Thanks for this video. I have a very old mill I bought a readout like this for. It’s not a standard configuration and mounting the scales was challenging me. Your mounting technique on this little mill got me thinking outside the box and I have 2 axis done. I need to shorten my Y and that’s next. Thanks again for the inspiration!

Thanks for the detailed fitting instructions...........not all mills are the same as far as fitting position is concerned........I have a jig borer that is now a mill so fitting is a bit of a challenge in mounting position differences. BTW.....I wholly applaud the fact that you dismantled the glass scale to cut the aluminium and lastly the glass scale.....that makes it super easy with the diamond cutter in the Dremel and is far more precise.......I cannot imagine how anyone could think of cutting through the scale with a bandsaw even though it worked for them.

No need to completely disassemble the scale to cut. Just take off one end cap and move reader to the other end. Shim the glass on both sides with wood or plastic at the cut location to keep the glass rigid. Cut with the band saw through aluminum, glass and wiper all at the same time. Just file the end square, clean up and retap for the end cap. Done!...I've done several this way.

But I wanted to move it to one of my mills - which just happens to be... the same as yours! :O This will save me SO much re-inventing of the wheel. @@TinC33 Thank you for the response. I have been researching these DRO's all afternoon. It is not clear to me how to determine the size needed. I watched videos that show how to measure travel by marking the table and the mill base. However, shouldn't the length simply be the bed length for x and the bed width for y? And is that not why you cut them? What am I missing? Thanks.

Hi, thanks for this wonderfull video, congratulations for your both perfect technical an scientific approach. I've got the same machine and wonder about : - due to it's drilling/milling design, did you find a real interest in use for the Z axis ? - In the case I would invest later in the third rule, is it possible to buy a 3axis display, but use only the X and Y rule ? Will the "2 dimensions" functions accept to work in this condition ? Thanks

Sure you can buy 3 axis display and only use two linear rails, i don't remember if i use Z axis but if i only use them once, because this mill already got a z axis dro on spindle and more or less i use this as z axis, real z only use for rough adjust...

Interesting video. Quite well explained but too much fast forward has lost me. I have a Sieg SX2LF and and the first problem is, I can't find a power feeder for this type of mini mill. Secondly, I have exact type of linear scales as shown here. and they are longer than the ordered lengths. I have two, one for X axis (ordered as 400 mm but came as 520 mm) and the other for Y axis (ordered a 250 mm but came as 360 mm), I have no choice but to shorten them to fit the milling table (X) and the Y movement. Your video about how to shorten the scales is excellent, particularly the removal and shortening of the glass strip. Hadn't it been fast forwarded I would have had a better idea on how to do it because, I believe, the shortening of the scales is quite a delicate operation, meaning, stuff it up and you're done. So, up to the installation of the scales to the machine, I mostly understood, but the ending part where it is programmed or tuned, I am somewhat lost. I purchased the DRO from Banggood, less the linear scales, in October and have had a lot of bang but not good, as I have been trying to understand why the scales are sold over sized. And this video does explain it all. As for the third scale (Z). I will do that later, as I have to decide where to install it beside the machine. Your machine is quite a beauty, however, at the end of the video it looked like the machine was working like a CNC, like auto milling the work. Do you have that on your Mill? Also, do you know where to get an auto feeder for my Sieg milling machine? Mine is smaller, but packs quite a punch, quiet too. Once again, thanks for the video, I feel confident and happy to try to shorten the scales now. Cheers mate.

@TinC33

I got same as this one, but it's same brand as mill (px-tools) but that mill and equipement is all the same but different brand, like holzmann, bernardo, optimum... I got it original with a mill. For Y axis i use battery drill, but planning to make automatic feed also on y axis, just instal one small dc motor with spees regulation and connect to a handle with a belt, but must to make also mechanism to plug off so still can be used manual. That X Automatic feed is great, because you can turn manual also if the system connect, there is a knob to disconnect gear from feed but almost don't use it, just got conneczed all the time. www.probois-machinoutils.com/en/amp/product/mandrins-et-options-pour-perceuse-fraiseuse-metal/4091-automatic-feeding-for-milling-machine-holzmann-bf25vln.amphtml

@@TinC33 I can't believe this. You say, check the full movement of each axis and buy the gratings one inch longer. Yet, the stupid Banggood, I've sent them 6 emails, asking for the correct size to go with the LCD DRO and they keep repeating the same thing about buying them separately. Of course, I keep telling them, of course I know about buying them separately, but what length, what is the size to go on a Sieg SX2LF? And they emailed again, same shit about "You have to find them..." yada yada yada, again and again. At this rate with Banggood, it will be Christmas soon, WTF? So, do these axis devices plug on all DROs behind or are they only for selected DROs, e.g. your axis doesn't work on mine because yours is push button, while mine is touch screen LCD? Or, are they all the same? My DRO is a YIHAOGD LCD 3 Axis, but came without the axis gratings.

As TimC33 suggests, you need to add four items to your cart. The 3-axis readout is the very first option. After adding this to the cart, you add three of the linear scales. You can combine any sizes of scales you want. I didn't know it was possible to shorten the scales until I saw this (very interesting) video.
