@@victorcorpadea1340 I mean, I know some tattoo artist will "finance" a tattoo if it's large enough to warrant multiple sessions. If you wanna get a sleeve, and it'll most likely take multiple sessions, then they might charge an hourly fee and you could save up for each tattoo session. Or they might charge you based on how far they got in the tattooing process For example, the artist got all of the important line work down on your sleeve and was able to get some shading done - that might be one price. Then next session, the artist managed to get all the rest of the shading done and add in color or other details, that may or may not be the same or different price. So it ultimately depends on the artist and the type/size of the tattoo. Nevertheless, the total amount spent on your tattoo will still be significant in relation to the piece.

because they think they are brain surgeons because they know how to draw, if you are good at art and love what you do why charge someone to draw something, Tattooing on the other hand is also a bit overpriced its not worth 180-300 n hour its really not and for them to charge someone so much money for needle being shoved in your arm a million times. Don't get me wrong I respect the craft but not the way artist complain about everything, it is part of customer service if you don't have good customer service skills you should not be a tattoo artist.
@impeeing66115 жыл бұрын
Sage Taylor i get what you mean, but also, artists in general charge money for commissions because that is their profession, you cannot expect someone to do something free regardless of their passion because this is how they make their living. brain surgeons and artists work in different fields, and don’t forget when you’re paying an artist you’re paying a qualified and experienced one, you’re paying for the years of time and training they have put to get to this level. the expensive tattoos are the good quality ones and the ones that have had the most time perfecting
@VeparsDream82645 жыл бұрын
@Sage taylor People are entitled. They think just because it's art, doing it is reward enough. People just can't grasp the concept that this is a job and a business just like anything else and you can't live off the love of the trade. Just because you love something doesn't mean you should do it for free. These aren't just doodles hanging on your parents refrigerator this is professionally done then put on your skin forever. It takes time. It takes care. It takes money! 😯 Graphic designers and other artists get the same kind of bozos thinking they can get their stuff for free or discounted because "art isn't a job, it's a hobby". People need to know they aren't just paying for the art they are paying for artist's time. If all these artists did all these drawings for free then they wouldn't have time for things they are actually making money with and they have a greater opportunity to have their art stolen and someone else does the tattoo. At that point they lost money. That sucks! Just like any other business the paying customer is the top priority. I feel it's not a hard concept to grasp but for other it may be a little more difficult, I suppose. If you don't like the price of the art then I guess you didn't really want that tattoo.
@kaylidiaz06165 жыл бұрын
Sage Taylor I wouldn’t say that’s overpriced when you factor in the equipment they have to have and maintain, replacement needles (new one after every tattoo), ink, amongst a lot of other items that they have to buy themselves. They also have to pay to have a slot in the shop so really you should also be tipping for the service as well.
@crayhack5 жыл бұрын
So sometimes I think it's probably because they are unsure if it'll turn out as something they like. Like I don't want to pay for something that doesn't look the way I imagine it to look. Problem with that is, if I wanted it to look exactly how I imagine, I should do it myself. I can't so I give my best description to someone and pay them to make their interpretation of that.

It's more likely to get infected if you cover it up after you remove the initial bandage put on by the tattoo artist. Please stop advising people to cover it up. They could get an infection, lose ink, scar up, and just completely ruin the tattoo doing that. I think this comment is well-intentioned, but it comes off very Boomery. It’s been a really long time since that stereotype dominated. Even in the 90s, I knew a guy absolutely covered in tattoos and the only thing that really freaked out profs was when certain prison tattoos accidentally showed. He did have to start telling people up front that he did time in his early adult years, and that is why he has Nazi tattoos. He tried to cover them, but people notice tiny pieces of certain images, especially where I live, we’ve had problems with Nazi cults for decades. But my point is that even by the 90s, the tats had to be very offensive to be noticed. Ofc the guy got the Nazi stuff removed or covered as he was able to afford it. I have a coworker at a traditional history museum with an MA who is very heavily tattoo’d & only people over 70 even notice it.

It's kind of a celtic design so a ton of knots and whatnot that just looks sick as hell imo and a lot of others being that its the tattoo that I get the most attention from, well that and my eye brows. Lol. Took roughly 6hrs to do all the outline which was one session and the shading took roughly another 7hrs which we decided to do in 2 separate sessions. funny thing is I also have my whole back done and that whole tattoo took approximately 5hrs total so that should kind if tell you how much detail my forearm tattoo has.
@richardsalinetrojr19572 жыл бұрын
@matchboxmango I've always delt with the same 2 artist and anytime I've had a appointment I've onlly had to wait about 20min for them to get setup and ready plus maybe another 5min or so to shave area and thoroughly clean area to be tattooed. Personally though I prefer dealing with the wife artist simply because she has a very soft hand so by far less pain than her husband who has a heavier hand and kinda drills into you sometimes but then again my skin tends to be a bit tougher than most so sometimes they don't really have much of a choice but to drill into me in order to get the ink nice and vibrant. Lmao
@lukasjablonskas37122 жыл бұрын
It's worse when you see that "artist" is hurrying - checking the clock, etc. and then after you need to tell him that there are spots where he missed, went too fast with the outline so it fallout etc. I think golden rule is pick the best of the style in your country even if it means waiting more or saving more money.

A good tip. I just got my first tat not too long ago. It was a memorial piece for my dad. Instead of what I was expecting he actually did it a lil different. There were supposed to be 3 roses on the bottom. He talked to me and said it would be better if there was one rose. This was coming from the dude that owned the shop. He explained why it would look better and I said ok. In the end it went past my expectations and I love it. Always listen to the artist. Don’t ever second guess them. They know what they are doing
@CharlotteElizabeth30006 ай бұрын
This exact thing happened to me with my first tatt. Except it came out worse, not better, I was so nervous about what to expect that I just blindly agreed with what he was saying.. lets just say the musical score on my arm no longer makes any musical sense... 🤦♀ (in our email consultations I had already told him that the score was from an important piece of music, but I guess he forgot, or, said something that I just didn't hear properly at the time of the session. I am also autistic so don't always process information/questions immediately).

@@CharlotteElizabeth3000My tattoo artist & I had to have a talk yesterday because the design I want won’t work out as literally as I want it. I could tell he was struggling to understand how little I can visualize as he was explaining. So he asked questions & helped me define the must-haves, like the exact species of wild rose (in practical terms, 5 petals, pink), and the order of the elements. I did have to spend 15 mins with myself to talk thru why it’s going to be ok that my river image will be bordered by rocks along the rivers edge. In fact, once the river moves into the prairie, the river banks completely change, and there’s no graceful way in 12 inches to get from a pretty boulder bordered mountain river to the dirt embankments. My artist is very patient about me not really understanding tattooing skin vs drawing. But I like that we never assume we’re vibing, he’s super professional but not terribly warm, and discuss each element in detail. I did tell him to go wild with the hoodoo design (I’ve got a river plus 7 nature elements - wild plants, hoodoo, deer prints - coming together), I guess he’s not from the region, I got to show him something he had no idea existed! I was kinda surprised, he’s got bones tattooed all over, I assumed he was a fossil guy & hoodoos and fossils happen in the same places, but maybe he just likes bones. Or the look. I see vertebrae , I jump to nerd conclusions.

I am so happy that you talk about the consumption of alcohol when getting a tattooed. Alot of people don't know that drinking alcohol makes your blood thinner, and that's also why most bleed more when getting hurt while drunk. Not only is getting tattooed with alcohol in your system dangerous due to access bleeding, but it's also pointless because your skin won't take the ink as well and it will likely turn out splotchy or even faded completely when healed.

I asked my tattoo artist if she could do something like it. She came up with a design that incorporated my design with roses on each side, symmetrically instead of surrounded. I loved her design and got it tattooed on my thigh. Everytime I look at my artwork on the wall and her artwork on my thigh, it makes me really happy. I enjoyed the experience of getting a tattoo. 🐙⚓ I dealt with the pain and kept telling myself "pain is temporary, pain is temporary " I got through it, and I love my tattoos. 🖤

Thank you for explaining the deposit process. I didn’t know that you could tell them you didn’t want the tattoo after they drew it for you, so I ended up getting it anyways. I suggested a different placement and the artist was very strict about where he wanted it so I just went with it. I feel like I had to follow through bc he already Drew it out. The tattoo he gave me is way too light and looks like a child’s henna tattoo. I hate it and it was the most expensive tattoo I’ve ever gotten, $500 for a small cyber sigel band that took 1.5 hours, out of the artists home. Next time I will definitely do more research before getting my next tattoo! You seem very professional and aware of your clients concerns.

I'm going through the pain and expense and long process of having a tattoo removed. Because I didn't like the drawing or the placement but the dude insisted that I trust his "artistry". Very few tattooists are actually artists. It's a hard lesson, no more tattoos for me.

4:35 my tattoo artist was doing a piece on me, and he had two walk ins come in that were obviously drunk and high. So he went slower on my tattoo in hopes that they’d leave and not want to get a tattoo instead of him declining them. And it worked haha.
@maddiemay61184 жыл бұрын
Honestly, asking what an hourly rate on the chair is and roughly how long they think it’ll take isn’t bad. Not asking the full price. Not asking exacts anything. Your job is to tattoo. My job is to buy your work. It’s not fair to blind side a client after the work is done with some number they aren’t prepared remotely for. Just as it’s not fair for the client to not appreciate your work. Open communication.

I dont plan on cheaping out if I get a tattoo but I need to know how much to save and what to budget for and I would have to know that before the process started(after all the consults). I would need very realistic numbers as I have no experience what so ever with tattoos.
@NancyTigress4 жыл бұрын
Usually tattoo artists are hourly. She didn't say you can't ask that. She said you can't ask about a sleeve tattoo price. There's no specific way to know that. Depends on the tattoo wanted, design, the persons skin and their tolenence. And the hours it will take. There's always the way to tattoo a few hours at a time when you have the finance. Because yes tattoos aren't cheap. 😊
@rileymcgill98934 жыл бұрын
I think you actually should ask these types of questions. Especially the aftercare stuff. If you are unsure or the artist didnt go over it well enough with you you should ask. And what if I come in with 300 bucks bc I'm guessing what the tattoo will cost and it ends up being 450. It's okay for it to be 450 but it's better for everybody and the artist to have a good idea of what the tattoo will cost. If I buy clothing, jewelry or a house I know what I'm paying upfront and that was the example she submitted. Dont need an exact number but damn I should have a pretty good idea. Sorry for the rant I just think asking questions if better for everyone including the artists and should not be frowned upon.
@sammanthat4 жыл бұрын
I also think an important piggyback question to asking an artist's hourly rate would be to gauge how long that specific tattoo might take. That way, one could sort of have a rough estimate of how long to schedule out in advance so that there's enough finance to pay. (I personally would rather prepare to have more $$ than the estimated amount, because what if it costs more than you estimated? nor does it consider tips as well) That's just my opinion (I'm from the US, so we don't include tips in anything lol)

My artist takes only one client a day. His studio is outside the city so he takes into consideration the travel time of his clients, and he allows his clients to rest after they arrive and before they leave so he just focuses on one. Hence he’s already booked for a year by the end of January or February (his only breaks are Christmas and the day after). I love my artist so much 😍. I can't imagine saying these things!! But, as a heavily tattooed person, I have some peeves for artists; 1)arguing about what I'm asking for--if you can't do it, then say so or if it truly is unreasonable, say it politely 2) taking an appointment you don't want --I had an artist get called in 2hrs early (unbeknownst to me) to tattoo me and he was pissed. Completely gouged me out 3) being late or backing out---just like artists don't appreciate it, neither do clients--I've had several artists over the years be anywhere from 15min late to not showing up at all 4) telling someone when you're tattooing them how hungover you are 5) acting like you're some kind of rock star that's just too cool to be polite, belittling people because they ask "stupid questions". I mean, some of these? I get it. I really do. It would be hard to keep a straight face on some, but some artists, a lot, make you feel like your a real pain in the ass just for asking simple questions

I was overestimated and actually am saving a few hundred now for mine because my first session went so well. I think its always best to know an idea of what you want before and ask to pay for a sit down appointment with an artist to work with them on the design together.
