for for so long that my hand was cramping lol But yeah #1 is Hollow Knight. Anyone who disagrees is just plainly flat-out wrong.

i know it was released on the switch fairly recently but Terraria is on the Switch now. Even though it focuses on building more than other Metroidvania games the playstyle is still classified as such. With 27 million copies sold I think there are plenty of people that would put it on their list.

I tried to play Axiom Verge and honestly did not get the hype. I feel like it's TOO much inspired by Metroid in a way that I find annoying. Like if I want to play a metroid game in every sense than I'll just play Metroid and at least get to play as Samus. I preferred the fan game Another Metroid 2 Remake. Hollow Knight is my favorite though. Absolutely right on that one.

I gave up on Axiom Verge a little early in the game, however seeing some of the weapon and ability upgrades shown in this video I'm thinking of picking it up again. I gave up on Ori and the Blind Forest early on too, but after picking it up again it became my favorite game of all time. Hopefully Ori will be announced for Switch on Tuesday at E3.

@@mrkristopher I never finished it either. The visual design ripping so much from Metroid irked me real bad and than the awkward design in parts. Like there's a part in the game where you have a gun that interacts with pixelated parts of the map but you assume it works for doors only because that's where you've only seen it up till then so I was totally unaware it was needed for some later platforming that I was just wondering around forever. Game just really annoyed me. Also enemies that look like flying donuts and the like. Just... Ugh.. Maybe one of these days I'll beat it though. I always have the choice to redownload it. Its not the worst game in the genre to play for sure but for various reason it just did not gel for me

I had the same feeling as you have, but i would advice you to play the game a little further. Because after a certain point the game opens up and all the pieces start falling into place.

I played more than 200 dead cell runs on pc and that was one hell of a game. I don't know much about the switch version but it does live up to the hype

I played (& loved) The Messenger, can't wait for the DLC. I'm currently playing Monster Boy and it's a great game truly deserving of your time. Mummy Demastered, La-Mulana 2 & Axiom Verge are definitely on my sights...while I'd love to also include Dead Cells, the rogue-like style of its gameplay does not appeal to me. I would've give it a shot if the new physical edition included the DLC on the card but it apparently doesn't.

I have around 15 of those games and they're really worth the time of any fan of the genre. Most of them are really immersive. I especially liked The Mummy, A Robot Named Fight and The Messenger, although I see the Messenger as a classic platformer through most of its length, then there's some backtracking. Hollow Knight will be #1 in lists for a long time. It's incredible how much work devs put into it. It's a diamond and absolutely not in the rough. Absolutely polished and refined. You mentioned Momodora in the end, but for me it'd easily be in the list. I love that game! Now it's time for Timespinner. Downloaded but not played it yet. And I have an issue to solve with Gato Roboto. I beat the last boss, watched the final sequence and all, but when I access the save file to find the % remaining, Kitty is in a room with the dog, which has another room under it with the rat in it, and that's it. Nowhere to go

@@AllenTax Dandara & Iconoclasts shouldn't even be on this list as they aren't metroidvanias. They are quite linear with only a simulated feel of upgrade progression and little focus on exploration. This list is pretty bs for other reasons. Most games on this list aren't even metroidvanias such as Steamworld, and Wonder Boy.

I love salt and sanctuary! I’m on new game+ 7. My character is really OP. It’s kinda tough on the first 2 or 3 play throughs, but if you upgrade correctly and craft some great weapons, it gets pretty easy.

Ghost 1.0 would absolutely make my list.. I have it and loved it so much..I have over half of the games in this list and prefer Ghost to many of them.. so.. yeah. There's my answer to that. Most obvious replacement for me is a robot named fight, which i really don't enjoy playing, it just "feels" wrong to me, the platforming, action.. doesn't gel at all.

I personally couldn't get anywhere near 20 hours of gameplay out of Iconoclasts (it was more along the lines of 15 hours), and it still has problems - however, one of the best storytelling games of the genre there.

Hollow Knight was just terrific, Guacamelee 1 was the direct opposite to the rest of the genre, regarding how it didnt take itself very seriously and embraced how fun a metroidvania can be (even though I found it to be a little short and kinda repetetive in gameplay) and Axiom Verge is the game that feels closest to Super Metroid, in both athmosphere and gameplay.
