I mean... some of the modern metal/hard rock bands are incredibly talented. Trivium, for example, is more technically talented than Metallica. And I could name a bunch more. But are they as good at song writing? Do they have as big of an overall impact on the genre as Metallica? Not even close. But if we're talking about pure technical skill, there are plenty of bands out there that are above and beyond Metallica. From a technical standpoint, Metallica aren't even top tier. But their song writing, influence and staying power are unmatched.

@@Dancing_Psycho Thanks man! And I'll say this before I get ratio'd (😂) James Hetfield is a rhythm guitar God. The man is like a machine. His ability to lock into the tempo is like a metronome, and it's also very impressive that he can sing vocal lines and play riffs with completely contrasting rhythms simultaneously. His right hand technique is unparalleled as far as I'm concerned. Its the stuff he does on the fretboard that's not really anything super technical. Basically, he's not writing any Dream Theater type riffs. But the riffs he does write, even if they are what some might call basic, are also epic and iconic. This is the best way I can put it... Metallica is like The Beatles or the Led Zeppelin of the metal genre. What they might lack in technical ability, they more than make up for in their song writing. And frankly you can ask any band out there who their main influences are. If Metallica isn't on the list, then some other band who was heavily influenced by Metallica will be. Their influence reaches so far that I would be willing to bet that there isn't more than two degrees of separation between any current metal band and the influence of Metallica.

Not entirely true! A lot of metal was played on the radio, and t.v., but more of the mainstream stuff. That's how metal got to be so popular in the 80's! There were certain channels that played all types of metal, mainstream, or not. Mainly on the weekends.

This song is such a masterpiece on so many levels. The song is about drug addiction and how the drug becomes the master of the user. Most of the song is written from the perspective of the drug. "I'm your source of self destruction", "I will occupy, I will help you die", "Come crawling faster, obey your master", "blinded by me you can't see a thing". There is a brief part where the user is talking to the drugs, "Master, Master where are the dreams that I've been after, Master Master, you promised only lies". As if the lyrical wasn't enough they went a step further and the music itself follows the drug addiction cycle. It starts off heavy (the addict is craving the drug), then transitions to a very mellow piece in the middle (this is when the person takes the drug and is on a high), then you hear the music ramping up as the drug wears off, and finally the music gets hard again (the addict begins needing their next fix). This song is a testament to how talented this band is from composition, lyrics, and musical talent.

The song is about the effects of drug addiction. Even the structure of the song was meant to mimic the cycle of addiction. Frantic at the start, (needing a fix), and then mellowing out (getting a fix), but it not lasting long before it becomes even more frantic (needing another fix).

Depending on how we define most popular, arguments can be made for a couple of songs. If we also look outside Metallica's normal fanbase/listeners a case for "Nothing Else Matters" can probably be made. It was insanely popular at the time, sold a lot and is still played more than most. My personal favorite is also Fade to Black, especially live and extended versions of the song.
@alfredofletes7106
@alfredofletes7106 10 ай бұрын
I agree. A few years ago, between people who knew Metallica's music, we could say that, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, and One would be there most popular. Those songs would be recognized by people that are familiar with the band. Play Master of Puppets, thanks to Stranger Things, even people that aren't familiar with Metallica, will know it's them if they watched the show.
@fastertove
@fastertove 10 ай бұрын
Again, it probably largely depends on how we define and measure it. Master of Puppets weren't a mainstream song until recently compared to Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, One and the Whiskey in the Jar cover. My guess is that there aren't any hard definition of popular - at least when we compare old and new releases and the different way people consume music today. Who is the authority on this subject?! :) It reminds me a little of whether American football or real football, soccer, is bigger. The arguments boils down to revenue vs users and world dominance. Soccer has undoubtably a larger cultural influence in the world, but it is probably easier to compare revenue... Any way, Master of Puppets is probably Metallica's best song to listen to live, it definitely is mine due to the crowd participation, but when listening casually there're other songs I prefer (e.g. Bleeding Me).

Speaking of being heavy, yeah, eighties is when it all started and Metallica was on the cutting edge of the heaviest bands in the early '80s, but already be the second half of the decade the heavier bands have emerged with the whole Death Metal genre. It really takes time and widening your musical horizon to learn and appreciate all those earlier bands when you begin to look into it see and compare and suddenly you realize that noone has done this before those guys. Of course there already were the proto-Black Metal bands in the early '80s like Venom, Hellhammer and Bathory that could probably top Metallica in being heavy, but what Metallica were always amazing at in my opinion is combining being heavy with being smart in themes, writing and delivery. They were among the first Metal bands that would sing about really socially important topics like depression, destructiveness of drugs, horrors of war, about the society and family silencing people and making them fit the mold etc. Not too many bands do dare or are even capable of following in their wake in this regard even to this day. Btw by any case do not feel ashamed to not know things - you've mentioned that you are 20 years old which means that I personally have had about a 15 years headstart on you and when it comes to the '80s obviously there are people who lived it all while I was just born in 88, two years after 'Master' was released. If you will take your time and listen up on this stuff and read up on it - of course, only if you are interested and passionate about it, otherwise you should not feel obligated - you will be able to deepen your knowledge and widen your horizons as well. I remember some bands that did not amuse me initially, but after some years I was completely stricken by their music. Sometimes it does take effort and time and teaching yourself to learn and appreciate older and simple things, so maybe if you are not impressed with something right now you will recall those bands and revisit them further down the line. All the best to you on your Metal journey.

This song is about addiction taking over a person's life. People start taking drugs and believe it's going to be awesome only to find out that it's destroying their life. The drug is the master talking to the addict. And then after the quiet part it's the addict talking back to the drugs going "why aren't awesome like I thought they would be?" And the drugs are like "Sucker! I rule you and eventually I'm gonna kill you." And then the drug master laughs in the addicts face at the end of the song. You hear the whole band laughing. 😁 And just something to add: I didn't think they are punk rock, but I heard some punk influences in certain parts of the song! Some other Metallica fans agreed with me on that, trash metal having some punk influences

How about Dissection - Storm of the Light's Bane? Despite the name (he was not fluent in English I presume when he named it)-like this, but very darkly atmospheric and to be sure, this music can't be popular; it's as incorrigible as mathematics; it just can't be that way, the Nightside. I don't listen to what I call "Radiomusik", but Lana del Rey is ok.

@4:45 "I didn't know they made this kind of heavy music in those days." Oh, you sweet summer child. If you are referring to Metallica, the first four albums were (in my opinion) their heaviest albums. If you were referring to the '80s, Metallica wasn't even the heaviest band to come out in the '80s. To answer your question @13:00, Metallica is actually considered Thrash metal. Thrash metal was popular in the '80s with significant bands like Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax. Of those three, Slayer was the heaviest. Death metal of the late '80s got even heavier. Most people can't get into it because it is heavy for the sake of being heavy. Excessively fast beats alongside the harsh vocals are too extreme for most. Also, the lyrics are usually very dark and disturbing. Some big names were Death, Cannibal Corpse, and Deicide, but there are many others too. A similar genre called Black metal also emerged in the '80's, being very popular in Scandinavian countries.

Yeah I know quite a lot about modern metal, I'm just very out of touch with 80s metal. Heard of cannibal corpse though! And it came to my attention earlier that Scandinavian countries really enjoy metal music way more on average!

@@Dancing_Psycho very cool. The comment you made had me laughing so I felt the need to respond with a light jab 😂. The '80s were before my time still but some of the metal music that came out of that era was amazing. I look forward to watching more of your content.

This is not their "most popular" song. Enter Sandman is their most popular song by a long shot. That's not to say it's their best song. It's just their most popular. Now if we're talking about their BEST songs, in my opinion Master of Puppets isn't even the best song on the album it was released on. Which is saying something because it's a god damn masterpiece. But that album was just so fucking good, it might not even be in the top 5... and there's only 8 songs on it. Personally, I prefer Battery, Orion, Disposable Heroes, Damage Inc. and maybe Sanitarium.

the kids consuming Metallica in the 80's were usually raised by non existent fathers, or fathers who survived Vietnam War, physically, if not any other way. Most of the children growing up in the 80's were horrifically abused as children so distraction pop music was the norm, while the kids more in touch with their trauma consumed METALLICA.. and the other bands at that time that were talking about the same kinds of things. Serious things.

lol you obviously dont know much or new to good metal. Not hating. But bands like metallica/ babymetal/ opeth/ nightwish have thee largest shows in the entire world. Metal is probably the deepest into music and emotions of the human emotion spectrum. Great react tho. Enjoy the metal journey. PS it has the nicest community of any music genre.

What I meant was that metal isn't and wasn't really appreciated among mainstream music listeners! The size of the shows really says something about how loyal and yes, how big the fanbase is. Still, metal was never mainstream and it was always made fun of. I mean everybody knows what metal is as a genre, but only a certain group actually enjoys listening to it, and yeah the fanbase is insane. Been to many metal concerts!
