The F350 started running rough with no power, stalling and hard start. This is what I found and how I fixed those issues. Still not sure if the original problem is fixed yet or not.

Rats chewed my wires going to Under valve cover gasket wiring harness. I should have known by the best in V of the engine. So…lately, rats have eaten my 7.3, my cat excavator, and my moms buick suv. And my cousins combine. It’s gonna be a bad winter

The ICP was probably the problem to begin with, the other issues are common to this engine but shouldn't have cause the rough idle and stalling. Good video, nice work...

If there's any oil in the ICP connection, I'd change it just to be ahead of it. My injectors are throwing codes and I'm certain it's a dead short from a chafed harness. No big deal. The glow plugs didn't seem to be doing their job so I did a test on the glow plug relay (mine is a 2000 F350 and has the solenoid style relay) and found it wasn't doing crap. $25 for a new one, so that was easy. I'm doing the wire check/repair this weekend when I change my oil and fue filter. Getting ready for winter. I have 392,000 on mine with 100k on a rebuilt transmission and rear end. Just went through al of the rear u-joints and hanger bearing and have the front drive shaft out to rebuild. A lower ball joint, front drive axle u-joints and hub bearing assemnlies will have me tired but ready for another 200k. These engines are amazing. If they could build the rest of the truck as durable as this engine, they would last forever and Ford would put itself out of business. Semper Fi

It’s bad to rev her like that isn’t it? Mine is starting a bit rough in the cold, and then it runs great, but once it’s up to full temperature , she idles rough and dies at stoplights. My engine wiring harness is a mess, and I havnt even seen the computers side of the 40pin connector.... I’d imagine it’s shorted badly. I am hoping it runs poorly up to tempt simply because the oil thins out an allows the shorting to happen.

DG. I had poor cold weather starting, and a nasty shudder through the steering wheel for the first 5 miles or so, then it would go away instantly. The fix? New injectors and valve cover gasket/harness. 30% less Diesel rattle too.

helpful video! Im having troubles with my 01' 7.3 in an excursion with it shutting off on me while driving. first time it happened I changed the camshaft positioning sensor. second time as well. now Ive done it 8 times and more often. people talk about wire harness issues and you just proved it. I guess I'll crown around and unplug and clean and inspect wires fro rub marks. Hope to find some instead of nothing. could just do a new wiring harness but will try this look over first.

I had the same issue with the valve cover gasket rubbing the wire harness and the D-tech Ron fix worked for about 7 months but then it stalled after coming off the freeway the other morning, then started again fine. I’ll check my inner gasket harness, thanks.

On the left side engine harness bracket if you bend the tab up that the harness side into that will bring the harness up on the body side. Tape the harness up on the body side to the wire connector after the wires are repaired.

I went thru 3 cam position sensors in 2 months. My code reader and a commercial shop code reader both agreed, but it turned out to be the fuel pump needed replacing. Just sayin'. Archoil 6200 and 9100 make a huge difference in 7.3 engines. My injectors have 300,000 miles on them and still pass a buzz test.

i have an 02 F250 with the 7.3 and although i dont have this issue, you did answer other questions that i had. I was curious as to t\where the harness connection was so i can do an Ohms test and you answered that for me. I have also replace the ICP, IPR and cam sensors so far and it still starts but dies or stalls after being driven so its definitely time to look at harness and wear spots before the IDM is replaced. Good video!.. I now subscribed.

I've looked at a few of these videos trying to prepare for the job ahead. Yours is definitely the most thorough I've seen so far and gave me some things to look for. My issue is intermittent and I'd rather not replace things unless I have to (if it ain't broke don't fix it) but I'll definitely take a good look at the plugs and check the wires for any wear. Mine started after the truck sat for a couple years as it needs a new transmission. It's showing glow plug and injector codes, and then the glow plug code will go away after clearing it, and then appear again a few days later. It definitely feels like a short or a loose plug, and it's like one injector is working and then not working. crossing fingers I don't have to dig this deep, but it doesn't seem like that big of a deal even if I do. Also I think my passenger side valve cover is leaking, so I may have to dig in there anyway.

You couldn't be more correct. After these repairs I checked the oil and it was down about two gallons. filled it back up and it was fine for a long time. My truck is a 2001 f350 7.3 and its sat for a month until today when I finally got a new driveshaft in, I started it up no problem (about 25 degrees here in ohio) and it ran great at idle for about 25 minutes, well I decided to take it around the block to check if my driveshaft was all good and literally made it 2 blocks and it wanted to fall on its face, no power I had to hold it to the floor to limp her home, it sounded like a tractor at this point. I let it idle like that for a few minutes before I shut it off and it was blowing out some smoke. Now im paranoid its something major. I will check that wire tomorrow and plug under the valve cover. I also had perfect oil level on my dipstick before I even started it so I wouldn't think that would be it. Thanks for the video it was really helpful.

Recently I bought a 96 7.3 from Florida. The truck doesn’t have any rust on it. It sat in Michigan cold for about a month. Long story short, could not start the truck today. Thought the batteries were weak. Put in new batteries, added diesel 911 and 5 gallons of fresh diesel. Diesel is not gelled up in the filter bowl but the diesel almost looks white or like coconut milk. Got the truck started, let it run for 10 minutes. The engine seemed to run louder than usual. When I try to drive the truck it barely has any power. I put the pedal to the metal and the rpm only got to 1.25. The truck only got to 10-15 mph on full throttle. Then it completely died. Started the truck again and it would die after idling hard for 2-3 seconds. I tried this for 5 times and gave. What could be the issue and how do I fix it?

Hey bud have you ever encountered your 7.3 in limp mode. My truck stayed in limp mode after I drove it around on 4High for 3 days. The weather made the roads a bit bad but nothing 4×4 could not handle. Now do to the torque power of these trucks a limp mode is set during 4×4 but now that I'm in 2 wheel drive it's still on the limp mode. Any ideas?

I’m currently not getting any engine codes and when I went to use my small OBDM scan tool it would only give me a green light so I hope the forscan program will give a little more info. Any pointers is appreciated.

Yea, beware Dorman parts, I refuse to use any hard parts or electrical parts from them. I will use plastic trim pieces, but they won't leave you stranded by the side of the road when they fail. I would never go that far without checking the glow plugs, it's too easy to check them, test light from 12 volt to plug, light comes on, good plug. When I saw these diesels with the in gasket plugs, I quit the dealership, I had already lost count of the 6.9/7.3 engine replacements or more honestly, I quit counting after the 500th motor. I drive a V-10 Dodge, and would never own a diesel, the maintenance costs are way too high. Take note, when it dies, sell it, as in "Die-Sell" the answer is contained in the name. My V-10 is easy to fix, strong as an Ox, gets decent mileage, and doesn't smell bad either. When I worked for Ford, I discovered ear protection was necessary, and I get massive headaches from diesel exhaust. I hate diesels, and I point and laugh at people when their diesel craps out by the side of the road.

Harness Electrucal short circuit? Wow you should perhaps watch some vids to learn how to do what your doin? Just FYI I have been driver and the mechanic on my 7.3's for 23 years. You as all 7.3 owners would do well to make your oil changes count by taking the significant part of a day to let the oil drain and simply look around and be proactive about everything in the engine compartment and beneath the truck and in your spare time read and watch vids. A few days a month will soon turn in to one and then hopefully just takin a rest watchin oil drain. Yall whove pretty much always had new, simple, or other types of vehicles would do well to consider these trucks are not designe# to be daily drivers without trailers. Lots of extra work and knowledge is a total benefit to old vehicles HEUI and the like. The "Wait to Start" is an idiot light. You might w!n to consider the injector firing on a glow plug will only serve to burn it up more quickly. The glow plugs run for 2 minutes despite the idiot light telling you otherwise. IMHO your "if your powerstroke blank" vids should be saved and perhaps you could educate yourself on just what your speaking about?
