I'm a nurse in Canada, and one of my dreams in my career is to join Doctors Without Borders. I read about women in remote parts of Africa who are mutilated as children, and then it's common for them to be married and become pregnant very young. Because of both FGM and their small bodies, childbirth is extremely difficult and it's common for mother or baby to die or suffer a life-altering injury during the birth. In hospital in the Western world, it is common for women to suffer tearing during childbirth even under ideal circumstances. But here, these tears are quickly sutured and generally heal without issue. In rural Africa, these tears go unrepaired, leading to infection and the wound getting worse over time. Some women have deep tearing from childbirth that make it difficult to hold their urine or bowels, and causes them great embarrassment and isolation. Ever since I read about these womens suffering, it made me want to do something about it. When I pay off my student loans in some years, I want to join a Doctors Without Borders mission to help these women.

And because you comprehend nothing of the issues involved, or what is true and what is false, you will become yet another problem in Africa. FGM goes way deeper than you at present can comprehend so I suggest you do a decade of learning, in that part of Africa, before making your first move.

My husband is from The Gambia, he would tell me that his mum often got chastised for not allowing her daughter to have fgm to done to her. When we had our daughter last year someone still in the Gambia asked him if we’d be bringing her to the Gambia to have it done. It’s crazy that he even got asked that. He obviously said no and that she would never be having it. I’m grateful that he and his family are educated in how wrong it it. My husbands family are very religious and I love it when someone tries to argue with my husband over fgm and say that it’s gods will, when it never says in the Quran girls have to have it done to them. People too often mix their culture in with their religion. When he was growing up in the Gambia he never really knew what fgm was per say he just figured it was similar to when he was circumcised (he was lucky his parents took him to a doctors office. But no painkillers and at the age of 8. Still much better than the traditional way though! So barbaric!) and that it was best for girls, until his sister was born and there was controversy over it. Then when he was older he slept with a girl who had had the fgm procedure done, he told me that until that day he never realised how sad, tragic and horrific fgm really is until then. As he said,” it makes no sense to do it, taking away any pleasure a woman has when making love with her husband, that’s making it a punishment and god doesn’t say to do it.” He told me the story of him and the woman with fgm, she had no feeling, they sat and cried after because she didn’t realise it wasn’t normal and he felt so bad for her. It’s been well over 10 years since he slept with her, yet any time we’ve spoken about it he gets upset, angry and teary eyed, the thought that people wanted to do this to his sister, and even suggested it for our daughter. Change is happening though, conversations are happening and as time goes on the public opinion on the practice is changing, the problem is not enough. The further down in generations you the opinion on fgm changes. Hopefully one day soon, there will be no cases of fgm anywhere in the world, let alone The Gambia or Senegal.

In one of her following books she tells about, how she have cutted her son on the 2th day after birth and that Aleekes genital looks now "straight, clean and lovely". She lost ALL her credibility for us at that point. That's the point why she fights just against fgm. She makes until today not a secred about, that her sexual preferences is by cutted mens and why she want's that mgm is still legal. Specially european womens are shocked about her. Until the turn of the millennium the amputation of the end of the penis by the phimose boys was the operation, to save the life of this kids, but mostly over here knows about the defect by this cutted mens. The sexual handicape and the reduced pleasure by him is simular like by a cutted women. They found alternatives today, childdoctors bring down the cutting rate becose of phimose near down to zero, that the boys have the hole pleasure when they are adults. No mother over here want's that the son have to life with this emasculation, the amputation is the last option to save the boys life. Since then a lot of people over here distance to the theme fgm, becose this fgm womens want still for her own preferences, that the boys/man genital is degraded. For us is fgm and mgm the same shame. We don't make a difference cutting in the backyard or in the Hospital. For us is it childabouse even it's taken legal by a doctor like Indonesia and Malaysia, where doctors in white still cutting girls becose of "healthy" in the Hospital, or USA, where doctors still comes with the "healthy" when they cutting the boys.

Not everyone can be as magnificent in this specific role but we are all capable of educating ourselves and opening the doors of possibility to others; whether they are able to walk through them or need to be shoved. Sadly some will never allow themselves into the next room and remain imprisoned by their own fears and lack of self respect. We must never give up even when it becomes necessary to give ourselves a break. It is the holding of the candle in stillness that allows the flame to remain lit. Whether we are the hands protecting the candle, the wick the flame will exist on, the spark which lights the flame or even the flame itself; these must all come together in order for the energy of light to beckon and illuminate our path.

All farmed animals suffer when slaughtered, but it's out of sight. It's more shocking when seen publicly. I had the same reaction as you, but reality is, it happens every day to thousands of animals.

My daughter has been wanting to be a Muslim, and I was for it but now seeing this imam and some of this practices I am advising her not to.
@marwahussein66626 күн бұрын
This is not an Islamic practice; it is a PRE-Islamic practice of some peoples that, in order not to be abolished with the arrival of Islam, began to be justified using the religion itself (keep in mind that many people there can't even read Arabic). And some peoples, due to the Diaspora, ended up teaching this to others, who also began practicing it (such as some Colombian indigenous peoples, who were taught by descendants of Malês to do this).

Yeah, the lady said “it’s an Islamic obligation” pre or not I guess some still practice.

How backward are this people I am Kenyan and FGM ended in the 80s and not all communities used to practise it, in Kenya now is unlawful and if caught doing it one is jailed. But this women need to be educated, how can she think that an uncircimsiced woman can't give birth... Anyways I am happy to be a Kenyan... But I also believe the countries that are still struggling with this have Islam dominance.

How about male genital mutation? That also needs to stop
@margaretr570121 күн бұрын
Yes, it does, but it's not as life and health altering, as FGM. The man can still have pleasure, his sexuality is not hindered.

Go advocate for it then

But more mercyful that having it done with 7, 8 or even on the day of your wedding... It should NOT been done at all! Never! To nobody! Neither to boys and most certainly not to girls!

The lady who seems to think a baby won't come out unless you are cut is delusional. I've given birth 3 times and I'm not circumcised, all my births were all straight forward and natural. It's barbaric to do this to women and young girls 😢
