I just bought a 2006 NC Miata 6-speed manual last week. I drove it from Tampa, FL to Cary, NC where I live. It is bone stock, so the ride was super comfortable, but still extremely fun to drive. Especially with the top down. Such an amazing road trip car. 11-hour drive, and I was completely fine at the end. One of the best car experiences I've had in a long time.

I have wanted one ever since this one week 7-8 years ago, when my MK3 Golf was broken and I needed a car to get to work. A good friend of mine lent me his '94 NA Miata for that week, and I didn't want to give it back. I knew I had to have one. End of last Sept. I came home with a ND2. OMG I love the car... I still want an NA for it's cute quirky pop-up light charm, but I love my ND sooooo much. My mother in law went with me on the test drive and she said, "you have to buy this car, you never stopped smiling the entire time you were behind the wheel". And she proceeded to harass me for a solid week while I "thought about it."

Just a tid bit on coilovers from an NA owner: The most respected coilovers in the Miata enthusiasts space are Xidas, which were built from the ground up for the Miata, as well as Ohlins. Something more street oriented/less hardcore you can do some simple konis with the right spring rates for a daily, or Technas (a more daily driver focused version of the Xidas). I always see BC Racing and Fortune Auto suggested on Alex's videos for the Miata, and I'm here to tell you it gets better than even those

I have an NA and an NB. I've been debating selling the NA because its just been sitting in my front yard for a few years. I really don't want to and I'd rather 1.8 swap it and get it back on the road. The NB is my daily. It's been tuned to 266whp on 93 octane. It has some TR Motorsport 15x9s on it. I'm running 225s in the rear and 205s in the front. Since I bought it, I've gradually been adding upgrades. (Far too many to list) This car is an absolute blast to drive on the track and on the street. I'm not sure how I feel about having 2. Its more of a feeling of pride than anything else. My experience owning 3 NBs is: Take care of all maintenance items first. Upgrade wheels, tires, diy bilstein suspension for the biggest difference, then exhaust, maybe intake, as long as you don't live somewhere dusty. I would go naturally aspirated for a DD for reliability. Forced Induction is ok, as long as you don't push much past 8 psi unless you are prepared to upgrade your bottom end and fuel pump.
@christopherlowery8559 ай бұрын
I'm pushing close to 20psi on my NB. I had to rebuild the engine last summer due to excessive blowby caused by the rings binding. They were never gapped apparently. Ironically, I made the same mistake when I installed the new pistons. I'm running at about 11.5-12 for the WOT AFR target because of this. I've worked on this car about as much as some of the 200K+ mi EG Civics I've owned. The difference here is that most of the maintenance has been upgrades and keeping the car from being clapped out. Working on this car has also been far more rewarding. The turbo was added around 2010. I'm the 5th owner. I've done at least 13 upgrades since I bought it. The previous owner did about 4. I wouldn't call the car unreliable, but it's far from a Toyota Camry. Tuning and upgrading just requires tinkering and addressing all the weakpoints. This is on top of regular maintenance. It comes with the territory is all I can say. If someone hates getting their hands dirty and pays other people to do their auto maintenance, keep this car as stock as possible. Today I'm fighting a high AFR while cruising and a fuel cut at high boost (over 16.5psi) The car is getting hard to start. I think it might just be the fuel filter. (I've never changed it). It might also be the fuel pressure regulator. I'm running a 255lpm Walbro fuel pump and 1000cc injector dynamics injectors. I doubt either are my issue, but I haven't ruled them out. I plan on replacing my fuel filter in the morning. After testing, I might replace the regulator. We'll see what happens. My first upgrade would have to be the ECU. After that, probably exhaust and turbo. Then I would move on to either wheels/tires, injectors/fuel pump, or internals. It dpends on what needed the most attention. Like you said, you're not getting much more than 8psi on stock internals. Therefore, if you still have grip at 8psi, it might be time to tear apart the engine. That's just my take though. Cheers.

Can you change the gearing on the miata rear end? I just want to get my rpms down from 4k at 70mph lmao. Only thing keeping me from loving this car even more.
@christopherlowery8559 ай бұрын
In my miata we swapped to a 6spd and a 3.9 torsen rear end. I still have 4k RPM at 70mph. Depending on your year, you'll have either a 4.1, or 4.3 rear end (unless you have a 6spd). Switching to a 3.9 would improve your situation (if you have a 5spd), but would make the car more sluggish/slow. I'd have to swap in my old 5spd to get a reading of the tach with that ring and pinion setup. We swapped the trans and rear end at the same time. I did find a 5.28:1 ring and pinion set. It would give you a lot more torque, but would probably worsen your top end. So yes, its possible. I don't know if you'll find a gear ratio smaller than 3.9 for a miata. Maybe Alex can help. Best of luck. Cheers.

I had racelands on my miata when I bought it. I upgraded to Tein Flex Zs. They're ok. My wheels are TR Motorsports 15x9 +36 wheels. They're around $200ea. Both do the job I need them to do. If I could find another brand of wheel that made 15x9s with a greater offset (+38), I might pick them up. However, that's probably reaching into the custom 2-piece territory. A miata is too cheap for that.

@christopherlowery8559 ай бұрын
@@MrHeisenb3rg At least your girlfriend rides in your car. My wife has never even sat in mine. The Flex-Zs bounce around quite a bit. At least on my settings. I have them pretty stiff, but I'm also riding 3" off the ground. The fronts are set at a stiffness of 8 due to tire rub during compression. Between that setting and a sway bar, its very rare if the front rubs the fender well. The rear I've never had an issue with. I left them at a stiffness of 5, or factory default. I do wish the stiffness levels were more refined, but I can't justify spending $2-4k on a set of coilovers. I need some convincing to spend that much on a car that costs $5k. I just looked at my rear tires today and found sidewall cracking and radial starting to show. So I ordered some new ones. I might need a camber plate to be honest. These tires are only 2yrs old. Have fun on your racelands. At least you have coilovers. It could be worse, you could be riding on chopped springs. Cheers mate.
