So funny to read all these comments below. All the people that think they have this deep relational understanding of the blues criticizing Marcus for his fast pace solo. Let him keep his creative liberties in tact and play the blues. It sounds to me like he understands quite well how to play the blues and also how to make it his own and to hear everyone criticize his style with a reductive perspective like “it’s not like all the other blues” is just saddening. This seems to me like we’re witnessing the evolution of a fine blues player making the blues his own and if you want everyone to play the same box of notes or with a certain blues method, then we’ve already seen the beginning and end of blues music. This was played at an event called “keeping the blues alive” and if you call yourself a blues enthusiast I would think that you would value the archetypes of blues as well as the evolved version of blues. If we rely only on the archetypal sound of blues then, like bluegrass or other semi-traditional music, we’re going to box it in until it’s dead. Just my humble opinion as a musician and appreciator of talented people. Peace and love.

It's also hypocritical I'd say, too, because you have people complaining that he's shredding too much but they'd likely prefer someone like clapton, who shredded far less but was still a 'shredder' compared to 20s delta blues. Blues has always evolved and always will and some can't handle that and don't understand that the stuff they champion is also evolved blues if compared to the true roots. Bunch of schmuck experts on youtube too stupid to shut up and enjoy the music for what it is. It's either garbage or the greatest thing ever recorded, no in-between. You said it far more eloquently than I, but i'm easily frustrated by morons, what can I say... lol

Marcus has quite an original approach, and uses a lot of rock approved arpeggios, a technique which in the wrong hands can sound rather stilted and stiff (in a rock blues setting) but here he pulls it off beautifully, connecting the dots with more soul than one would normally expect to hear in this musical setting. I guess this shouldn't come as much of a surprise however given this 20 year old's remarkable aplomb and stage presence. An amazingly confident and gifted young performer.

I’ve seen a lot post giving mixed reviews on this guy. Any musician any guitar player knows this guy is the real deal. Comparing him to SRV or Hendrix. Obviously you calm tell the influence is there but this guy is on a different all together. People hear someone shred out blues licks in the guitar and automatically say “oh he’s just another srv wanna be. But the fact is this simply isn’t true. This guys throws a little bit of everything in there, which stated earlier from someone already, can be a a major mess and sound terrible from someone trying to force it or can’t properly execute it which Marcus does flawlessly. You can hear blues , jazz and swing , country , Motown , southern rock, and even a little funk. Hats off to this guy for sure! Excited to see how far he goes and what all he comes up with!

As a young blues musician, it’s extremely refreshing to know that there are still young and talented musicians keeping the genre alive and marketable. As well, it’s even cooler to see the best of the modern generation of blues musicians playing together. Marcus King is my new favorite guitarist, because his style is not only virtuosic, but more importantly unique. He has a trademark sound that’s all his own. If you pay attention, he almost never bends, much like a jazz guitarist, and he has the best balance of flash without sacrificing feel and soul. Kirk fletcher as well, he has a sound all his own with combined influences of B.B. and the rest of the 3 Kings, but with his own twist.

No, he worked hard at it until he got there. Give him credit.

This vid was my first experience listening to his playing and singing voice. Lots of soul in this young man!

I like his singing more than his guitar playing, personally. MUCH more soul in his voice than his fingers. Dude can wail.

Reading the first 4 or 5 comments of this video reminds of a joke. How many guitar players dose it take to change a light bulb? Five, one to screw it in and 4 to criticize the technique.

Thank God there are young musicians like Marcus keeping real music alive. Just saw him in Harrisburg, PA at Club XL and they blew the roof off the place. Heading to Ardmore Music Hall next week to see Samantha Fish, another brilliant and young blues rocker. Long live the blues!
