Myself and a coworker left our previous employer and opened our own HVAC company January 5th. 1st month we broke even maybe a slight loss ( not bad considering buying a truck, stock etc). 2nd month which isn’t even over we turned a profit. Thanks for the videos and guidance. I truly admire and agree with most of what you say. It is so rare to find someone with a passion for their profession. In our field maybe 1/10 can survive. I just wanted to say thanks for putting things into perspective. I always knew my attitude and drive ways way beyond others. I just never knew how to put it into words. You do it perfectly. I love watching this guy. My main take from this video, and I hate to say it, is that I personally lowered my standards without realizing it. Some how I asked myself, "what has been going on in the last few months that I am not happy with myself." Then as I was watching this video it hit me, he said, "did you lower your standards or are you maintaining your standards." Wow, that was it. I had not been maintaining my standards and it just creeped up on me without me paying attention. For me, I need to maintain my standards in order for me to be happy, from friends, family, food, clothes, personal things etc. I failed to maintain my world as I needed it to be to make me happy. I know this might sound messed up to say the least but at the end of the day we need to be personally happy in order to feel good and be happy for others. Take care of yourself first in order to be able to take care of others later. I am not materialistic but the little things in life sometimes make me happier than the big things.

Love these videos! I went through all this in my last job they didn't care about us the employees. They would threaten us to not pay us . Always demand more with nothing in return. Its sad how some employers are taking advantage of this pandemic to over work people because some are afraid they won't be able to find other work. I quit at the end of the day because i wasn't paid even though i worked. I would work everyday from 3AM to 2PM but it was never enough they would try to force me to work longer and heavier days. I'm currently a student and when I would mention that i have to be in school they would say "This is a business you need to be here first before anything else". They would steal money from other employees the boss and management would lie to us to make us work more. The whole business was never truthful from the start. But watching this reminds me that sometimes its not our fault we fall into habits and get comfortable over time. Like you said the people at the top are already full so they don't share that vision with the people in the bottom so for us it feels like there's no reason to be there especially if you feel like you cant grow.

My first job was at Wal-Mart and they failed at all of these, they blamed high turnover solely on the employees. I hit the ground as a cashier and pushed hard and got to learn how to run the front end within a month, but they never gave me the promotion after half a year. They had people that wanted to run a store and climb and profit but they use them for cheaper labor for quick gains at the cost of long term growth. I did my bosses job as they sat in the office. My bosses boss wouldn't even respond to me being friendly as we walked past each other on several occasions. It made me never want to work for another persons gain ever again for a period of time. It made me value my own time and see through deception.

Great video with some good points Pat. At the end of the day, it boils down to just ONE point. Everyone is looking out for opportunities that support their own values. When they get a job, they are asking themselves “what is in this deal for me?” If you employ people on values, you will have the most successful business. Most people get a job for money. If you as an employer take the time to find out what the people value most, and then create a role for them and help them understand how helping you achieve your goals will simultaneously hel;p them enhance and fulfil their highest values, they will continue to work for you for the love of the job instead of money. We employ every member of our team on values.

Lack of Character. I got the job with the title with the promise of being trained for the title (I applied for a different job but they offered me a new career path) only to later be told they were just desperate to fill the chair and never planned on training me. I still ended up being consistently in the top tier of productivity. The thanks I got was a restructuring of titles so now I am a lower tier than I was hired and promised training for. I got proof from them though that I was not demoted. Little did they realize that as long as you're not demoted, it's perfectly acceptable to use the higher title on your resume. I have worked my arse off and now using my title to go up the career ladder somewhere else for more money.

Years ago I was complaining that I was paid $15/h. One person told me:"This is how much you worth for your employer. Go somewhere else, where you worth more". And I did it. Now, if I do not get a raise after a year, year and a half, I am leaving. For a better pay of course. You want me, show me the money. If not, have a nice life. I had employers that asked me why am I leaving. I show them the other company offer. "I can exceed their offer". Usually I answered: "It was wonderful working for your company, but is time for me to move on. Thank you very much".

I pay attention to how bosses treat not just me , but I observe how they treat others. I think relationship is important. @@OneUndOnlee Exactly! When Pat was talking about how the boss has to be fired up and excited, and giving it his all, I was thinking about those teachers who come in every day looking like a zombie, and then wondering why their kids act like Lord of the Flies. A little bit of excitement on the part of the leader makes the individuals want to be part of what the group has got going on.

I had a job/career that I LOVED. They paid like CRAP. Well, I quit because they openly sexually discriminated against me by telling me they couldn't pay me my worth because I was a woman and a woman representing their jobs looks bad, so they also called me an assistant rather than a Superintendent, for that same reason. I told them ADIOS when the owner, who was my direct supervisor (and I friend), didn't stand up for me and not only that but told me I could go make more money selling my body than building houses.

I just gave up and ask my manager "tell me what you want me to do" 2 managers dont relate to the 10-15$/h job. They dont know what we even do 3 Zero vision, same boring process over and over again

I disagree. Number one reason people leave a job is because of miss-treatment. If you yell, swear, lie, gaslight, or bully your workers, down the road they'll go, I don't care how much you pay them. I know a guy who had an 800k a year salary, but his boss was so verbally abusive that he left within 6 months and took a job for 150k instead. I like Patrick but I think he jumps on the band wagon of good feelings and forgets what really goes on in the work place.

I've been with my company for 10 years, it's in the security field so it's not the best of job but it's also not the worst. I love what I do. I mainly work with securing properties and their data. I travel all over northern Indiana to fill in or patch things up with our clients because of things like employees leaving and or simply not showing up. I'll be stuck training them all the time too. One of the things I've learned over the years despite the fact they are "family owned" this company doesn't care about you. All that they care about is you showing up to do whatever the client wants and them getting paid. No bonuses, no merry Christmas, not even so much as a thank you unless they're begging for you to cover for someone else. Sure that works out in my favor because I am always getting over time. Granted I am never late and certainly not showing up. Rain, sleat or snow I am there. But this trip is getting old so January I started putting myself out there and filling out applications and passing out my resume. Yeah, sure it's job security, but it sucks knowing that my company doesn't really value me. So, why did I stay so long knowing this? They gave me a job at time when I couldn't find one. That made me loyal. But loyalty only goes so far. I had a phone interview the other day with a potential employer. I told them much of the same thing. Your people are your bussiness. Treat them well and recognize them or eventually they'll go.

Alexander and Parmenion This is the story of the difference between working for someone and working with someone. Having someone work for you or working with your employees to increase their productivity. How do you get people to walk from Macedonia to the Indus river deep into the Indian jungles...? Thousands of miles on foot surrounded by enemies... Is this achieved with a whip? Or with the sweat of your own brow and the promise of a better future? He actually delivery on that better future for most of the people who made it to the other end of the campaign. Except for Parmenion of course. Beautiful lessons in leadership all over the story. Working together to achieve common goals. Structure of an organization. Leadership structure in a heirarchy, etc.. Read this one story and you will know why the corporate structure actually works. In many ways that one campaign was the beginning of the corporate structure. Took many years to get here. Still have a long way to go. This is something that is so simple yet very difficult to implement. Easy to fail at too.
