Carly is the one who got knocked up in a one-night stand while she was with Tony just so she could keep Tony. Carly is the one who intentionally and manipulatively kept the truth about Michael's paternity from AJ, so he relentlessly pursued that truth and lowered himself to her level. It shouldn't have had to do that for a lifetime. He shouldn't have had to do that at all.

Yes, Pisto30, AJ relentlessly pursued the truth after he found out he was Michael's father, and during Carly's pregnancy when no one except AJ and Carly knew that they had slept together, as soon as he found out she was pregnant mid 1997. So no one prompted or put AJ up to pursuing the truth because no one else knew, until AJ finally confided in Keisha just before the baby was born. AJ had conversations with Keisha and with people from his AA meeting, etc, talking about how much he wanted to be a father. You posed the question "before or after he was already a year old?" After. AJ thought Michael was his nephew for a year. Easy to think he didn't care that much about Michael after Michael was born and only visited his "nephew" at Edward prompting, but AJ's intent prior to Carly landing in PC was making amends to Jason and trying to be a good brother. People take Edward's words and put them in AJ's mouth. AJ told Edward more than once that his motives for connecting with Michael were different from Edward's, but sure, he did what his grandfather asked him to do, I'd do that too, after all it's my grandfather. So AJ kept trying to connect with Jason and his new "nephew." When Robin told AJ that Michael was AJ's son, one of the things AJ said was, he would have done everything differently if he had known, he wouldn't have pursued ELQ. AJ's original plan was to leave PC. So Edward could have dangled ELQ all he wanted.

AJ should never have lowered himself to a criminal level. He could have won without doing that. But I can't help but see that a man who hires an arsonist to burn down a warehouse is willing to do anything to have his son with him, so there's no question that AJ wants to be Michael's father. I don't know what I would have done when push came to shove with Sonny. AJ didn't have a lot of time to think. I might have thought that being accused of arson even if it didn't stick might hurt my chances at visitation or custody. And realized I can't fight a criminal like a criminal. Yeah, AJ signed, but he didn't run away, disappear, party like it's 1999, or hang himself in the attic. He kept trying to pursue it legally. Even the one attempt he made to see Michael got AJ hung in a meat locker, so AJ wasn't going to win legally, all the money in the world wasn't going to accomplish that.
