I was at an antique mall last year, scrubbing through crates of records when I caught sight of The Stooges debut album sitting right in front of the bins! It was still inside the shrink with it's original inner sleeve and in fantastic condition. To top it all off it was a genuine first pressing! Taking it home and giving it a spin, it was like the year 1969 was playing right in my bedroom. The soul crushing price to get it? ... $5. It is perhaps my best record find ever, yet to be outdone.

Great find. I once found a copy of McCartney's Flowers in The Dirt. Not my thing really but noticed it had a signature on it so picked it up for 50p in a charity shop(think you call Thrift shop) now been verified as a genuine signature and been offered £1000, had a few really nice finds when digging (an OG press of Rhythm of Life by James Mason for £20 now being worth at least $1000 being my next best). Been collecting for over 25 years and these finds are harder with Discogs but they still out there

If it wasn't for technology I probably wouldn't have been so interested in vinyl/older forms of music as I am now - technology definitely has its downsides (everything does) but I wouldn't go as far to say it has or is destroying this art form; it's simply rebuilding it into something different to cater for new generations.

I don't think Technology is what's diminished the music industry directly but I agree that it has in an indirect but very much still detrimental way. What I mean is.... everyone has ADD now because of modern technology and therefore cannot or will not take the time to dive into music that actually has meaning that takes time to unravel if you will so 3 to 4 min straight forward cash grab music that is catchy is enough for modern listeners the majority of the time I'd say. With that said though anyone who claims that music is as a whole as good now as it was let's say in the 90s? Your just deluded. There are some exceptions but those are for us who actually take the time to find them and delve into true musicians and artists. That's not even to mention anything before aforementioned decade. I feel like Music as art started to die in the 2000s. I was born in 87 and I grew up with it all everything from the 40s and 50s because of my parents all the way up to the 2000s and I distinctly remember when I hit a brick wall on discovering truly exceptional music on a wide scale and to me that is when the 90s ended. Again expecting of course. Music today is boring and uninspired and overproduced (another L for Technology I'd say). Just my meaningless opinion though lol. Cheers all

Innervisions is the place to start, in my opinion. More consistent album and easier to get through - not to mention the political messages poured into many of the songs, which elevates the songs from being just funky and slick songs into more meaningful territory with even bigger weight. But SITKOL is also an awesome album that grows after many listens, it should definitely be listened to after acquiring Innervisions first.

Although Innervisions is shorter and also really good, and higher ground is an essential song so a good place to start.

@@aydinpehlivan772 It is a good place to start with the hits on SITKOL (Most people are probably already familiar with the hits, though), but I feel that if you want to start with a particular album, then go for Innervisions, as it is more consistent both in terms of songwriting and in terms of having a thematic common thread. It has a seamless flow of great songs that SITKOL does not have, in my opinion.

I'm a sax player and it took me learning more about how to improvise and play jazz before I could truly appreciate Coltrane. He's not just wiggling his fingers and playing any old thing. Love Supreme is one that you just gotta sit and listen start to finish. It's a journey.

@@noblerecords You'll never find this, because no one knows about it, or falls for another pressing: "Elephant Mountain" by the Youngbloods. When it first came out, it was a super-thick pressing. Two later versions had one thick(but not as thick as the initial one) and one thin. Since I still had the original(although warped), it was, by far, better sounding than the subsequent pressings. It was a huge difference. Most people fall for the thinker subsequent version, and I doubt if you will ever find the original one.

I think another one of the great entry/intermediate jazz albums would be Time Out from The Dave Brubeck Quartet, I fell in love with that record from the first time I heard it and it's a great place to start with jazz and especially some non-traditional themes, phenomenal record man

Loved your list! especially The Stooges reference. That's one album I have! Our band was lucky enough to open for the Stooges frequently during the late 60s. My brother, Michael, played sax with them a few times at The Grande Ballroom in Detroit. Great jazz selections, as well.

On your recommendation, I just listened to Townes Van Zandt on Spotify. Wow. I'm 70 years old and a lifelong "folkie." How did I miss this guy? Each song better than the one before. As excellent an example of singer-songwriting as has ever been recorded. "Pancho and Lefty" brought tears to my eyes. I looked up Mr. Van Zandt's biography. What a sad life he led, but what a legacy. When i was a kid , i had KZEL FM 96.1 of a kind in Eugene Oregon. They played album sides of most of this stuff including the King Crimson,,and over the last 50 years of aqired every single one of these 20 in one form or another. I pretty much agree with list. I have nearly 15,000 albums,, 0 hip hop, not alot of modern country,,, but i have most other genres. I listen to JJ Grey and Mofro alot right now. Id enjoy digging thru your stack

I recommend Headhunters to buyers. Superfly - beyond essential ,mindblowing. It's not classified as Funk to be technical, Soul LP. Blue, not her best -they came later, but a gorgeous effort . Kind of Blue, probably an essential. A light listen, but so clever, skilled . 4/20 we agree on. Hurrah!

@@noblerecords One record that you should listen to all the way through at least once in your life is Acting my Age by Graduate. It's hard to find on vinyl but it's a great album. Curt Smith and Roland Orzabal of Tears for Fears were in Graduate before Tears For Fears. I will warn you it's not for everyone but I love it. It's key tracks are Elvis should play Ska, Acting my Age, and Julie, Julie. Great album, Great songs. They are kind of Campy songs but still great. I bet no one in this comment section has heard this album.

When I was growing up, In The Court of the Crimson King was pretty regularly on the radio...mainly I'd say the title track. (the whole thing!) You could hear all kinds of cool stuff on late night FM radio in the 70s. I definitely first heard them on the radio.

The best book about albums through the decades is "The Mojo Collection." Mixes the best-known stuff with some lesser known classics. Pretty much all of the records mentioned here are included. BTW, I wouldn't characterize "Marquee Moon" as aggressive punk. The hardest thing to get used to is Verlaine's voice, but the guitars are more West Coast sixties than Punk. Also, people tend to overlook how psychedelic parts of that Stooges album are. Yes, it is aggressive proto-Punk in parts, but it also has weird slower songs, too. Finally, Nick Drake's "Pink Moon" is a lot more minimal than his other albums, but they are all equally good,

Ever since the Velvet Underground, we had 15 years of bands in New York trying to reinvent them. I would say that Television was the best effort. They were better than Talking Heads , Modern Lovers, or Richard Hell and the Voidoids.

An impressive, diverse list. I have most of these, and I share his passion for those underrated ones: Joni Mitchell's Blue; Stephen Stills' Manassas; and of course Nick Drake. Fine jazz and blues here as starters, as he says. Despite your favorite genre, I think you will find his selection enjoyable and mind-opening. Of course albums are "missing" from this list. This is a distillation, and a great one at that.

Hello, huge Zombies fan here. I was to young to be aware of The Zombies during the 1960's, however in 1975 I found an Album by the Band Argent called The Circus, and my life was forever changed after listening to the song: Music of the Spheres, as a 15 year old in my basement bedroom with my headphones on. I highly recommend checking out all of Argent's albums as well as newer albums by The Zombies that they have released since 2000. Their 2015 Album Still Got That Hunger is another Masterpiece. Some people say that music is a matter of life and death. It’s not. It’s far more important than that. That was a good list and I have a fair chunk of those albums. What hit me hard was you talking with so much passion particularly about “Blue”. I was pretty much in tears. It’s such an album. Not just her style of songwriting but the naked soul of the lyrics. My personal fave is ......Canyon but for my own (deep) reasons. Her first 8 albums are the strongest canon of any artist ever.I can’t fault your selections. These are essential albums. You can’t replace one with another but only add and make the list longer. So for those who read the comments I would have to throw in What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye, an impossibly brilliant towering odyssey to the soul of a nation. No Other by Gene Clark, ignored on release. Carefully constructed by his producer with a cast of the best musicians and backing vocalists. Strength of Strings has some of the best vocal work ever and Some Misunderstanding is one of the most achingly beautiful songs to come out of the USA. Oh and Heart Food by Judee Sill because I Love Judee Sill And I Always Will Now to wipe those tears away

Some great picks for music I love. I feel Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”. deserves a prominent spot on any top recordings list. Fantastic album imo. Marvin at his peak, trying new stuff in the production process. This album had a tremendous impact on me as a young man overseas in the Army. It’s been my favorite album since first hearing it in ‘72. Thanks for sharing your favorites. 😎👊🏼

Nice List In 2004 I saw The Zombies and Love on the same bill at Town Hall in New York. In the late '90s, Tom Verlaine would hang out with me at my apartment in the East Village.

When I saw the thumbnail of this video popping up my first thought was: Manassas should be on the list. And indeed, it is! Such a great album. I bought this album 50 years ago, played it 500 times or more, even on cheap turntables, and it still sounds as new.

They are my favorite band for sure! Funhouse is my favorite album, great consistent album of high energy songs that really feel like raw stooges, but their self titled album is crazy good too. 8 great songs I would say

Dude... THANK YOU!!! I started off by checking each album on KZbin, and you were totally right... all these records I'd sorta half- heard of but never really got into, for whatever reason. (I already have a couple, but most are new to me). In the end, if you recommended it, i went straight to Discogs and put it on the wantlist. Anytime that you want to do another "20 records" video, I'm down with whatever you like! Thanks again for these recommendations. (I have a pretty decent batch of records, about 345, but I'm always on the lookout for something good!)

Many people overlook the greatness of Stephen Stills. Glad you mention him. However my feelings which don't matter is his best album was his first after CSNY, just named Stephen stills. So go on and love the one you're with. Thanks for introducing me to Nick Drake. Yeah , I am 65 and never heard of him.
