@talkingBS Жыл бұрын
I have an EV. I agree that the up front costs are too expensive. That said, no oil changes, no gas (electricity is about 1/4 cost of gas at a supercharger and about 1/10 cost of gas at home). Few moving parts will mean less maintenance. Over the course of 10 years or 200,000km a tesla today is cheaper than a ford/toyota by the end of car life. That said, upfront cost is a major factor in auto purchases. We will see prices come down now that we are past inflationary peaks. Expect a model y for $60k within 2 years as costs come down and product scaling continues.

I just complete 1 year ownership of my first EV. Upfront cost is high, but saving 300$ dollars average on gas every month. Put that towards your lease or finance payment and it balances out the monthly payment vs a new luxury ice car. Maintenance costs will be a fraction of ICE cars after year 4. I plan to keep it for 8 years. Hope Canada also offers a ev purchase incentive to compete with the 7500$ in the US. This would help all sorts.

I'm Canadian in BC and have had a Hyundai Kona EV since 2019, so coming on 4 years. Range and charging have been no problem, in fact it's much easier not having to visit a gas station. I take two or three long trips (greater than 4 hour drive) per year and charging has been fine. The problem with Canada is that we get screwed over when it comes to model availability and price. The Chevy Bolt dropped its price in the US but kept it the same in Canada and the Leaf is ridiculously priced for what it is. Car manufacturers don't allot enough cars for the Canadian market. If this doesn't change I don't see how Canada can meet these goals. I'm about to sell my car now and unfortunately I'll be going back to gas for the next vehicle because I just can't get a decently priced electric. I didn't mind paying the premium price once, but I can't afford to do it again.

I have been driving Teslas for 8 years now in Canada. I've owned 4 and have 2 in the family now. Superchargters have become widely available and travel anywhere is no problem. No so 8 years ago. The cost of operation compared with Canada's very high priced gas pays for the car. Contrary to popular opinion of non-EV owners most charging is done at home at low cost. About 90% in my case. So the availability of public chargers is less important than most think. But i still depend on them and use them when I need to. If you are on the road traveling all the time they are essential. When the model 3 was just a reservation and not yet available over one third of the reservations world wide were in the Toronto area. The service and delivery centers around here are very very busy. I wouldn't be surprised to see the 20% be achieved without much trouble, But who knows?

More than 98% of electricity is generated from hydrocentral where we live, so it's also good for environment . But the most satisfying thing is the incentives we got, about 13000 CAD (or 10000 USD) per car! . Our electrical bill is almost the same, we pay 10-15$ more per month than we used to pay before owing EVs. Winter is tough, we consume a little bit more, but we don't travel that much when it's too cold, so the range being 25% shorter is not really an issue.

Here on Vancouver Island (BC) I believe sales levels of EV's are already at or above 20%. Victoria may be the highest EV concentration in NA. With the whole province electric production from hydropower and always has been, BC is a total natural for EV use. The key missing vehicle right now are pickup trucks. Almost half the vehicles outside cities are pickups. Once electric pickups show up in numbers and standard car prices drop below ICE we will rapidly go over 50%. We have little to no rest-stop infrastructure and standing outside in winter to quickly refuel is unpleasant. While the near US border band of Canada's more urban population can and will move to EVs more quickly, the large and much less densely populated portions of the Trans Canada highway system need a very large amount of upgrades in combined 24-hour rest/charge stops and as of yet, there is no indication of that beginning.

The problem is that there are still not enough EV chargers and when I was in Victoria, the hotel only has one stall for EV charging. Imagine if there are many more people driving EVs. The other problems with EV are range and cold temperature. I do most drivings in the city and the range is more than sufficient. But I can imagine people living in the Toronto area, where you need to travel on highways everyday and the low end EVs with smaller batt packs just may not have enough range. We just had a snow storm here last week and my M3 loses 5% batt power just by sitting in the garage in the cold (-10C), not being driven. So this is not ideal for people with EVs parked on the street in the winter with the snow.

I've own an EV since 2019 and I'm all into it. I am a born and raised Quebecker. There is a few challenges that the government will have to address before we can all get EVs. The prices are still too high, the waiting time is crazy, availability is insufficient. Furthermore, during the winter, we are always told to lower our electricity usage , since the production of hydroelectricity can't keep up with demand. So I think the Canadian government would have to incentivise people to install solar panels and/or install more wind turbines in fields or shores. There are already a lot of EVs on the Canadian roads. Weather people like them very much or they don't want to talk about it, because they don't believe in the technology. Unfortunately, I don't think that 2025 is achievable. The climate would not allow it. There is a few more problems that I red in the other comments, and most of them are true. I hope I am wrong.

In Northern BC the temperature hit -50 degrees centigrade so the EVs don’t work well when you have to run heaters all the time. In the Yukon in some areas they will run the vehicles 24 hours because the oil will almost freeze and the cars won’t run. Many people use trucks to pull large trailers over longer distances so not practical because they don’t work. Most provinces in Canada do not have hydro power so they burn natural gas in thermal plants to make electricity… all you are doing is moving the C02 emissions to another location. Canada is huge so entire transmission and distribution grid needs to be revamped to handle increased demand for electricity. In the summer and winter the electric grid is running at max so having EVs is not going to work as we do not have enough power to supply vehicles. People cannot afford EVs as most people do not have $50k-100k to buy an EV, charging station, and upgraded 200A services to their homes. Forcing people to buy EVs puts people into poverty as the government is subsidizing green technologies and EVs so everyone pays with higher taxes… Canada’s carbon taxes have done absolutely nothing to stop greenhouse gas emissions and have caused massive inflation. Forcing these green policies in Canada, will destroy the economy, cause inflation, and put people into poverty. Great idea but not going to happen any time soon.

During Last weeks cold snap a MY LR driver did a 180km highway trip finishing at 20%. That means any vehicle with a sub 500km range and/or lacks a heat pump is not suitable for many applications. Those vehicles are very expensive currently as no Tesla qualifies for the federal incentives. The Ioniq 5 is a good candidate, but the dealers are jacking them up in a obscene way so the reasonable MSRP is pretty unavailable (2+ years). I was somewhat hoping that Canada might start seeing Chinese built tesla,(which may come down to the fed limit) and more vehicles from Korea and other places that wont qualify for US subsidies.... but realistically I think that some form of normalization of policies with the US will happen with the Jan announcement in order to get manufacturing here, otherwise we are not able to afford North American built cars. The other side of the problem is of course charging infrastructure, which given the size of the country will be challenging and where IMO the feds should really be focusing instead of vehicle subsidies. Winter and upcoming EV Trucks make these 50kw chargers/ poor reliability worse than useless. Battles with provinces will ensue, My own newly non elected premier who a year ago was peddling conspiracies' as a talk radio host has declared she will save us from EVs. No federal funding for highway projects without charging infrastructure might work... but there will be fighting and sabotage on the part of some provinces.

From Toronto Canada here. Bought a Model Y this year, and seeing Tesla adoption en masses in the major cities Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal. Will be the best selling vehicle for the next few years. Charging in EV is 99 percent at home, and only a few road trips require superchargers. Super easy to charge in frigid minus 20 weather so far. Using credit card trick to open frozen charge port or door handles.

Canadian construction Trades worker here, I need an AFFORDABLE electric pickup, with a minimum winter range of 300 km, to replace my Ford Ranger. SUVs are nice, even something like Simone Geirtz's Truckla would be acceptable for schlepping materials and tools for me. I don't yet have an EV, as both my Honda Civic and Ford Ranger are paid for, and don't cost too much in fuel. Buying any EV at this moment would mean taking on debt I don't want. I'm able to do my own wiring to install a charger, we're in British Columbia where there's over 90% renewable energy and we export lots of it to the Excited States. Ford's and GM's vehicle warranty issues concern me greatly, as does Tesla's refusal to support people living outside the over-subsidized Canadian zone of excessive population south of the 50th parallel. Along Highway 16 in Northern British Columbia there's a serious lack of Tesla Super Chargers, no Tesla Service availability, and it gets worse the further north you live. Manufacturers, Legislators, and Parliamentarians are mostly living and working South of the 50th Parallel, and oblivious to those of us who live North of that geographic marker.

The Canadian government seems to like the sound of its own voice. What it needs to do is support the the development of infrastructure to make real it's 'dreams'. I suspect that the people of Canada rely on their cars greatly and that the distances involved outside the south eastern conurbations might not lend themselves. Let's see.
@tonespeaks Жыл бұрын
@Mark Thomas I'm Canadian and the Government is right on track. What many people don't realize, is that the Automakers will be greatly reducing the number of ICE cars and their prices will climb. By 2030 most manufactures will only make EVs, the main reason for this, is that EVs are easier and cost less to produce, because they require a lot less labour and parts. What most people are missing, is they they are using today's data to predict what will happen in 2 years. Just listen to the Automakers and that tells you where the industry is going. As for the infrastructure to make EVs work in Canada, that is mainly a Provincial Matter, more so that Federal. But even in Alberta they have a thriving EV community. Tesla's can basically be driven across Canada and supercharge. To install charging in cities and homes is quite easy, since most homes are wired for 220v/240v . One of the first Tesla Videos on KZbin was an Alberta guy, driving his Model S all over the province. When people talk about Canada and vast distances, the cold and etc.... they forget that Norway is even colder and they have tons of EVs.

People here are looking at the tree, when they should be looking at the forest. What are the stated plans of members of the W.E.F .and the U.N. ? That people should have NO PRIVATE PROPERTY...and that people should have NO PERSONAL VEHICLES...no gas, diesel or electric vehicles. Look at how they are going about it. #1 The war on pesticides-affects farming, #2 The war on fertilizer-affects farming, #3 the war on water usage-affects farming, #4 the war on meat-affects farming...and #5 the war on fossil fuels-affects farming...and affects everyone that needs a vehicle with sufficient range and electrical supply to access their private property. The hype about E.V.'s is really part of the WEF's war on private property ownership. You have probably heard Klaus Schwab. chairman of the WEF, say " In the future , you will own nothing, and be happy!" (or else!). Hi from Quebec Canada. We (provincial government and it's government-owned corporation - Hydro-Québec) been investing heavily into the development of ev charging stations within our province (over 5000 already) and most of all eastern states (in the USA) (over 125 000 stations). As the rest of Canada is pushing towards EV's, we and BC have also expanded our hydrogen stations and available vehicles. The cost here (QC) is 7,50$/kg that is equivalent to 1gallon (3.785L) of gasoline (which is presently 1,45$/L), the Toyota Mirai has a 5kg capacity (37.50$/550km range); as our production capacity has augmented our cost for H has dwindled (from 10$ in 2019 to 7.50$ in 2023). If an EV necessitate charging from a 100kw fast charging station from 10% to 90% it costs 23.52$ (taking 50min) and from 90% to 100% 5.60$ (11 min). Several years ago we had the first and largest green hydrogen plant in the world. Since then a second one will shortly be operational (private/governmental owned) with a 11,000 metric ton yearly capacity. Lest us not forget Nova Scotia with their own (up and coming) facility and Newfoundland's planned facility for both national and international markets with it's wind farm project. As we are a northern country the cold is the worst enemy for EVs and their limited range is also a point of contention here. Avg range for EVs is 450 km but hydrogen vehicles is closer to 600km. The "filling up" an ev is also a big problem here in winter as the battery should be warmed up prior to be able to utilize a fast charge option. Otherwise the slowest pace will be the one "accepted" by the vehicle thus taking even longer to recharge. The cost of an EV have been reducing over the years but the added expense of the home charger (1750$ if enough room in electrical box) by an registered electrician has slowed down the progression of sales. At present 3% of all vehicles here in Quebec are EVs and 0,7% are hydrogen. The cost of H car is much less than EVs and their longevity also making them a sound choice. Which is prefered by many ice vehicle owner as longevity is always taken into account. I myself own a young 2003 Honda Civic with an annual expense of no more than 800$/yr (excluding oil, tire, rotor & pads and such).

All for environmentally friendly steps forward but how do they plan to reconcile: 1) Shortages of raw materials and components needed to build EV's? 2) Lack of infrastructure to supply the grid with enough electricity? 3) Charging stations to cover most of such a large and rural country? 4) Current environmental and humanitarian atrocities involved in mining cobalt for the batteries? If you take a serious look into these areas and see how impractical such a move to EV's actually is, it leads you to think they either have no idea what they're doing or don't intend much of the population to be able to own a new vehicle in the future.

The province of British Columbia, for example, had 13 percent of sales as EVs last year (2021). Reaching the target 20% by 2025 here will not be an issue. The rest of the provinces need these incentives while EV prices are higher than ICE vehicles. The sentiment is 80 percent of Canadians are open to purchasing an EV, they just need more EV stock available and more of the more affordable models. And the charging infrastructure needs to grow faster, but it has been growing rapidly.

I chose not to buy a PHEV because the limited Electric powered range is more than halfed to around 15km at the -25c winter we have from November to February, which was not enough for daily commute. Full Electric doesn't have enough range travel to nearby Calgary, and needs 4 recharges for a round trip alone, not including and travel in or around Calgary. On a 3 day long weekend, waiting 30 minutes 4 times adds 2 hours to a 6 hour round trip and to go shopping, entertainment, or sightseeing we would need even more. Summers would be better, but still adds 1 hour to a 6 hour drive. Waiting for affordable EV with real world 800 km range so in winter I have atleast a 300km range after 7 years.

Hyundai has a 12-18 month delivery time for the Ioniq 5. The Tesla models aren't affordable for most buyers. Charging isn't a problem in Canada because we have limited draw on the power grid during the night when most EVs are charged. The transition to EVs will be like sudden advances in the computer industry. As soon as EVs are readily available (2025 and forward) the sales will sky-rocket. Canada isn't planning to allow large-scale sales of Chinese EVs because of our political differences. It's amusing to me...Canadians buy endless amounts of Chinese plastic but we'll limit the number of EVs allowed into our country.

Hello, EV. I watch your presentations as I cycle or row 2X/day so I guess I’m a regular follower. Here’s a Canadian perspective on your recent broadcast as someone who is in his second Tesla (both Model 3s) in 3 years: 1. We are paying at least a 30% premium exchange rate for US-built EVs like Tesla, Rivian, Lucid and other EVs originating in the US. For example my new M3 LR was CAN $76,000.00 vs a US version at about US $65,000.00 before it ceased production, putting these vehicles and others out of reach for most Canadians; 2. A current federal subsidy of $5,000.00 is woefully inadequate to compensate for the onerous exchange rate. 3. There are provincial subsidies in only 3 provinces (Quebec, Nova Scotia and British Columbia) of 10 provinces and 2territories. I happen to live in Ontario where the “Progressive” Conservative premier, Doug Ford, states erroneously that electric vehicles in general and Tesla in particular are for the rich, missing the point entirely. For true EV adoption, the federal government should promote a universal subsidy that promotes EVs in a more equitable way that reflects economic realities of exchange rates and EV costs; 4. In one memorable moment about a year ago I contacted Transport Canada (a tax payer funded federal agency responsible for vehicle safety) about the Tesla heat pump issue and it’s performance in cold Canadian winters. As I tax payer I was dismissed, ignored, stone walled and shunned. I had to contact my member of parliament to get any answers that should have been provided; If the current federal government wishes to implement this ambitious initiative, I think most Canadians would consider this pie-in-the-sky thinking that has little real world reality or chance of succeeding given the current thinking and inconsistencies in their approach. I shall be watching with interest…

Hello from Montreal, it will be a challenge. For example a lot of people live in rental apartments with no charging options and park their cars on the street. I don’t think the infrastructure will be ready to accommodate this in time or have landlords mandated to install charging stations.. Also the cost of these new vehicles compared to gas powered and folks who can’t afford a new car let alone how it’s powered. Regarding Canada and how we handled the Covid situation, you should not judge how the government handled it based on a small minority of truckers who protested in Ottawa. I’m not saying the government didn’t handle it properly but these protesters wanted to bully the government into their terms. I appreciate your channel and the need to promote alternatives. Take care and good health to you.

Also even I wanted a car or needed a car now which I do, it’s a 6 month wait. There not a car available for us Canadians. So I will not be buying an electric car until there affordable and choices are better. What the government should do is limit the number cars on the road.

The demand for EVs is there in Canada, the companies are not producing enough evidenced by people being on waiting lists to order and receive their cars. Even more people will be in the market when supply catches up to demand and the prices come down. I expect to be on my last gas powered vehicle, but would have gone electric or hybrid earlier if the availability and economics were there. Back in 2008, I was going to buy a Saturn VUE hybrid but didn't as there was a three month waiting list. There was no guarantee that it would actually be delivered on time, and I would have to pay $5K more for options I wanted compared to a comparable gas vehicle. Opted for the Hyundai Tucson, with best in class fuel mileage at a much lower price, that I could pick up in a week after purchase.

One thing everyone seems to be missing is that the ruling is for 20% of new vehicles sold... not all vehicles. Not really a huge deal for the grid... most cars on the road are 5+ yrs old... plenty of time to make adjustments.

I just checked and Tesla Model 3 std range in Ontario is $59990 CAD. For the cheapest model. A used chevy bolt Premier 2019 with 36K is still $41990 CAD. Way too expensive for me to justify getting one. And I want to make the switch.

That's 300,000-500,000 cars/year!!! Might even make some progress on Toronto's air quality problems.

I drove EV for last 1 year but switching back to a hybrid because of charging network in Canada. I tried so hard to help government in this initiative but we are not backed by the charging stations and availability of chargers. Also 1-2 hour charging wait times is a mind changer and deal breaker

I live in Saskatchewan. It has been -30 here for the past week up to Christmas. We have more than 220 000 km of roads in this province and the dc fast charging is all on along main highways. That’s not going to work for many many people out here in the west. Personally I only drive 10minutes to work one way and I want a Tesla myself but my brother in law drives 250km everyday. No ev can do 250km a day here when it’s -30 and below.

Are you sure? I live in Manitoba and I can drive 250km no problem in my M3

I can do 250 km no prob in my Hyundai. Charging at home is the best way when you own an EV. Highway charging is only when you're on holidays!

I am a Canadian and own an i4. In British Columbia EV sales are at 20% already. HOWEVER, our climate is mild. With range degredation in the cold I'm not sure EV's are practical in in climates that see minus 20 and minus 30 during the winter. The technology will have to improve before it is practical.

Canadian here. Love your videos. Politically the controlling Liberal party are on very safe ground because they have a coalition with the left leaning new Democratic Party. In fact, I suspect this incentive was created by the NDP. I also suspect that the target goals will not be reached. But it will definitely push Canada into embracing electric, and that will pay out in 20 years when Canada will be a world leader in electric cars and vehicles. My next new vehicle will be an EV.

Just as the stats are very different from state to state in the US, they are wildly different between the provinces in Canada. BC leads the way with Quebec a close second. After that it drops like a stone to Ontario then the rest. Of course, at the bottom of the list you will find big oil country (AB/SK). As far as charging infrastructure goes, Tesla Superchargers are all over the place and one can easily traverse the country in a Tesla. BC Hydro has done a commendable job dropping 50kw, and more recently 100kw, fast DC charging stations in the gaps. There are also quite a few L2 chargers scattered around from the other players and even Tesla Destination chargers at some nicer hotels, restaurants, etc.

I have seen several KZbin videos lately about how long it takes to charge an EV in cold weather. Plus you have to queue up to get to a charger, if it works. You can be waiting two hours to get your EV recharged. Plus the credit card bill for the charge can be rather high.

I’ve owned a Chevy Volt and now a Tesla Model Y, and it is true that on the rare time, for free charges you have to wait for a charger but since owning a Tesla, I’ve never had to wait for a charge and most ppl will use these chargers very rarely, for road trips. The main issue is that Tesla is the only company that have reliable charging infrastructure and the Canadian Government should either make this the standard for all vehicles or invest in a charging infrastructure massively before 2025. Otherwise this mandate makes no sense. To answer your questions, time of charge depends on a lot of factors, type of charger, (150kw, 250kw, etc), percentage of charge when you get to the charger, did you precondition the battery pack, are you at a charge that is sharing a stall, and what to what percentage are you charging your car to? I would say, currently in Ontario, majority of the Tesla chargers are 150kw, and if you are charging from 20%-80%, it will take approximately 30 minutes give or take. The cost is still way cheaper than getting gas.

I've owned an EV for 4 years (Hyundai) and never waited in line for a charge. And I don't even have access to the Tesla chargers. The infrastructure is there.

@@AceTCK Free chargers? All of the videos I have seen so far show a credit card payment required.
