A quick review of my 2014 Ram 1500 Big Horn 4x4. I may babble on a bit but I say what's on my mind. I also smack my lips and I don't even realize it... lmao. I hope you enjoy my quick half thrown together attempt at a review video. I am in the process of getting a new setup to help provide better videos for the future.

2010 RAM here. I've owned it for 5 years and here's the issues so far: Upper 90s miles the tranny shifted a little funny, had a full 100k mile service done. Perfect shifting. 104k miles valve cover gasket leaked, had that fixed. It now has 188k miles and no problems. The brakes and suspension are all new. This truck has the 5.7 Hemi and it has been incredibly reliable. It hauls what I need it to and is a beast in the snow. Overall it has been fantastic. Would definitely buy another RAM.

If you want that 5.7 to last basically forever get the lifters replaced with solid ones and install a tuner so you can tell the ECM when you're about to tow something heavy so the transmission can hold gears for longer and run the fans more. I know this is not conventional thinking but install a turbo timer so the engine can idle down for a couple minutes and cool off before shutting down. Even though it doesn't have a turbo all the bearing surfaces are still very hot and flowing oil over them for a few extra minutes can prolong their life.

I love my ram. It's a2017 silver bighorn. Katzkin leather, 3.92 gears. 8 speed, 5.7l Hemi, alpine stereo, 4 wheel drive, crew cab, heated seats steering wheel and side view mirrors, factory spray in bed liner, the fold out cargo floor in the back, and plenty of power. . It is a great truck. No complaints here.

Have a 2014 Big Horn, white, every option they had that year other than leather seats. HEMI, adjustable air suspension on all four, heated seats and steering, factory trailer brake control, etc. LOVE my truck. Still got only 80k because I work from home and only drive it every 2-3 days. We also use it for towing our camper. 6,000 lbs. I don’t even feel it behind me. Rams are awesome.

I've owned 2 rams and the only way to get the most out of the bolts is to re use the manifold and get it planed or use a grinder to flatten it out. They only warp once from the heat so once you plane them out they won't warp again thus putting less stress on bolts. People replace over and over again because your buying new heads that are just going to warp and do the same thing. That's what I did anyways and so far so good. It's been 50k miles

I just purchased a 2012 1500 Ram Laramie...it has 86k on it now.....now, I've owned a few Rams, this being my First Hemi 5.7. I've owned a 4.7l...and a 5.9l Magnum. I e always known the 5.9l is a work horse...know some to have had 300j plus. I don't know many who own a Ram with the 5.7l with high mileage. So, good to hear some owners are still happy with their 5.7l high mile ram .

@@ricksrandomrepairsandrevie9611 Watch out the touch screen will fail. Mine did on 4/1/22 Guarantee it was programed to shut down on April fools. Change them shocks you'll get an even better ride. Stock shocks are crap in all cars. I went with 2" longer shocks/struts on the front. Makes the truck more level.

2014 1500 Ecodiesel tuned & deleted used to tow commercially 880,000 miles. Last motor cracked a head at 423k miles. 8 speed transmission had an electronic failure at 700k. Business partner 2015 Ecodiesel tuned & deleted 452,000 miles fuel pump imploded & filled a cylinder with shrapnel. Hard to walk away from a 4WD truck that unloaded gets 27 HWY. Properly maintained quality filters and fluids.

Bought a 2016 ram 1500 5.7 hemi SLT 4×4 with 39,000 miles. Love hearing the engine turn on and especially when I speed up. Only thing so far that I have to replace is my water pump and it's at 80,000 miles. MOPAR OR NO CAR is all I gotta say.

Watching your video and reading the comments has helped me with my lifter failure fear. I just picked up a 2018 1500 Big Horn with 69k. I love the truck. Rides great, handles great the 8 speed and Hemi are awesome. I changed all the fluids and the transmission filter also. It needs a new right side manifold other than that its good. All you read on the forums is people complaining about the lifter/cam failures.

I have watched several videos about the lifter fail and it is less than 5% of Rams sold. Most people think it's a lifter, when it is the manifold bolts. I have a 2017 Big Horn with 79K and hope it lasts me many more years. I bought it with 17K on it and it still pulls like brand new.

I’ve got the exact same truck, 238,000. Needs cam and lifter job bc of the dreaded Hemi tick that’s now more like a knock. Seriously thought it was a wrist pin or main for a minute. Just changed BJs and hub assemblies last week. Other than the tick, absolutely no complaints. I haul, I’m in construction, siding, windows, bathrooms, you name it. Serve four states, so mostly highway miles. Great truck. Also have an 05, same story. Great trucks.

16K! I just picked up one with ~100k, one owner who was fanatical about his maintenance. Excellent maintenance records. This is a step up from the last truck I had that I sold several years ago. It was a DODGE Ram I ordered from the factory in 1999.

I bought my 2014 new and still have it. It’s my daily driver and I haul our 30 foot camper around. The only work done is the general maintenance you would get from any vehicle…..breaks and exhaust, they don’t last forever on any vehicle. It’s still going strong but when the time comes I will definitely buy another Ram

Sounds like you pretty much have had the same experience as me! I too, had a 2010 F150...by far, the WORST vehicle I have ever owned. Got my 2016 Laramie in 2020, and it has been golden! I absolutely LOVE this truck. The only issue that I have had, is the water pump going out at 120k. It now has 155k on it, and still turns heads. I baby it to death! It's paid for, and I don't plan on getting rid of it any time soon!

Good to hear of your success. I bought my first Ram ever. 2019 Ram Longhorn. Just love it and so far no issues at all. Now I would never go that high on mileage between oil changes. No way. I live in Canada with cold winter months with added idle time to warm her up. Lol. Reason I flipped to Ram? Heard and seen so many good things from workers, friends etc. Cheers 👍🇨🇦

@@jesseadkins8002 It helps to start the vehicle easier and maybe warm it up a little sooner. Some vehicles won’t even start with them being plugged in. I’m lucky myself for my Ram Hemi always starts even if it’s not plugged in but it can be harder on the truck. And ya better have a good battery. 😃

@@s3ndit958 Most people that I knew just dealt with it because the ticking goes away after a minute or so. I replaced mine myself, so I only paid for the bolts and new exhaust manifold gasket. The bolts and gasket combo was $90. If your exhaust manifold is badly warped, it'll have to be replaced too, which is another $100. Thankfully mine wasn't warped much at all. So if you have someone fix it for you, it'll probably be around $300. It also depends on who is doing the job and your location. If you do let it go, its not gonna hurt anything. It's just annoying. If you do it yourself, it is much easier to weld a nut to the bolts that broke off flush. You don't have to worry about damaging the heads that way because they're aluminum. If you use an extraction kit, be careful because its easy to drill too far and damage the heads. I just welded a nut on the 2 that were broke flush. The rest were easily screwed out because they had something to bite down on with vise-grips.

14 Bighorn 4x4 Hemi, recently died on me at 247K miles (timing chain broke & engine locked up). I can’t complain though, it’s been a great truck & is in the shop getting a new engine, I hope it lasts another almost 250k.

My 2016 Big Horn is a beast and I love it. I originally wanted a Chevy, but they're overpriced and they didn't come with dual exhaust at the time. I found my truck online at a Lexus dealership of all places and I don't wish that I had gotten a Chevy.

I love the Bilstein 5100's shocks! I have an older Nissan Titan and I have them it for a leveled look and they're amazing shocks. I love how alot of people hate on rams and are all chevy or ford are better trucks, but to be honest and im not being biased when ram came out with the 4th gen their quality really improved and thier trucks have proven to be reliable good trucks, sure they have thier issues quirks but what truck doesn't.

I have a 2014 Big Horn that I picked up with 27k miles and didn't realize when I got it that year has the most car complaints. I had to do exhaust manifold bolts at 58k miles and just had to do my PCV valve at 91k miles. Did you service the trans, plugs and radiator at 100k miles? I'm going to do that and already have down the diffs and transfer case. You give me hope for at least 150k mile mark, but I don't know about 200k! Are your lifters noisy? Mine are and it worries me about the lifter issues these motors get. I love the truck though and the transmission is the best I ever had in a vehicle so far.

The exhaust manifold bolts are the most aggravating. I have done them twice in my 235k miles so far. I serviced all gear boxes when I did the trans service, can't exactly remember when I did them... 125k maybe. Differentials and transfer case still looked good when I drained them. Plugs at 100k and I have them to do again when I get a chance. Flushed cooling when I replaced water pump. Overall has been a great truck and I still drive it daily over 100 miles a day!

Not if it's a hemi 5.7! I had to replace one head, one camshaft, and rebuild the other head. Back when the engine had 170,000.

2014 Ram hemi nothing but issues. Starting from engine to everything else. Thank god I had the life time warranty on it $100 deductible on engine and all. Lifter issues engine took a dump at 140 k. Always put synthetic and changed oil at f… 5 k. Never abused it and took a dumb. Sticking to it due to lifetime warranty. I will drive it until the wheels fall off

I'm not familiar with the 6 speed trans but would get some more info on it. Not sure if it's a ZF or a straight up Chrysler transmission. If's it the ZF and has been cared for I would take a shot at it.

Got a 2006 ram 3.7 had 8900 when I got it about 17 years ago. Out side of normal upkeep I just replaced fuel pump. First thing I have had to replace. Every else on engine is original Even the clutch.👍 Last August I got a 2004 ram quad cab 4x4 hemi it only had 109500. Excellent condition. Wanted older truck for less tech crap and less to go wrong. Got it for my retirement next year. Love dodge.🤙

Hey Jay! I run the 15k Extended Performance with the Mobil 1 or K&N filter, depends on what's in stock. 😆 I am currently about 230k miles with zero oil leaks, I do burn a little, around a quart which is normal. Thanks for checking out the video. I do appreciate it!

@@classicjay7786 I run 87 about 99% of it life so far. So 87... I believe Chrysler recommends 89, but 87 is acceptable. You won't notice a difference in performance from one or the other. I personally have had no issues with 87.

So some years of hemi would have lifter failure that would require replacing the cam and lifters. I've been lucky enough to never have had this issue. I'm at around 260k miles now with no issues! 🤞

I’ve got an 2018 ram 1500 tradesman that has 33k that keeps having issues. My dad babied the crap out of it before he passed last year. Did he just get a lemon? Electrical issues keep popping up and now it just started pouring gas out the filler tube area. Dealer insists only fix is complete tank & filler tube replacement for $2300. It’s plastic so he says you can just plug the leak. I’m figuring that’s just dealer bullshit or some stupid EPA reg. A leak can’t be plugged? They won’t let me take it out so I’m working with corporate now though it sucks being without a ride. I’m so over dodge as I got two other post 2010 vehicles that are in the shop. One at the same damn dealer that I’m only now figuring out how bad they are. They don’t want to figure out what wrong with my wife’s 2014 Journey RT and it’s been blowing head gaskets since before 30k mileage and is still under warranty. At this point the motor has to be dud. Dealer just wants to replace the whole cooling system, again. Congrats on your 200k miles. I must be cursed or something.

That shudder is common unfortunately. I serviced mine around 120ish.

That may not be your trans. That’s probably the multidisplacement system (MDS). It causes a lot of those shutters at low speeds you’re talking about. Best bet is just to get rid of it.

I was worried about that too when I bought my first one 8 months ago. Bought mine used. It’s not as common as you think. As long as you keep the oil changed regularly, don’t let the truck idle for long periods of time, and throw some zinc additive in with the oil, you should be okay. The zinc additive helps keep everything lubricated, especially when nowadays it’s recommended to use a 5W-20 oil which is thinner. I’ve heard about people using 5W-30 on their rams, but I would advice against it and go with the recommended 5W-20. And tbh, it’s way more common for Chevys to have lifter problems than Rams.

@@deviantarsenal yeah man I’m at 160,000 miles and haven’t had any issues. Only thing I have an issue with is the god awful exhaust leak these rams are known for. They’re notorious for manifold bolls breaking and for having cracked manifolds. Most annoying thing ever.

I'm currently working with a Ram 1500 Tradesman, definitely wish I would've looked at other trims. I purchased it with 126k miles.. already put almost 6k miles and so far.. I think it's a great truck. Unfortnunally I accidently hit a pipe while I was dropping off something in my yard and cracked my front bumper so what does that mean? i'll be upgrading to a steelcraft bumper guard! Next time, i'm definitely getting a lonestar or a big horn mainly because of the interior. The tradesman has such a boring interior and I have no idea why i didn't purchase the 14 model that had everything. Ima give it a year or two before i decide to trade it in for another Ram.

Look at the longhorns I own a 2015 and I am never planning on getting rid of it. Only way I’ll get rid of it is if it gets damaged beyond repair. My coworkers have newer denalis and their interior just does not compare to mine. Unless you down like the western cowboy theme

@@phunk875 just avoid eco diesels the engine is great so far but I hear a lot of people say they can just explode on you. Mines at 198,000 miles. The sensors are the biggest issue I’ve ran into. It would probably cost me thousands of dollars if I didn’t fix my own cars

@kingplush4749 My Ram is at 260k miles now. It's a fairly simple truck to work on. If you do have problems, it's easy to work on. Common repairs are manifold bolts breaking and ball joints. Check out some of my other videos to get an idea of repairs. My experience has been mostly positive!

Thanks for checking out the video! If you take car of them, they will last a long long time! We have trucks at work with 400k+ miles and still going strong. A lot has to do with maintenance. I have done every bit of maintenance myself and currently at 230k miles, and still feels like a new truck.

I have a 2006 292k miles engine is strong as ever maybe better now , I barely did maintenance lol the only annoying thing is the front suspension. I change oil maybe 3 times a year lol hemi 5.7 is the best engine ever !

I have a 2017 1500 Sport 4x4 Ram and its been a reliable truck getting me to point A to B. I recently had to replace the battery it was the original one going on 6 years. And recently as well the water pump and belt idle pully. Started to make a rattling sound at idle.. I only had under 40,000 miles. Running great so far. I do my oil changes every 6,000. Question how do u determine when to fix them exhaust bolts? Haven't had any issues on that yet. Overall am happy with my truck.

Nice! So you will know when the exhaust bolts will need to be done when you start hearing the manifolds sound kinda like a "tick" for a few minutes after starting till it gets hot. If it's real bad it will be constant "ticking" sound.

2015 Big Horn with 163k…also in Middle Tennessee. Runs great and it’s good to hear your at 230k. Gives me hope mine will go that far too. Got both new manifolds and bolts as part of the sales agreement cause she was tickin. Hope the cam and lifters stay quiet as they are now 🤞🙏

i love big american trucks and theres one for sale atm, wondering if i should get one in the future, love the sound and the design of it but idk if i can afford the maintenance + new tyres when that time comes. Atm ive got a good 07 honda crv and its reliable and cheap and thats cool and all, honda makes good cars, but it doesnt have the mean look and the sound that i love. I dont do any offroading, just to/from work, grocery-store and vacation trips which is 7-9 hours each way 3ish times a year.

I have a hard time believing someone who has an Audi sitting in their driveway. Everyone I know that has a Ram has had major problems with it. I’ve had 3 F150s and ALL of them have outperformed a dodge, Chevy, or gmc, which I have also owned.

Not sure what the Audi in the driveway has to do with it, but I'm sure everyone's experience will be different. My father in law was a ford man forever until the last two f150's had serious valvetrain issues before 60k miles, he's now in a GMC. My Ram is currently at 260k miles and still going strong.
