Another well-known example of video game changes is Street Fighter 2. In the original Japanese release, the boxer was named M Bison, the guy with the claws was named Balrog and the big bad boss guy with the cape was named Vega. When Capcom bought the game to the US, they couldn't use the M Bison name for the boxer character because it was too close to the name of boxer Mike Tyson and they were worried about being sued so they renamed the boxer to Balrog, the guy with the claws to Vega and the big bad boss to M Bison.

I don't recall a single game that has actually been banned or changed in my country (the Netherlands), and even after a deep dive in Dutch gaming history, I can't find none. There have been some individual stores that refused to sell certain games like Manhunt or Hooligans SOE but nothing that has been done "by law" that I can find.

@@mavadelo Most games that get changed for the German market aren't done so because of law. The publishers are afraid that they won't get a rating for the uncut game, so they make cuts before handing the game in to the rating agency and the rating agency can only rate what they get. Or they don't hand them in to get a rating at all, which essentially means they can't be sold on the German market. Return to Castle Wolfenstein was banned in Germany because back then Nazi symbols weren't allowed in video games (that law has changed by now, now video games are also considered an art form). In all following Wolfenstein games (pre-2017 or something like that) the Nazi symbols have been removed and even though the games have been rated uncut by now and can be sold in Germany uncut, Steam won't let you download the uncut version.

Honestly, Idk a huge amount of TF2's history, but I think the Germany version was made before "Meet the Pyro", so when that film came out, I think VALVᴱ just replaced the original version of the sensored version for Germany to a Version of the "PyroVision" that was released during that update (I think it was modified to not have the "Pyro-Vision" map changes that we have when using an item that allows us to "visit Pyroland", that being one of 2 pyro weapons, or the Pyro-Vision Goggles)

What's interesting about Resident Evil is the fact when it came time to give the 7th game it's name. They did a fun little thing and gave it twist on it. In japan it was called "Biohazard 7: Resident Evil" And in other places, it was called "Resident Evil 7: Biohazard"

The reason behind this is that Germany doesn't want a German doctor to go on a killing rampage. But there is more: they deleated blood from every wepon that has blood on it (the eyelander or bostion basher for example). However they left some wepons out, but i don't remember which.

it not just Mario games. in late 80s-early 90s. Japan video game companies, did that to a lot games. back then. for Example: they never release Final Fantasy 2, 3 and 5 in the USA and Europe. just because they thought it would be too hard for us to play and understand the games. In the USA, they release what was call "Final Fantasy 3" on the NES.. but it was really "Final Fantasy 4" in Japan. Plus, they water down the game. They didn't switch to Final Fantasy numbers back until mid 90s. when Final Fantasy 6 came out for the Super Nintendo around the world. And then they finally release the Real the Final Fantasy 2 ,3 and 5 games to the USA and Europe until early to mid 2000s.

For people who are wondering what happened to L4D2 in Australia: the R18+ rating didn't exist at release, so it was refused, and had to be censored for sale: less blood, no zombies resembling cops, no corpses and no death by fire. The uncensored version was re-submitted five years later after R18+ was implemented, and thus, us Aussies got the full L4D2 experience with a free patch!

These video games restrictions are annoying. Here, where I live, gambling in games is banned. They say it's because of addiction but I think otherwise. After the player would spend half a money in casino for nothing, they would realize it's not worth even trying in real life. It would give players a valuable lesson
