Shakey's was the first and most important pizza place of my life. After doing local musical theater productions the casts would go there for our cast parties, And we would play their piano and sing every song from whichever show we were doing. Great fun and people who didn't want to sit through a stage play would come in to hear the music.

One of the best places for pizza in the 70/80s, in Colorado at least, was The Organ Grinder. Silent movies with a massive organ playing the music, video games, pizza, and monkeys that would run to your table for a tip. Was amazing.

The intro for Gino’s Pizza was actually from the unrelated Gino’s (a fast food restaurant chain in the Baltimore area), of which former Baltimore Colts player Gino Marchetti was a part owner.

Alan "the Iron Horse" Ameche, who might have gotten into the Hall of Fame had his short five year career not ended in the early 1960s due to injury, and former Colt Joe Campanella, not the actor, were also owners. Alan Ameche also started the popular Ameche's drive-ins and sold his delicious special sauce in local grocery stores said to be the same sauce on the Giant. Gino's was better than McDonalds and The Giant better than the copycat Big Mac.

@@295g295 , yes Gino's Hamburgers had the marketing rights to KFC from VA to NJ. When they expanded to So Calif. and New England they sold Gino's Golden Fried Chicken. AFAIK they never sold pizza.

Round Table Pizza used to be my favorite back in the day. It always came out fresh, crispy and melty with great tasting ingredients. I know the chain still exists today, but nowadays, it tastes like frozen pizza. It is no longer, as the commercials used to say, "one of the last honest pizzas."

The Pizza Inn one has a commercial for Pizza Hut. Oops! You might want to fix that. We still go to Pizza Inn all the time. Unfortunately, there is only one left in Houston. Oddly, there are more in Carlsbad, NM, (2) than there are in Houston. And we went to both in Carlsbad while visiting the caverns a few years back.

Godfathers Pizza was my go-to pizza in the day! So many toppings, and variety kept me a loyal customer for years. Then one day, it was gone. Dominoes and Papa John's just weren't the same. Now I just home bake my own pizza's and long for the memories of the Don! Amazing how many of these franchises when sold, went out of business. Corporate greed could be the reason. After all, once a business sells ownership, the love and caring goes away. Thats just my theory.

Pistol Pete's was awesome. I had a few birthday parties there, it was the place to have soccer and baseball parties. They had a great lunch buffet. Their pizza was really good, the crust was my favorite!!!!

My two favorite pizza places were "Me & Ed's" in Long Beach, CA, and B.J. Grunts in Newport Beach, CA and Costa Mesa, CA. Me & Ed's had a gal sitting on a keg(with pillow to protect her) playing the piano and a guy playing banjo. I was a singalong parlor with the music at every table.

There is a Sam's Pizza Palace on the Wildwood, NJ Boardwalk but it's not the Wausau chain, rather one of a kind. It was founded in 1957. The Midwestern chain started in 1958.

I'm from New Haven, Connecticut. We NEVER had such disgusting excuses for pizza. Just about the only chain was Pizza Hut. And they were out in the boondocks. None of the others came near. To this day, all of the iconic pizza restaurants are still here, complete with coal fired ovens.

Quite a few of these chains "that no longer exist" still exist. Shakey's, Round Table, Straw Hat, Godfathers, and Pizza Inn, just to name a few. While the numbers of restaurants and the prominence of these chains has diminished, they do still exist. Sadly, Shakey's, for example, only has 47 remaining restaurants, and of those, all but three are in Southern California. A quick web search will show the current locations of the restaurants of many of these chains.
