And anyway, the insides of a sandwich are visible from all sides, and the sauce is in contact with the bread. In a hotdog, the meat is only visible from three sides, and the sauce goes on the top of the meat and is exposed to the air. It does not touch the roll at all.

I countered with, "How much more do I need to pay to make sure that NEVER happens?" I'm dead serious.

As someone with an English degree, Bernadette has now convinced me that a hotdog is not a sandwich lol When we were studying literary theory in college, we went over the idea that there is no perfect definition of anything, every description and name for anything is simply a categorization, and furthermore, just because we have named a thing does not mean that we have created or "discovered" it (which is beside the point, really). For example, my mental image of a cat does not directly match your mental image of a cat, and yet, due to the categorization of language, we both know what a cat is and could identify it if it were presented in any given environment. This brings me to my final point: if you asked me to bring you a sandwich from a shop that sells both sandwiches and hotdogs, I would not, under any circumstances, think you wanted me to bring you a hotdog. So they are not the same.
@Aegopodium4 жыл бұрын
Talking animal kingdom: the species is sandwich, the breed is hotdog. Or hamburger for that matter. Still, I won't expect to get a hotdog when ordering a sandwich.... It's just a question of definition. A square is a rectangle (yet not the other way round)....which makes me wonder why there is just one word for all triangles.... And thus, dear costubers, folk like us are considered weird. Or odd. ;)
@mirjanbouma4 жыл бұрын
That final point is an excellent summarised argument. A hotdog is not a sandwich.

Bernadette has actually changed my mind. I actually think a hot dog is NOT a type of sandwich. If we were to "cross-breed" a hot dog with a typical sandwich, if hot dogs ARE sandwiches then we should end up with something that is also a sandwich. However when we actually DO cross a hot dog with a sandwich, we get what Australians refer to as a "sausage sizzle" or "sausage in bread" which is a sausage in one slice of folded bread. And that is definitely NOT a sandwich.

I don't know about the definition of a sandwich, but the rectangle-square argument is bound by mathematical definitions. A polygon is a closed shape with a positive integer number of straight sides and vertices, where the sides do not intersect except at the vertices. A quadrilateral is a type of polygon -- one with four sides. A parallelogram is a type of quadrilateral -- one where the two pairs of sides are parallel. A rectangle is a type of parallelogram -- one where all the angles at the vertices are 90 degrees. A square is a type of rectangle -- one where all the sides are the same length. Therefore, a square is a rectangle, a parallelogram, a quadrilateral, and a polygon (as well as a rhombus, and probably lots of other things that haven't occurred to me). It all depends on which level of specificity you are looking for.

Personally I hated Wuthering Heights so much, I was about to sacrifice 10% of my english grade that year, in order to avoid reading it. My Mother, knowing how much my grades meant to me, asked me if I would please allow her to read it to me, so that I could get through it. The only thing that kept us going was our running harangue of the characters. By the end, Mom, who's taste in books is far closer to this than mine, hated the book so much she was threatening to smother the thing in peanut butter and give it to our dog, so we could at least derive joy from watching her tear it apart. EDIT: You've got me curious, and the local library does have The Miniaturist, so I've requested it. EDIT2: The Dog Dies warning. Possible spoilers: Violent death. It gets brought up repeatedly for at least 3 chapters. And there’s at least one other mention of pet death, and a missing pet prior to that. I’m out.

@@notavailable5911 Ha ha to The Secret Garden. So, I voluntarily chose to read it in grade 5. Teacher took note. Then, when they opted to try a thing where they got copies of Treasure Island in a variety of reading levels, and assigned them to as fit where we were at. Of COURSE I get the unabridged version. Which, fair, I made it through the unabridged version of The Secret Garden just fine... This was my first encounter with the realization my reading level is highly dependent of whether I like what I'm reading. And I hated Treasure Island. It was written as serials - which explains why the unabridged is so needlessly drawn out and wordy. I got through it own my own, but mostly because I was grateful I wasn't being forced to work at a slower pace, and stoop to the level of people with mediocre reading abilities. Vanity enabling persistence? I've had a ridiculous time trying to think of fiction I really enjoyed. Terry Pratchett's Mort, and Making Money, or Going Postal (those 2 have very similar plots). I find a lot of Pratchett I have trouble getting into it for the first few chapters, but I adore the way he looks at the world. Pratchett and Gaiman, Good Omens Rutherford, London. It's historical fiction taking you through Bronze Age to post WWII. But, I warn there is a "the dog dies" during the great plague. And Rutherford has a reoccurring habit of using a "nameless stupid obese woman" trope. It's a massive book though, so those sins are minor compared to page count. The Woman Who Smashed Codes, Jason Fagone is a biography, but it's a very good one. I'm really better for recommending non-fiction. :)

I will only agree with hot dogs being sandwiches if they are split, fried and put on a slice of loaf bread: toppings optional

So... an Aussie sausage sizzle- is that a sandwich? It uses proper sausages, not frankfurters. It uses only one slice of bread, but it is folded over, with the sausage at the bottom. I tend to say no, it is not a sandwich. But this is also Australia’s most beloved charity snack. Often sold in the carpark of Bunnings (large home stuff retire, like Home Depot) by charities on Sundays. Also sold by schools on voting days, and referred to as the democracy sausage, on those occasions. But I call it a sausage sizzle. There is debate over whether the “sausage sizzle” refers only to the mass cooking of the sausages, and not the final result, which some call a snag sanga. (Translated- sausage sandwich). This debate has not yet been settled in Australian culture. One thing all Aussies are clear on though- a sausage sizzle (or snag sanga) is NEVER a hot dog. Never. Hot dogs are made using bread rolls, and often with frankfurters, not proper sausages. A sausage sizzle is not a hot dog.

@@katherinemorelle7115 according to CNN Travel it is... However, given the fact that I've never partaken in this apparently wonderful Australian tradition. My thinking leans towards no, primarily due to it not meeting the Merriam-Webster definition of a sandwich "two or more slices of bread or a split roll having a filling in between. Or one slice of bread covered with food" But whether it is or isn't it looks very yummy and that is all that truly counts in my book.

Yay! Been waiting for this one because I knew there would such hilarious answers....opening with omelets didn't disappoint. I found the most glorious handmade insertion lace from circa 1897, here in Norway, according to the woman whose grandmother made it and when I saw it I feel like it belongs in Bernadette's hands. I've never wanted to gift something to someone I've never met more in my life.

I have a pair of ladies shoes from circa 1800. I keep them in my closet in a vacuum sealed box to preserve the silk. I know that as much as I love them, there will be someone out there who will appreciate them more. There is a more deserving owner for these that I have yet to meet.

I have a palm size hinged metal box filled with silk darning thread on tiny spools whose purpose was to mend silk stockings of the late 1930s. My compulsion to buy only this at her estate sale still befuddles me fifteen years later. After reading your comments, I feel compelled to include a handwritten note for whomever finds it among my possessions at my future estate sale....sigh.

@@dcinrb8538 I’ve been tempted to sell or give my shoes to another collector. My collection has dwindled since a lot of it was lost in a move four years ago. The shoes now seem lonely and my kids won’t know what to do with my stuff when I’m gone.
