*I lived around the corner from Steak & Ale Nº 1, and was so sad to see it close, be torn down, and replaced with an institution that I never visited!*

The Steak & Ale in Topeka replaced a restaurant known as literally "The Squat & Gobble". When it disappeared it was replaced by a used car lot.

Just because their not in business anymore doesn't mean they were the worst. But you already know that. Your title was just meant to draw people into commenting, positively OR negatively, all for the YT algorithm. Well done. You did it.

They do this “clickbait” and misleading titles for the money. It’s only about the money and not the quality. More views, more money.

Growing up in Massachusetts, I went to the Hilltop Steakhouse many times. It’s a shame that it closed 😢

Steak & Ale came into Virginia as Jolly Ox, because at the time state law prohibited the use of an alcoholic beverage in a restaurant name. It later did become Steak & Ale for a few years before it vanished.

Quincy’s Steak House omitted. A much better than average steak house in my opinion. Thanks 👍

York was fantastic! The food was outstanding. HIlltop was great in the 70's but really went downhill quickly.

The only one that sounded familiar was YORK's Steakhouse! Today, Texas Roadhouse makes great steak, I get a tear in my eye shortly before eating the last piece!

My dad referred to Mr. Steak as "Mr Shoe Leather".... I wish i could have indulged at Beefsteak Charlies! Its no wonder they went under, they had to have been running a 150% food cost! 😂

72 yr old here. I can remember going to York's and also Bonanza/Ponderosa. Both in N. Dartmouth, Ma. Also e joyed going up to Saugus now and then to Hilltop Steakhouse. Now, Texas Roadhouse in N. Dartmouth Ma is our go-to. Always good and good prices, too.

I remember going to the Ache & Stale back in the 90's. The dim lihjying was so you couldn't see how bad the food looked.

Black Angus still has 32 locations -- it's been a bumpy ride with multiple owners - the food is great.

The steak houses from the 1970’s still served better steak than most restaurants serve these days. I have to pay exorbitantly for a well grilled steak in 2024. In the ‘70’s you could get a decent piece of beef cooked as ordered for a lower cost. That was then. You can mock these steakhouses, but it was quality well-prepared food.
