More Warbirds at • The Greatest Airmen! . On September 28~30, 2007, over eighty P-51 Mustangs and hundreds of WWII aviation Legends including Fighter Aces, Tuskegee Airmen and WASPs and thousands of spectators came together for the "Gathering of Mustangs and Legends" at Rickenbacker Airport in Columbus Ohio.
Many other aircraft attended this special one-time only event as well. You have to see and hear these planes in flight to appreciate the sights and deep harmonious sounds produced by 20 Rolls Royce Merlins powered Mustangs pass by!
In this segment, 20 Mustangs take off and form up to create a Giant "51" in the Saturday afternoon sky above Rickenbacker Airport. We normally go to the Reno Air Races, but this year headed to Ohio and I was glad we did.
This footage was shot using a tripod from a twelve foot high photographers platform. Mounted atop my brand new Sony V1u HD camera was a very sensitive directional microphone. The sound quality is simply the best! Enjoy!

Americans are so blessed to be able to still see the P-51 Mustangs fly over our skies. America had many amazing aircraft in World War II, but the Mustang seemed to get lots of love. My father, Fred Kiene, was an aircraft mechanic in World War II for the US Navy. Spent much of his time on the tiny island of Palmyra in the Central Pacific, 1200 miles south of Hawaii. He said they were patching up our aircraft that were headed north to Hawaii after fighting in the South Pacific theater.

My dad was at Normandy a couple of days after D-day. One of the last things he could talk about and remember (before Alzheimer's took over) was seeing so many planes in the sky that it looked like you could walk from wing tip to wing tip and never fall to the ground. One time I saw a B-17 and a B-19 flying to the Dayton Air Show and the noise was deafening. Sometimes I look up into the sky and wonder what a sky full of planes looked and sounded like.

First toy I’d buy if I ever won the lottery. I have some rental properties near an airport where there are 2 P51s. My helpers run outside when I tell them that a P51 is coming. 1 minute later , through the trees , there she is . I keep telling them that the engine has a distinct roar that goes right through you . I was remodeling a bath at the airport and the hanger owner called me outside . There was an F86 strapped down conducting a full power engine test . Very cool.

Always impressive to see so many Mustangs together. Even without any aerobatics, just the sound of all those Merlins in synchronus raises goosebumps. This is what it sounded like at untold numbers of airbases during WW2 and the early Korean War. Have loved Mustangs all my life since I was a small boy. Never had a chance to fly in one. This is the next best thing.
@partriarch
@partriarch 8 жыл бұрын
***** You missed my point. No aerobatics were used in this video, therefore I wrote, "Even without any aerobatics..." referring to this video alone. My enjoyment was not lessened by the fact it was plain formation flying. I have seen videos of P51's performing aerobatics "IN FORMATION". Just search here on KZbin for "The Four Horsemen". They are a group of Mustang pilots who do precisely that at airshows. The conclusion you jumped to was premature.
@partriarch

***** If that were so, then how could it have become the premier American escort fighter in the air wars against Germany's and Japan's best aircraft and pilots? I must confess I've never piloted an aircraft, and certainly not any of the fighters used in WW2, but it doesn't figure that one aircraft without aerobatic agility could defeat such formidable machines as the FW-190, the Bf-109, and the A6M5 Zeke. Pilot skill is a good cause but not compelling. The P39 Aircobra was a fast, sleek, heavily armed fighter, yet it was not a worthy opponent in a furball against Axis fighters. Same goes for the P40, which could hold it's own, but had no legs for distance, and was considered verging on obsolete before WW2 began.

***** I disagree. No other fighter other than the P-38 came even close to the range of a Merlin powered Mustang with fuel tanks. The German Luftwaffe had not been decimated over it's own airspace, which is why the daytime bomber casualty counts were so heavy once Allied fighters had to disengage due to lack of fuel. The Mustang met and thumped the Luftwaffe in it's own air turf, as well as the Zeros, Tonys, and other aircraft Japan flew to meet the B29 formations from Tinian.. As for the P-40, it WAS in service, in the air forces of other nations such as our allies, which is what resulted in the Mustang being designed in the first place, as an alternative to the P-40 for the British. Time to cut through the minutia and return to the original intent. My comment was written to show a deep personal appreciation for the aircraft which helped shut down the Axis over Germany as well as over Japan. If you want to go argue "apples and oranges" and talk about all sorts of other things, then go ahead. It does not change my view of the Merlin-powered P-51s. Find someone else to try and impress with your derisive remarks about a great aircraft. We are done here.

***** Thank you, Steve, for illustrating the point so well. I tired of John19501000's "...yes, but" seemingly never ending list of faults tacked to the Mustangs. If the Mustangs were so bad, then how in God's name did we ever whip the German and Japanese air forces? I will not respond to any more of his disparaging remarks.

soaringtractor P-51s protected the bombers but were banned from "targets of opportunity" such as strafing trains and airfields. One piece of shrapnel in the cooling system is all it took to bring a Mustang down and also insured that a surviving pilot completed his tour in a POW camp. So mostly the Mustangs fought off enemy fighters at altitude and allowed the bombers to do their job. P-47s were ground support because of the punishment it could take with its air-cooled radial. By '43, there was no stopping the Allies - Germany simply didn't have enough airpower to fight off the attacks. Our factories were turning out massive numbers of planes and Germany simply didn't have the resources or materials. Germans repainted their spinners and ID numbers daily so our recon would think that they had more planes than they did. We didn't have to worry about our factories getting bombed either.

***** That is nonsense. The Luftwaffe was still very much in the war in 1943, especially more than 100 miles from the coast. German fighters were causing up to 20% losses on daylight bombing raids.
@jonnybottle
@jonnybottle 9 жыл бұрын
soaringtractor What the Mustang also did was save the USAAF's face. They had ignored British advice about unescorted daylight bombing and got a very rude awakening (e.g. 60 B-17s lost over Schweinfurt for a dubious outcome). After the Mustang and its Rolls-Royce Merlin arrived, the role of the B-17s and B-24s was more or less that of bait to get the German fighters up so the Mustangs could destroy them.

Man, there's some flag waving venom going on here! Packard was chosen as the ideal partner for RollsRoyce on account of their experience with the V12 Liberty engine of WW1 and their superb V12 marine racing engines of the 20's and 30's. The other American companies said the Merlin couldn't be mass-produced. Rolls Royce never in their history ever mass - produced anything and by absorbing Packard's technology, they got the price of a Merlin down from 2760 pounds in '39 to 1100 pounds by '45. The co-operation between the two companies was total, mainly because the Engineers were able to talk to each other directly by telephone, without going through company managements. The Merlin can truly be called the engine that saved civilisation. Without it the Brits would have lost the Battle of Britain. The Germans would then have successfully invaded the UK, and any attempt at a later D-Day type operation to liberate Europe, from right across the Atlantic, would have been impossible. This made the Battle of Britain the single most crucial battle of WW2, in Europe. The whole of subsequent world history would have been very different.

EscapeforMankind Sadly, those crashing Mustangs included most of the best - the P-51H model. The P-51 was not properly redesigned for the Merlin installation due to wartime needs. The P-51H did not see combat in WWII and the production orders were sharply reduced. Almost all of the P-51H models were used up by the Air National Guard.

Tin Erceg Except even the early Spitfires could outmaneuver the late P51s. The P51 never got into its stride until it adopted the Merlin engine, and even then, as Packard couldn't build the Merlins right, they never has as much power as the Spitfire. Higher top speed, thanks to more advanced aerodynamics (the Spitfire was designed in the early 1930s) but the 'Spit could climb and accelerate better. And turn better... And in a dog fight, turning is key, because if your enemy can turn harder than you, he can shoot you. Besides, even the FW190 was superior in many ways.
@0909BlacKMan
@0909BlacKMan 9 жыл бұрын
Agreed, if they gave the Spitfire the long range fighting ability, it would suffer from lower turn time, maneuverability and climb rate, whereas the Mustang excelled in all of that while being able to reach much further and fight higher than the Spitfire, enabling him to defend the increasingly important bombers on their missions.

Strange as it may seem early Spitfire Mk XI`s were converted from Mk IX production and some of them called PR XI, EN 656 which went to Greece was a converted Mk IX, I am not sure about EN 409 in which Tobin reached mach 0.891 with no damage at all, and later Martindale reached mach 0.92 in the same plane. The USAAF in their high speed dives with a P 51 could barely exceed mach 0.8
@wingmanjim6
@wingmanjim6 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry, your perspective is a bit slanted. If you refer to the "inferior" Allison supercharger, it was a case of the Allisons having only a single stage supercharger. Not a supercharger deficiency, rather a deficiency caused by the USAAFs early belief that turbos would be used, but did not come to fruition on fighter a/c other than the P38. Early Merlins were also single stage only, and also later Allisons were indeed two stage and offered comparable performance to the Merlin in every respect. At that point, there was no need to try and adapt the two stage Allison for the Mustang or other designs. Remember also that the majority of sorties were in fact NOT flown at altitudes requiring the two stage supercharger. While necessary for high altitude escort duty, the two speed was superfluous for most other missions. As great as the Merlin admittedly was, the Allison is a far more maintainable engine, many fewer parts, few exterior oil lines, better cam/valve gear, better rods,FAR lower parts count, far fewer different fasteners etc, and much easier work on as well. Generally a longer time between overhauls than the Merlin, although under war conditions this is a highly variable statistic.
