Rdr2 is a perfect game. Story, mechanics, controls, immersion. I replay it now and again just to feel it. I have 600 plus hours on a couple playthroughs. Hunting/fishing simulator when I'm trying to unwind.

Persona 5 Royal. I mean, come on: from the in medias res open, through all the highs, lows, laughs, and tears, the game tells a story that could never be told in any other way. I've seen parts of the stage adaptation, and I once found a spec treatment for a cinematic trilogy of it. But there's only so much depth you can experience from the story, just by passively watching it.

Rise of the Tomb Raider. Lara grows into a battle hardend adventurer but can still be vulnerable in a crisis, highlighting that she, too, is only human. Gears of War 3. An epic finale with action, emotional heartache, and loveable characters. Arkham Knight. Sure, some of the writing could've been better, but it was still an epic story that pushed Batman so close to his breaking point, and Scarecrow really got under his skin

Someone else already mentioned it, but I have to say that Planescape: Torment stands alone when it comes to great video game narratives. Disco Elysium is the closest any other game has come to it in my opinion, but Planescape is easily the most thought-provoking and philosophical game I've ever experienced.

I might be in the minority here but I say the Mass Effect Trilogy is a single game. Let me explain, yes I know it's 3 games and I agree 2 is the best of the 3, what I mean is that you can't just play 1 of the games, you've gotta play all 3, no breaks between to play a different game. Like for me if I say "I'm playing through Mass Effect" I am playing through the entire trilogy, not just ME1. The way the 3 are intertwined and how much they play off of each other, I have yet to see another trilogy do the same. Man, what happened to Bioware?

Star Wars KOTOR was the game that got me into both story driven games and RPGs in general. As for my favorite story of any game, it would probably be Warcraft 3's if I'm being honest. And Persona 3, 4 and 5 also have stories that I like a lot, at least one of them should have been on the list.

I love singleplayer games because I always playing games alone and here's my Top 20 singleplayer games with the greatest stories: Unchardet 1, 2,3 & 4, The Last of Us 1, Witcher 3 the Wild Hunt, Red Dead Redemption 2, Nier Automata, Resident Evil Village, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, God of War 2018 & God of War Ragnarök, Alan Wake 2, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, Metroid Prime, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 & 3, Sonic Frontiers and Sonic X Shadow Generations and yes I listed sequels and 2 same game series stories because sometimes sequels have a great story too! Red dead 2 is a game that's supposed to be all about freedom and possibilities but the actual missions are so linear and have so much hand holding that they make Naughty Dog games seem like sandboxes. They're all like "Ok now stand exactly here and shoot exactly there, ok now you can move forward and you need to stand here and press X, ok now hide here and don't move until we tell you it's ok, now you have to switch characters and use this specific weapon to shoot here". Rockstar could code an image of an actual turd as a game, call it GTA6 and it will still sell in the millions, never underestimate the casuals! Rockstar mission design is closer to a prolonged series of QTEs with no onscreen prompt for the correct button sequence or the arbitrary time limit associated with them. Go to glowing dot on your magic cowboy radar and perform the exact function dev wanted you to based solely from short text description. Lock-on shoot a comical amount of "AI" appearing out of thin air, rinse, repeat.

Mass Effect 2 is such an awesome RPG and 3rd person shooter. Mass Effect 3 is awesome as well, except the ending of that game. When an ending occurs, the ending has to be fully finished. Bioware made a big mistake to make Mass Effect 3’s extensive endings DLC, shouldn’t be made that way.
