I watched a video about checking metal dishes in thrift stores. A few weeks later I went to a thrift store for another reason, and while I was there I checked their dishes. I saw a goblet I thought was copper because it was so tarnished. I bought it for a dollar, and cleaned it. It was sterling silver plated with gold.

My boss asked if any of us wanted to clean the dryers.They hadn't been cleaned in years...No one wanted to deal with the dust so I volunteered.Boy was I glad! The most easily obtained source of silver if from electrical switches. Basically anything that has a switch will contain some silver. The older the switch the more silver content will be in it

@Tina Johnson. As far as I know silver plate is virtually worthless other than the metal content of whatever base metal it's made of, typically copper or nickel. Does it have any lettering like EPC or EPN? That would tell you it's nickel or copper core with the silver plating.

Depends on where. I lived accross the street from one and always cut through it to go to the stores on the other side. Probably 50% of the people would have been married and had wedding bands and engagement rings. Pretty much every woman has silver/gold necklaces and jewelry unless they are dirt poor. A lot of people just go there to wash their pet blankets and stuff or big blankets and comforters they can't wash at home and are quite well off.

I think it is sad to melt down or destroy nice items made of silver even if they have a ding or two. I hope somebody values them enough to purchase for their own sake. I drink water from a slightly battered child's christening cup which I keep in the fridge. As silver is supposed to be antibacterial I feel like an aristocratic blueblood when I do so.
