Great advice! I have taught a few classes of my own, and these are the two beginner mistakes that I see most often. 1. Leaving a watercolor brush to “soak” in the water jar. 2. Placing the water jar and paints on the side of the non-dominant hand. For example, I have seen right-handed people put their paint and water jar on the left-hand side, so they are reaching across the painting every time they pick up more paint or clean the brush. 😩
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber2 ай бұрын
Ah, I didn't include number 1 as my regulars knew what I thought of it and used to scramble to get the brushes out the water when I walked in (!), number 2, yes, I think I still do that, but I have filming equipment in the way, at least that's my excuse :-)

So many of these points are ones I had not thought of! One of my pet peeves in a class is someone who arrives late and wants the teacher to spend a lot of time catching them up. I have a lot of different hobbies, and I think the most valuable point in this list is to try a technique out before doing it on the project. A lot of these ideas are applicable to most hobbies. Great video, as usual. Thanks!

These observations are very helpful and the life lessons are priceless. The best comparison is your early work to your current work. Took me a lot of soul searching and Michele’s amazing advice to get me in the right place. Art is not an exact science and you never know which creation will turn out to be your personal best. Still waiting for my best work to start but that is part of the journey. Peace, love and good karma to all.

Tip # 19 is right on. I used to have a friend who never had *anything* positive to say about my work. Come to find out that the *only* artist he felt had any worth was Norman Rockwell, and nothing *but* a genuine Rockwell ever got a positive reaction from him (not even Michelangelo). When I realized I was dealing with someone with a ridiculously limited taste in art, I was freed from the criticism I had internalized. Never let them grind you down! And Gimlet says the puzzle piece is under the sofa..... 😉

Guilty m’lord, as charged! I try not to compare my work at art classes to other people’s. But walk around and appreciate what they are doing, get ideas etc. I often find that I am over critical of my own work. Walk away for a few hours or days and then re-examine it. Often it is better than I originally thought ( perhaps subconsciously comparing to others?). Remember that the others in the class may be at a different stage in their learning to you. I found this particularly in a drawing class where I was dissatisfied about my ability, went back to the drawing the next day and thought, actually this is quite good for someone who has never drawn before!

Exactly!

Such good advice Michele, thank you! Gimlet is adorable. You have validated me in number 20. I thought it was my aversion to making mistakes and having a hint of perfectionism to try things out on scrapes of paper before using the colors or techniques on a "serious" painting. My sketchbooks have lots of swatches and experiments. I look back on these pages and laugh but they were useful at the time!

My first class taught me to paint at a 20-degree angle to use gravity to our advantage. It can work well for painting with the bead style of wet washes. 35 years later, I tried it again and was surprised how many problems it solves. There are so many styles of watercolour painting that we don't get to see on KZbin.
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber2 ай бұрын
Yes this can work, but you still have to deal with the water at the bottom. I've had to demonstrate for art clubs on an entirely vertical easel, let's just say my feet got very colourful!
@Iwanttodrawachicken2 ай бұрын
@IntheStudiowithMicheleWebber when the bead gets to the bottom, lift it with a brush and use it elsewhere, or move it down to the tape and absorb it with a paper towel. If it's just a sky wash, move the bead to the side tape. Like any painting style, it takes effort to learn and is better with a good teacher. As we were inside, no water or paint was allowed to drip off the painting. A lot easier than dealing with water pooling on horizontal paper.
@sarahromero17192 ай бұрын
#16 is such a huge one for me! You don't want pencil smears or charcoal streaks all over your pretty lines. It'd be enough to make anybody give it up completely when all you need is that brush to brush away the mistake right along with the eraser bits. It's a very good habit.
