So with the seat all the way forward you’ll hit the dash and the steering wheel. How about we try it again with the seat all the way back where your knees are not 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the dash and your head is a reasonable distance from the steering wheel? The legs barely fit between the seat and dashboard. What is impressive is that the headlights and other grill pieces didn’t become projectiles upon impact, they stayed put. I’d rather drive one of these than a new one.

I know it's been a few years but I have 2 things to add to this because a good buddy works in crash testing just like this. 1# Almost always these motors are trash after crashes. These impacts often do damage to the blocks in the frontal testing. 2# Even the ones that do survive are scrapped. GM and most other brands can't sell anything like this for liability reasons and can't be bothered to deal with the legal hoops required to sell these without the liability because 100,000$ of smashed cars is pennies to companies like this.

@@whattheheck1000 Actually yes, the airbags could kill in these situations. If the driver is too close or of small stature the airbags can hit at just the right angle and with enough force to snap the neck. You have to consider that the airbag is basically a small explosive charge contained within the sturdy fabric. My wife had a client that was killed by an airbag in a stationary vehicle while he was working on the interior of the car. To this day no one knows why the airbag deployed.

Whether the airbags would have helped or hurt... hard to say on this one. The dash and steering wheel impacts definitely don't look good, but the dummy measures show that there probably would have only been minor injuries. And with occupants this close to the steering wheel/dash, airbags definitely would have inflicted some injury. I'd say if this test had been at 30 mph / 48 kph instead of 25 mph / 40 kph, the airbags should have definitely gone off. June 18, 2023 12:35 am

This is not an actual NHTSA or IIHS crash test. There, I said it. I'm not sure what the purpose of the video is. Is it supposed to show the safety of the rigid passenger compartment in a crash, or the danger of the airbags not deploying? The video resolution is of a much lower quality than that used by NHTSA or IIHS, and the lighting is poor, although the yellow and black stickers look impressive. This truck must have been going less than 10 miles per hour, or the airbags were somehow disabled. If you think I am wrong, I welcome any and all challenges to my claims.

The Event Data Recorder was analyzed (refer to test report #3) and it appears that the DeltaV, or change in velocity was not enough to trigger the SRS system. The report also indicated that the MIL light was not on and the SRS system was in a readiness state. If you have any further questions, refer to the first test report that includes all applicable data to this specific crash test.
@artistryandmotion
@artistryandmotion 3 жыл бұрын
@@CarPro1993 25 mph was NOT enough velocity to trigger the SRS system? According to NHTSA, "Air bags are typically designed to deploy in frontal and near-frontal collisions, which are comparable to hitting a solid barrier at approximately 8 to 14 miles per hour (web.archive.org/web/20100528074720/www.nhtsa.gov/people/injury/airbags/airbags03/page3.html). If that is true, then either the the airbag was defective, or the the vehicle was, in fact, moving at far less than 25 mph. Which is it?
@CarPro1993
@CarPro1993 3 жыл бұрын
The velocity in question is not just the speed, but Delta-v which the the vehicle's change in velocity over a given time. Looking at that site, they refer to a vehicle striking a solid barrier. This scenario the Suburban is striking a deformable barrier, so not only is there one object absorbing energy, but there is two. This slow reduction of energy is likely why the airbags didn't deploy. You are free to speculate, however NHTSA did not investigate this matter further and I am unable to present you with any more information than what I am aware of. Also know that during this time period, every manufacturer had different SRS logic and this was before the time of Occupant Classification Systems or advanced yaw-rate sensor SRS systems. The Suburban isn't the only vehicle to not deploy its airbags in a 25 Mph moderate overlap crash test.
