I'm reviewing the 5.7 Hemi in my RAM 1500 truck after 100,000km and explaining why the Hemi is a good reliable engine. As a heavy duty mechanic I have been impressed with this Hemi Engine. lots of power and torque for towing, great sounding engine, its fuel efficient, it's great on pricing, it's a good strong engine, and lastly is it a reliable engine.
So after driving my Ram 1500 truck 100,000km I thought I would review this engine as a mechanic and give you guys my thoughts. Overall I think I have given this truck and hemi engine a great real world test. I have towed over 10,000km up and over the mountains with a heavy trailer. I have gone off-roading driving up mountains many times. I've been stuck in snow more times then I can count and I have a good amount of both city driving and highway driving on the truck.
This engine has 395 horsepower and 410 foot pounds of torque for great power and can tow heavy loads. this truck paired with the 8 speed transmission and 3.91 gears is actually a pretty quick set up for a 5,000 lbs pick up truck. But you guys all expected that, the Hemi is know for its power.
The Hemi is the best naturally aspirated v8 on the market. even the stock muffler sounds great. but when you paired this engine with an aftermarket exhaust my god does it sound great. For those wanting a loud truck. the 5.7 Hemi with a muffler delete is insane, it sounds soo good and raspy, yet still nice and deep at idle. so all in all a great sounding engine.
the fuel economy is also pretty darn good. I know it's a truck and there are way more fuel efficient vehicles out there but, for a truck the RAM 1500 paired with the 5.7 L Hemi gets great fuel economy. I average 18-20MPG with a good combination of in town driving and highway.
The price of these trucks with the Hemi is pretty great right now. the fourth gen RAM 1500 is still selling brand new on dealers lots for usually pretty heavy discounts. so for all that power at a great price its a hard bargain to miss.
these engines are strong. the bottom ends of these engine are built well. 4 bolt mains with a great crankshaft. cast aluminum pistons and forged connecting rods give this hemi engine a great base.
Lastly and most importantly, are these engines reliable? yes they are. are they the most reliable engine ever ? no. but every engine has its flaws and mechanical components can fail anytime. if you treat this engine well and maintain it well odds are you'll be able to run this engine for well over 200,000km.
Anyways guys I hope you liked the video!

I bought a 2009 ram Laramie fully loaded only because the man that owned it was going on a mission trip and needed to get rid of it for the payout. Drove that truck for 120,000 miles and then decided to trade it for a 2014 Laramie with just about every option except the sunroof. That truck now has 118,000 miles on it. I have replaced the water pump,some fuses,thermostat and she still going on her new Falken tires. Once you have ridden on the air suspension of a ram truck, it is almost impossible to ride in anything else. I swore I would never own a Dodge but now I will never own anything but a ram. Also love my hellcat.

I just bought a 2017 Ram 1500 limited, it had 113,000 miles on it and it LITERALLY feels and looks like a new truck, the truck doesn't have any wear at all inside or out. No rattles or strange noises..You just can't tell it has 113,000 miles on it. The first digit of the VIN# is a (1) that means it was built in the USA🇺🇸 If the VIN # started with a (3) they are built in Mexico and have poor build quality and they usually have many problems. Just find a ram with a (1) for the first digit of the VIN# and you have a good truck, pass it on to your buddies if they are in the market for a Ram...

we love our hemi 1500 wtih the 8 speed. we do a lot of heavy towing, about 6000 lb travel trailer, 8000 km per year which is a lot of towing! fuel economy is around 10l/100 km at 110(not towing). power for that heavy towing is great, long hills make it feel unstoppable. fuel consumption when towing is about double, not surprising considering double the weight and the trailer has the aerodynamic drag of a house.

I have a 5gen with the e torgue. Brought It used for 42 G in 2019, and it's a great truck. The only thing is the Hemi tick, mine sat for 4months and the tick was kinda loud after a cold start, After Idiling for a couple of minutes it went away and the engine purrs. I only use Casrtol 5w 20 6395 Chrysler specs and I change it every t 7500miles. One time I tried 5w30 synthetic and it the engin ran fine and little quieter. I'm not going to get political but after Biden was elected every thing jumped in price. This same truck used sells for 50G. My advise to you young folks take care of your vehicles. This will be the end of the road for the hemi, and future Rams will be equipped with a V6. It wont be the 3.6 Pentastar it will be a new design and may have its share of problems.

Nice to see a positive review on the Modern Hemi, I really took a liking to these engines. One correction though the MDS system was introduced in 2005, VVT was introduced in 2009 along with active intake runners. You are correct that 2003+ is referred to Gen III Hemi’s, 2009 saw the introduction of the “Eagle”cylinder head…however two variants share very little in interchangeable parts. Great video!

I have a 1973 Maserati Bora with their 330hp 5 liter hemi with 4 2 barrel Webers. Honestly, this truck sounds like that. The same sound at idle. And, if you let the revs increase gently up through 4 or 5 grand, they both go through all these wonderful variations of their sound. A poll of Bora owners asked what we liked best about the Bora. The #1 response was the sound. So you can imagine my shock when my wife bought a 4th gen 2018 RAM 1500 with the hemi. But I have to say I'm disappointed in the low-end torque. If you put the Bora in 5th at 500 RPM, the torque is right there. It gets really strong by 1500 rpm. The RAM's hemi has to spool up to 3 or 4 grand to get some torque going on. It's really surprising having VVT and all. Overall, we love this truck. Yeah... those lifters... I listen every time I start it. So far so good.

Mine is brand new so I’m not getting awesome fuel mileage except for highway travelling. It gets low 12’s per 100kmh. The truck has 3.92 gears so that’a probably why. I heard it will improve as it breaks in. The power is impressive when you put your foot into it. Big heavy truck but it is quick to acelerate. I’ve had Fords, Chevy’s and this truck blows them away. The F150 eco boost impressed me for power but it has lots of problems. The Ram doesn’t, and if you want they have fixes for any of the common issues. Example: BD Diesel exhaust manifolds to forever fix the broken bolt issue. Melling high volume oil pump to fix the lifter problem. Do those upgrades and the truck is bulletproof.

I prefer a Ford yet they cost more, I just think they are better built however these a great trucks as I have owned 2 of the classic trims. The manifold bolts on my 16 never broke but my 17 broke at 60,000 miles and I still haven't fixed it.. 10,000 miles later which I know is stupid but it's my daily and hard to find time to fix it!

My first Dodge truck was a 2006 Dodge Dakota. It was the standard V6 quad-cab 4x4 with 6-speed transmission. It was bright yellow, and a little under-powered, but it was such a fun little truck to get around in before kids came along. Then I realized those half-doors and seats would not have a child seat and my wife in it at the same time. But I liked the "feel" of the Dodge trucks, so I decided to look for a Ram 1500. I just couldn't get excited about the lines of the Fords or Chevys at the time, but the 4th gen rams were beautiful, and I'd always thought so, even before I started looking for one. I ended up getting a used 2017 Express 5.7L 4x4 with 17,000 miles. My goal later was to effectively turn it into a Rebel. Luckily it already came with all the right options from the factory (44-45 TC, 3.92 gears, limited slip rear diff, etc.). With the addition of 17" wheels, 285/70R17 all terrains, and Bilstein 1500s front and rear, my goal is complete and I'm absolutely loving the truck. She only has about 59,000 miles, but I've reduced her oil change intervals to 4,000 miles (I had an unfounded scare with high engine idle hours and decided to drop the interval), and combined with an aftermarket PPE transmission pan for easier (and more often) transmission fluid changes, I plan to keep this truck going for as long as it will go. I'm hoping for 300,000 miles or more. Thanks for making your videos. It's nice to see other proud (but cautious!) Ram owners, and I particularly like your mechanically-informed opinions of issues you consider, especially your "experiments" to test the truck. Actually I see I'm not subscribed yet, so fixing that now. Take care!
@GettysGarage
@GettysGarage 3 жыл бұрын
thank you sir! the 5.7 is a good engine and it seems like you take good care of it so you'll probably get plenty of life out of it. I do find it odd that the "stronger" transfer case is usually associated with the cheaper optioned trucks. but I guess the 4wd auto is appealing to those higher end buyers. but I bet if you actually told people the bw44-45 is a better transfercase off road a lot more people would option out a truck with it and ditch the auto option. anyways seems like you are enjoying your truck and that's all that matters!
@ddo7802
@ddo7802 3 жыл бұрын
@@GettysGarage I guess, like most things, it's more of a "simpler" than a "stronger" of "better" thing, even though from a purely off-road-dedicated point of view, the simpler machine works better and is stronger. But I imagine they were trying to have 4WD coupled with the thought-free action of AWD all baked into the same cake. And the ability of the truck to turn so tight in 4-high without braking things was impressive, and will probably keep a lot of people from breaking theirs. Often auto companies seem to make changes to help human-proof their vehicles, to the detriment of simple machinery that ultimately worked better, but was prone to mis-use by those who hadn't paid careful attention. Like non-serviceable parts. They last longer than an un-serviced, serviceable part, but not longer than a serviced, serviceable part. It saved them and average people money the long run. But I'm an old-fashioned, traditional kind of person that likes to do things manually, so I do lament the trend. I'd have gotten a manual transmission full-size truck if they sold them in the US anymore, but they're almost all extinct.

My sister has a 2003 1500 with the first gen 5.7. Truck has 365k with original trans. The first engine lasted up to 308k. Would have lasted longer if my sister would have been checking her oil more often, it broke a valve spring and was burning oil. She also has a 18 2500 with a 6.4 with lifetime maxcare warranty , now has 95k it only had to problems. Water had a squeak noise when it was hot at around 10k and it had a harsh downshift at highway speeds. Turned out to be a valve body at 55k. All covered un warranty. The only thing that these newer 5.7 and 6.4 may have premature cam/lifter issues where the roller lifter needed bearings fail and eat up the cam. But if you follow the maintenance this is lowered. Trans are better than before mostly due to software improvements over time.

I bought a RAM LS/NE with the 5.7 Hemi V8 last week, and coming from an performance Camaro with direct injection, my fuel mileage is fcuking terrible as well. Should be illegal actually but the truck is so dam nice so I’ll eat it for a little while. It’s a daily driver unfortunately and already at 1500 miles on the clock, at $80 a tank, I’ve already spent close to $240 on fuel alone; Mix of spirited and efficient driving after break in period though. Did muffler delete last week and absolutely hated it. No refinement whatsoever, obnoxious interior drone at highway rpm, and honestly made the exhaust note in the truck sound cheap. Guy at muffler shop sneered at me on the way out the door like what I did to my truck was a sin. Long story short, 4 days later installed a FM Super 10 muffler until I can install a proper true dual exhaust on the dam thing, and what can I say? I love my truck again! Given gas mileage I doubt I keep the Ram for 100k, but it’s my second Hemi, first was an ‘14 Charger bought with 26k, traded in with 122k, and what I can say about that one was that it did give me one single problem, so I have faith in the Ram. It’s an old engine, but reliability at this point is unquestioned; Great engines overall 👍🏽

I agree with you. I love My 2015, Ram pretty much the same truck, you have , it has 49,500 miles. … I am not completely comfortable with leaving the transmission oil in forever, what’s your thoughts.. I don’t like flushing transmissions and the dealer says leave it alone …

I'm mixed on it at this point. I have heard stories of folks running very high mileage without changing the fluid. but I'm probably going to change mine around 60k miles on my power wagon. power train warranty is up and I'd like to think new fluid is better.

@@GettysGarage I agree with you . My dad was a mechanic, and clean he said fluids are always better.

@@johnf.6942 ya for the most part! I mean I have heard of situations where guys would change transmission fluid and then the transmission wouldn't shift because the clutches were worn and the new fluid is slipperier then the old fluid. but those stories seem far and few between

@@GettysGarage I would not flush it but dropping the pan and putting in a new filter is usually pretty good, but you have to do it for the intervals example ram.. I think used to suggest between 50 and 60,000 miles.. any thing over may damage it. I have a Nissan rogue also and it’s CVT i drain and fill it every 25 to 30,000 miles it runs great. It’s a 2015 , same year as my Ram.

My 2010 runs great. Only issue I have is it hesitates and sputters when you put the peddle to the metal for 2 or 3 seconds. Seems to idle a little rough too. Haven't been able to find the problem yet, but other than that, amazing engine

If thats the only issue on a 11-12 year old truck thats pretty good.

common problem is camshaft and lifters that come apart in these hemi engine's, what type of mechanic are you that you never mentioned that on these engine's, You talked for 20 min wasting time and only experience you have on this engine is your own truck, search roller lifter issues that come apart and roller tip gets stuck on lifter and wipe the camshaft and ruin the cam and engine, you say the only problem is electric and thats minor compare to the knocking and tapping engine,
