Question Time Stamps for Quick Reference: 0:00 - Introduction 1. 0:31 {Were Jesus’ Disciples Married?} Were Christ’s disciples married / did they have families? I believe there is a reference to Peter’s in-law, but I find it to be an interesting question. What would it be like for them? How would that fit with what the Lord tells us about the role of a husband/father? The love for God trumps all, so did that override their responsibilities as a husband/father? 2. 9:55 {Should We Give to Beggars?} I've had multiple encounters where people directly approach me and my wife on the street or at a gas station asking for money, food, or a ride. I know most people would say don't give anything because you're feeding their bad habit, and I know there is also the risk that if you do help/give, they may try to push for even more favors. But it's obvious that Jesus was compassionate toward beggars. What are some biblical principles for this in today's age? 3. 15:37 {What is a Miracle?} What is a miracle? If it can be explained, is it still a miracle? 4. 20:54 {Should we be Worried about Gov’t Control?} Should Christians be worried about government control? I have friends not getting the Covid vaccine because "it's a way to be controlled by the government.” I want to think biblically about this. 5. 26:09 {About Walking by the Spirit} Does living in the Spirit mean fighting the flesh? How do you fight something that is already dead? 6. 32:04 {About “Perfect Love Casting Out Fear”} What did John mean in 1 John by “perfect love casts out fear, and that whoever fears has not been made perfect…”? 7. 34:43 {About Paul and a Time Gap in Scripture} Why didn’t Luke mention the time gap that took place during Acts 9: 20-26, that Paul mentioned in Galatians 1: 17-18? 8. 40:20 {Prayer to Help with Deep Depression} Can you pray for me? I’ve battled depression my whole life, and the past 2 weeks I’ve gotten so low I need some prayer if you have the time. 9. 43:13 {Why did Jesus need to be Led by the Spirit?} Why did Jesus (God) need to be filled, led, or anointed by the Spirit? Troubled by some saying that Jesus did everything as a man through the Spirit, so we should be able to do everything Jesus did. 10. 48:10 {Forming a Healthy Work/Rest Balance} Since life is finite and Heaven is infinite, how do we justify spending any time not working to influence eternity? Where is the balance between relaxation & work? (Ephesians 5: 15-16 vs. 1 Thessalonians 4: 11) 11. 53:10 {Refuting Catholic “Queenship” of Mary} How would you answer a Catholic who uses Revelation 12 to argue Mary's queenship? 12. 59:06 {Can we be Confident in God’s Existence?} How can one ever be sure that the arguments for God’s existence are truly sound? Is it because all current objections fail? Maybe there is an Achilles heel that has not come up yet. 13. 1:02:44 {What is Prevenient Grace?} I just heard about prevenient grace. I have looked it up and it just don't understand it. Can you explain it? 14. 1:05:48 {Finding Hope in Difficult Situations} How do you interpret the hopelessness of Psalm 88? How can you comfort someone who feels what Psalm 88:18b (NIV) implies? 15. 1:16:27 {Is Receiving Mental Health Therapy Biblical?} Is it a sin for Christians to see a mental health therapist/psychiatrist? Is biblical counseling the only option for Christians? 16. 1:18:54 {Can we Know 100% our Faith is True?} Is it possible to be 100% certain of Christianity and the Bible? Is believing but also having doubt a sin? I would like to have 100% certainty, but there's always a doubt that it all could be a lie. 17. 1:22:59 {How to Respond to Verbal Abuse in Marriage} My husband yells & curses at me. I always tell him I don’t deserve it, but he continues. Can this be corrected? If so, how? And would I dishonor God if I stop being physically intimate with him? 18. 1:27:02 {Is God Actively Judging Today?} Is God actively judging the world today or is all judgment held out ‘till the second coming? When negative things happen like natural disasters, how much of this can we say is God’s judgment? 19. 1:29:59 {Hidden Meaning in the Book of Ruth?} Is there any hidden meaning behind Ruth uncovering Boaz's feet in Scripture? 20. 1:31:33 {How to Stay Close to God When We’re Slipping} How do I get better in my relationship with God? I'm slipping away, what do I do?

But I couldn’t find a prayer request at the Calvary chapel in California. So I hope you don’t mind me putting a prayer request here with you? We live in an area where we get asked for money all the time, usually with some story attached or an explanation of how they will use it. I NEVER give cash but I ALWAYS offer to buy the thing they say they need. If they say they need cash for food, gas, bus ticket, then I offer to get it. Unfortunately 90% of the time they decline the offer because they really just want cash for drugs/alcohol. We have found this method to be extremely helpful in deciding who to help and who not to "help" and is a springboard into an opportunity to share the gospel.

The really sad part is those that just want cash for drugs are often the ones most desperately in need of help; unfortunately so few are willing or even capable of asking for or accepting REAL help, and most of the time it's not offered anyways. The best thing anyone can do for these folks is show them love, kindness, and compassion. The ones who just want their drug money are often using drugs to cope with a whole world of pain they have no idea how to deal with, then people come along and say hateful, ignorant things like "just stop". The only thing that can truly heal is Jesus Christ, and I'm pretty sure he'd be disappointed in the way some people that call themselves Christians treat these lost, broken, homeless, desperate people who are also made in the image of God. Next time you're walking or driving by some homeless person, instead of thinking of how much better you are because you have a home, try saying a prayer for them with love and compassion in your heart rather than pride and judgement... Just a thought PS - I'm not saying YOU personally.

@@jordazmo19 yea Christians definitely should not be the ones mistreating those people and you can treat them with kindness and still refuse to give them money. We have lots of people on drugs roaming the streets where we live and unfortunately there is no way to help them when they are impaired, we have found that many, when they come down from their high, truely do not want help either. Regardless of where theyre at, they should be treated as image bearers worthy of dignity, but I think great wisdom is needed in how to "help" and some end up only enabling, which isnt loving either. Our church goes above and beyond to try and help people in these situqtions and it is really hard work, with very few success stories, but def worth the effort.

@@zacharymulford4172 often times giving them money is actually harmful. Everybody's different, and every situation is different, but I've found that often addicts are most willing to listen, receive help, etc when they ARE on their drug, because most of the time it's basically become their "medication" and they are closer to "normal" when they're high, and when they've come down all their brain is capable of thinking about is getting high. It truly is horrible what drugs do to people; it reminds me that we get the word "pharmaceutical" from the Hebrew pharmakeia, which means sorcery.

I do believe in miracles. I have cerebral palsy. I do not feel pain on the left side of my body. I prayed to God for years to have feelings on the left side. Kathy, from question 17, I can’t find your original comment so this is just going out to the general comments. The likelihood of you seeing it is slim to none, but I’ll try anyways...I am SO SO sorry for your predicament. I feel so awful for you...I used to be that exact kind of husband to my own wife...to my everlasting shame. God has worked a sanctifying Grace and salvation in my life that has changed me completely. My wife has noticed it and commented on it several times. Please don’t stop praying for your husband. Like Pastor Mike said, give him as much grace as you can. We don’t know if what you’re saying is true, yet as an unemployed 34 year old living at home, you would condemn this gal? You’re doing the exact same thing you are condemning her for. Sure, she could be lying or misrepresenting the whole story…or maybe she’s telling the truth and looking for a Godly way to deal with a very difficult situation. Put down your stone for just a moment and pull that massive plank out of your eye first. Honestly I am praying for you. Your relationship with your father is clearly shaping your worldview. You seem very hostile and bitter. Mikes advice is NOT unbiblical and married people seeking help is not unbiblical. Please get yourself some real, Christian help. To Helen (or anyone else suffering from depression or mental illness): I fully understand you predicament. I don't know what it is like for you, but I will say for me I have recently been realizing, that what I do with the less depressed or "manic" phases, however brief they are, can greatly impact the duration and severity of the depressive phases. Lately I have been trying very hard to train my mind during the times when it is clear so I can create patterns that will become instinctual when it is not. It does seem to be helping, even though it doesn't erase the depression, it is starting to help me overcome it or at least not feel so much like I'm completely drowning in it. What I do is this: 1) Every little thing that bothers me, I pray. Even if it seems silly or stupid, or like something I shouldn't bother God with. It is easier said than done- very easy to forget, but I am finding that it is becoming a quicker response for me than it used to be. God is pleased whenever we pray, he wants us to cast our cares on him even if they are "little" in the grand scheme of things. 2) every little thing that makes me happy I try to praise, make up a stupid little song, literally dance even though it looks ridiculous, anything at all to praise God for the good things he brings to my life (as little as seeing my kids playing nicely together or seeing scenery I like when we go on our walk). I know it feels stupid, but do it anyway, it won't feel stupid forever. 3) When my mind is clear I read as much of my Bible as I can (I know time can be an issue, I have two toddlers so believe me when I say little snippets), because I know that in the depressive phase I have a harder time making it a priority and so the only way to prepare myself for that is do the reading ahead of time. 4) during the depressive stage (this is aided by the habit of praying as often as you can remember) absolutely lay your spirit before God and BEG for his help. He may not choose to end it immediately, or he may, but it brings him so much glory to admit to him that we are utterly incapable of doing things "on our own". Admitting the pridefulness of trying to fix it ourselves, and giving the full credit to him what you are brought back up IS the worship he deserves. The best thing you can possibly do is just fall on your face before God and acknowledge how powerful, and holy, and marvelous he is, and realizing how small we are before him, how unable we are without him to even continue breathing. This is what I've been trying to focus on recently, over the past year. I can't say for sure, but I think I am noticing a difference from the way I was before, and my husband says he notices a difference, too.

My question about government authority is a long one. I was basically told the other day a similar answer you (Mike) gave at the end of question 4 that they had less political freedom and that wasn't their focus so we shouldn't focus on it. I understand and FULLY agree that it is our responsibility to spread the gospel truth first and foremost, no disagreement there. However, I'm thinking all through the Bible there were times (especially in the OT - think Moses and Pharaoh) were there were political disagreements, etc. You also see it in all the times when Jesus himself went against Jewish instructions or laws (this seems like it would be at least the equivalent of local governments). My thought is that I was put here on earth, in America, at this time and so it is a blessing from God and one that I shouldn't just ignore and let slip away. For instance we are seeing the "writing on the wall" so to speak of where are freedom of speech will be taken away from us and it will be illegal to say certain things from the pulpit or social media or anywhere. Isn't it our responsibility to protect or vote for those who will protect those rights that God gave us (by the sheer fact of my being born in this country at this time or for others that they have been able to emigrate here) rather than saying oh, the NT doesn't speak of the apostles being political so it isn't my responsibility unless that right is taken away and then I have to be in direct disobedience of the law so as to speak the gospel truth. Hopefully you get what I'm saying but I really feel strongly that we shouldn't just passively sit by while our blessings are taken away from us so that we can then say well now I have to break the law. I just feel that the Lord would rather we try to keep what we have so that we won't have to break the law.

I am more inclined to believe that water separating to reveal dry ground is more of a miracle than a naturally occurring phenomenon, but we’re still discovering things about the natural world, so that might change. I remember hearing that in the Levant and the Persian Gulf, there are rocks that naturally contain water. But there is no way an ancient Hebrew would know about such a thing. So when God told Moses to strike a rock to get water for the Israelites, it would have seemed like a miracle to them at the time.

The constitution is our governing authority actually, not an elected official. Note that they have to swear to defend and uphold the constitution of the US. Paul himself appealed to his higher civil authority-his rights as a Roman Citizen. When he was arrested illegally and the magistrate tried to release him quietly in the night, Paul demanded that the authorities come get him and admit their mistake publicly in daylight. That is not the image of a doormat. We have the right under our constitution to protest the government. Just as Paul had the right as a Roman citizen to not be thrown into prison unfairly. I’m getting tired of the blanket ‘obey the government’ stuff. The ‘law of the land’ is the constitution. And we need to be reading it.

Deliverance comes from Jesus, not a church group. Start learning scriptures to recite aloud because Ephesians 6 says the word of God is our weapon to use against the demonic. Call on Jesus and ask him for help and pick up your weapon and fight using the word of God and according to the word if you resist the devil he will flee from you. I do understand why some seek deliverance churches, but it's God's word that sets you free through the blood of Jesus. We need to always be students of the scriptures so we won't become deceived or open for demonic oppression like depression and confusion. Nothing will prevent a spiritual attack, but the attacker WILL flee once you begin to pick up your sword!

Regarding the question on resisting government control. I think this is a tough one because it was Christian belief and values that birthed this country: only through a belief in a Creator could we endow people with the dignity of agency and individual rights. The attack on individual rights IS an attack on the Christian ideas that birthed this nation. Does this mean that these attacks are something a Christian should resist *today*, especially when considering our nation has almost completely rejected God anyway? Definitely a dilemma.

Proverbs 31 4-7: It is not for kings, Lemuel- it is not for kings to drink wine, not for rulers to crave beer, 5 lest they drink and forget what has been decreed, and deprive all the oppressed of their rights. 6 Let beer be for those who are perishing, wine for those who are in anguish! 7 Let them drink and forget their poverty and remember their misery no more. If I see a homeless person at a gas station, whether they ask for money or not, I always buy them a single cigar and a beer if I can afford it at the time. According to Proverbs, these are the only people who are even permitted to drink. This may be controversial but I just cannot understand why I, the holier-than-though stranger, am saving them from themselves because I think I know better when Proverbs 31 8-9 immediately states afterwards: Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. 9 Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. So not only am I biblically obligated to give to the poor, the poor have rights according to Proverbs to drink. And not only am I to allow them within my spirit do do this, I am also commanded to publicly defend their right to do so. I agree with Paul that wisdom is key when it comes to the church as an institution to decide wisely who gets supported by the church, but ME, an individual, giving a dollar to someone who asks is a completely different story. I always pray that God brings someone to intervene in their life because I, a stranger with a full time job and two kids, am unable to invest at the level that they need. But you know what I can do? Buy them a dang beer and let them know that Jesus loves them exactly where they are.

I have one thing to add about the first question about family for the apostles. Just because only Simon and Andrew and John and James are mentioned as brothers in their families does not mean that they are the only male children in their families. The fishing business was a family business and the purpose of extended families is to take care of members of those families. The wives of the apostles would have continued on normal just like when John Adams spent all his time in Philadelphia Abigail Adams stayed home and ran the farm and the family. It is also conceivable that during those years with Jesus and they were traveling about and going home that the apostles also did some work for the family. Also children being raised by their fathers was very important and I am confident that the apostles spent some time teaching their children what they were learning from Jesus.

If that is so, do we know, or can we at least guess, what the disciples thought of Jesus’s status as a holy single pringle? When the disciples were poking fun at the idea of singlehood, were they passive aggressively telling Jesus that he should consider getting married? Or did the disciples just assume He hadn’t met the right woman yet? Did they think Jesus was waiting to be coronated King before choosing a queen? Or did the disciples think He was some sort of honorable and unique case? Thanks to anyone who may answer!

Abuse kills intimacy. I’m surprised he counseled that woman to continue in intimacy with an abusive husband!! And said if she didn’t, she would exacerbate the problem??!! That puts the burden of his behavior on HER instead of him. He needs correction, counseling, and discipleship. Abusing relationships get worse unless the problem is admitted by the offender, and help is sought out. It’s heartbreaking, and further abuse, for the burden of a husband’s behavior to put on his wife.

God loves a cheerful giver.....Of course if you boldly see them buy drugs with what you have given them, then that is not wise. But remember you are called to give not police your giving. IF you believe that God will provide no matter what. Then you do not think about what you have given away. Money, talent, time or anything.

You should believe what you have the best reasons to believe. There are also many things you have reasons to believe which you have no good reason to disbelieve, so believe them.

#14 on Psalm 88 The Psalms are, among other things, a toolbox for expressing our heart to God. So, there is a Psalm for this kind of moment, as well as for the more hopeful. When the Psalmist asks about the dead, the point is not so much about the ultimate state as it is saying, "Look, I won't be able to worship you and glorify you in the world if you kill me." It is similar to Moses's reasoning when He is explaining why God will keep from wiping out Israel, even though they deserved it. The whole point of Israel was for God to display His glory and be made known among the nations, and Him taking them out into the desert and nuking them would do the opposite. So Moses pleads with God to have mercy on Israel for His own name's sake. These verses are making a similar plea. There is also, in the Old Testament, this spirit of the honest heart-cry. Prophets and psalmists *know* that God is all-good and all-wise, but they are bold and honest enough with the Lord to say, "This is what I *feel* , even though I know better. Lord, help me through it." It is like the prophet Habakkuk who looked out over the terrible state of God's people, and knowing that painful judgement would come via an even more evil people, essentially says, "How can you let things be like this?! It doesn't seem right!" and then says that he will go and watch, and see how the LORD was going to prove him wrong! To me, this is the strongest kind of faith. The kind that can tell God exactly how confused/upset/hopeless we *feel* in our walk, yet still *know* that He is Who He Is and trust Him like a distraught child throwing themselves into their Father's arms even when nothing makes sense. Because anyone who thinks that being a Christian means that life will allways make sense has a lot of uncomfortable growing to do. Psalm 88 is for such times.

I think this right here is Case in point of why people need to become intimately aware of the Bible and the culture of the times that they are talking about. Many times people who joined the church can get this picture that the Bible is about the church and they impose churchanese on the people in it; what I mean by that is they start to impose the culture of their Church on the people that created it in the first place they seem to forget that the Bible is about real people in a real time dealing with the real world who were found by the Lord and were changed by him. God doesn't assume that he is taking a bunch of marble slabs with nothing to work with and then writing on them he is aware of that we are people with our own personalities and our own desires and our own will and he is working with us individually for his purpose it was the same for the apostles they have wives and wives and jobs and things before Jesus came and they (Jesus and the apostles and their families) worked with all of that.

#4. What is your answer here dealt with being more concerned about promoting the gospel than what the government does. This dives into conversations I have with many believers who want to focus more of their attention on “making Republicans“ than making disciples of Jesus Christ. You may have already dealt with this and if so can you share that resource with me or you may have other resources that would be helpful. But if you haven’t done a talk on this topic it would be wonderful to hear your perspective. Love you brother

Christians need to be more involved in politics and stop acting like God isn’t a part of that. God is a part of every single aspect of our lives. There is no heavenly separation of church and state because Christians are not just in churches, they are in every aspect of life and our beliefs should be too. We should be involved in politics just like we should be involved in everything else in life because none of it is separate from Him, our testimonies, or our walks with God. The reason the country is in such a poor shape is because Christians refused to do anything about it and let the world sway how we vote and act and what we stand for in politics instead of God.

I've found work-life and rest to be terribly imbalanced. Either I am not doing enough and didn't work much because of college and family, or I work too much and my wife/kids get angry I am not home enough.
