Few extra bucks get a gasket maker tube. I'd suggest high temp gasket maker. Appreciate the location of the thermostat. I'm a bodyman watching you with the straight wrench was killing me lol Ratchet wrench is where it's at. That's if my electric ratchet don't fit and can't get a swivel on it lol. I'm spoiled great video thank you!
@Rjj27212 жыл бұрын
That's the wrong gasket maker type bud. Gotta be water pump/thermostat gasket maker. It's coolant(antifreeze) resistant. Normally around $8-10 for a small tube.

I changed one of these n a 96 3.1 Lumina I had and it was not too hard. On my 2000 Century I tried last weekend and quickly found out that this is a PITA. May just go to a shop? Too much crap to remove. My stat is not closing all the way I think.
@Jack51971 Жыл бұрын
Does it really need a gasket since the new thermostat has a rubber gasket around it? When you take out the original thermostat is there old gasket material on the tube that connects to the housing?🤔

It's not possible to put that thermostat in backwards is it ? I've replaced mine and the engine temperature is erratic , sometimes getting very hot.

Thank you for the tutorial. I've changed a few thermostats on a 3.1 engine and they are located in weird spot that isn't mechanic friendly. However , the water pump is a piece of cake.

Park a 2000 Buick Century on a Hill with the front end about 10 inches or more, higher then the back end... When opening coolant system... That will force all the air to the top of the engine... Then with engine running at operating temp. With heater controls set on high... Bleed coolant nut on motor... ware radiator hose goes on motor near thermostat ... A brass threaded plug.... Sticking straight up... Plug is10mm I beleave ... once broker loose... use a light socket, or Tiny vice grips... Because coolant will be hot flowing from the bleeder hole... I used a wrench the first time... And the plug hit the driveway... 4 minutes to find it... And ir burned my fingers also... So mechanic gloves will be nice also... Last... do not over tighten.... Easy to strip hole ... I put car front on ramps works perfect... Also... if water pump goes out... must drain old coolant from engine, radiator, hoses, and coolant tank... Metal shavings from bad water pump bearing .... Will cause new water pump to go bad prematurly ... SUCKS but true.....

The Mechanical standard maintenance on these cars are not too friendly. It's a shame, because my 2004 Century, at 110,000 miles is great. I just use it for groceries and trips to the coffee shop, "Sunday driver". It cruises down the road like a charm.

With all due respect to all of you out there. Before assuming it's the thermostat or water pump. Please be sure all of the air in the coolant system is purged. If air is trapped in the coolant system it will cause it to overheat and not let the coolant flow properly. Just fyi.

WRONG WRONG WRONG. You do NOT have to take off the bottom bolt on the housing. You can clearly see the bolt hole on that side of the housing is slotted, allowing you to remove the top bolt first and then LOOSEN the bottom bolt, not completely remove.

my 2001 century has the same issue, it's overheating after only minutes of driving, wants to go straight to 3/4 temp, and my heater does not work, and all coolant likes to go into resivoir. replaced the water pump about 5 months ago, and all was fine till recent, was ready to replace the radiator but I think I will go with the thermostat first.
@byloecelhigh84675 жыл бұрын
My cars engine gets extremely hot to the touch almost scalding, but the temp gauge needle stays at the middle or right under the middle. The issue I’m having is that the low coolant sign is on but the radiator reservoir is full. Anyone have any idea what could cause the light to turn on. It happens after driving for 1 hr.
@quixotic3174 жыл бұрын
Replace the low coolant level sensor. It's near the radiator on the battery side.

If it's a newer Buick it should have a rubber gasket around the thermostat. Which you don't need a gasket any longer.
@rhondanelson26695 жыл бұрын
Should change a/c thermostat at same time. Don't for get to bleed your coolant valves. You can tell if your thermostat is bad by dropping it into a pot of boiling water and it should open if not its bad.

+David Miller If you think this is bad, try working on a Volkswagon or any other German car. They are a nightmare to work on. You typically have to spend 20 min taking out plastic panels and clips before you can even access the part. Not to mention all of the special tools you need. ie. torx bits, hex bits etc

"Buckwheat say you don't have to take off the throttle body!!! "Not to cool you don't know the difference between a nut and bolt or a Screws!!! Those things in your hand are called bolts not screws!!! Now Because you don't know that you have a bolts in your hand you should put down the tools a step away from the vehicle please!!! can avoid running into these kind of problems is by Inspecting #1 Thermostat rotator joint axle pin #2 The clamps holding the bearing retainer valve in place! Inspect the bolts if they pop off it will damage every thing around it!!! Very important!!!. #3 The 3.7psi of torque to the heli coil sensor inverter hose and fittings!!! Have this torqued every other oil change. will give you faster startups! This takes one minute to do and always over looked 90% of the time!!! So remind the mechanic that's running around like a rooster with out a pecker 95% of the time so you can see were i'm coming from and why things sometimes get over looked!!! Give the dude a little slack!!! These little stupid tips can save you a expensive tow bill. I believe in taking maintenance serious on all my vehicles! Hope this helped!!! It just might be smart thing to highlight this and print my comments out. This can help you bring these things to your mechanic attention!!! Ask him to make it his business to check these things out so you can trust your vehicle. Plus feels great to knowing your car or truck up to date!!! "You belong in your suit.
