This is really more of an overview and driving impressions of the LS400. If you would to see a video of me going in depth about interior quality and etc, check out an old review of mine where I filmed a 99 LS400 which is essentially the same car. • 1999 Lexus LS400 Start...

I bought the 2000 LS400 about eight months ago. I paid 3,100 for it.. I think I got a good deal but the brakes seem to be a little too sensitive or more than what I'm used to... You have to take it easy cuz it seems like it goes from not enough to too much very fast..

I bought a 1992 LS400 in 1999 from an elderly gentleman who was getting a new LS. With currently 350,000 km. Other than timing belt, water pump, belt pulley bearings, replaced 2 driver front window motors, upper and lower ball joints mounts and alternator, it never given me any problem. It's very easy to maintain. Still drives the same as in 1999. This is really one of the best and most reliable car ever built.

I bought my 1998 LS400 in 2001 from a dealer as a lease return for $44K with 42000 miles. It had air shocks and navigation system (on the hard drive), upgraded chrome rims and original Lexus sound system that is so much better than Nakamichi or ML upgraded ones. Now 18 years later, the car has 132500 miles, I had to change eventually air shocks for a stock shocks, just because it was too expensive to replace them. I had changed 2 batteries (original Lexus one worked for 9! years), 2 times breaks, every now and then synthetic oil (sticker shows I was due to replace it 4 years ago?), this year I had to replace power steering pump that was slowly leaking, and tires. That is it. It never broke other than when a suspension air bag blew while I was driving on a hwy., which was leaking slowly for some time. Once I had rear ended someone, and insurance wanted to total it, but I declined and fix it. There is no words to describe this car other than "awesome". When I was in the shop, the shop owner told me that he will buy it fron me any time. The other day I parked at the store, and security guard flagged me and asked me if I wanted to sell it, I said no (LOL). He went on to tell me how much he loves it, and is sad that he sold his a while back. I have 2 other Lexuses both 2005, LS430 and LX470 that my daughter and wife driving, but I prefer this one. No desire to own a new car, as this one has everything that I need and then some. An absolutely amazing vehicle!

Great car. I love mine. I applied Shin-Etsu silicone grease to all of my door and window seals. Made a huge difference in blocking out those higher-frequency outside noises. Also replaced my engine mounts and transmission mount (which were completely separated at 130,000 miles). That made an enormous amount of difference in engine isolation and transmission engagement. Also installed new rear control arms, and new strut rod bushings. Slapped new wheels on and coilovers and the car is now perfect with a more grounded ride, but with a small trade-off on overall smoothness of ride (less float). Also, that loose corner lens should pop in to place with some pressure. It has a little metal prong behind it that snaps into a hole on the fog light lens. If it doesn't want to pop in, back the screw out on the lens, then try to pop it into place and put the screw back in.

@aronharrington
@aronharrington 6 жыл бұрын
MERCEDESBENZS600 S500 The starter can cost like $1,000 to replace. Also, on the 1999 and 2000 models, if the power tilt function on the steering wheel goes out, you will need to have the steering wheel motor replaced. On the 1998 and older models, they used a worm/gear system for the tilt, which you can fix with a zip tie. But yea, timing belt is a very important service to have done every 90K miles or every 8 years, *whichever comes first*. Also if you get one with the Premium package, you get auto-leveling HIDs. Make sure they work properly!

I got a '95 ( previous model ), same colour option and I'm only the second owner. 54 k miles only and mint. Keeping it original though I've updated the stereo. I polish and wax it a couple of times a year and it sits in the garage every night. Still getting the thumbs up occasionally which is nice . Surprised that the air suspension option still works a treat and doesn't make a sound . Quietest car I've ever owned, get it serviced by my friend Dan, who happens to work for Lexus.

I would be honored to possess the original example that challenged the status quo of luxury cars. This vehicle delivered fit to finish smoothness that successfully blended the elegance of Mercedes and the performance of BMW. Even though Infiniti rolled the pinball along the trunklines and doors in its commercials, Lexus could balance champagne glasses on its running engine. I think I’d try that too : )

Great video, thanks for posting. I used to own one of these fantastic cars. My 1998 LS400 had 260,000 miles when I sold it. I was sorry to see it go as it was a pleasure to drive and a reliable workhorse; reliability is essential if you are self-employed like me. The LS600h and GS450h have a very small boot/trunk, so that put me off buying these models. With good memories of my father's trusty W124 Mercedes, I later bought a 2016 W213 Mercedes E220d SE, impressed by its lovely dual screen display but the Merc suffered from several quality and electronic gremlins and doesn't ride and handle anywhere as nicely as the LS400. I agree that modern cars are too complicated so it's not surprising they have more problems that can be fixed by the main dealer only...but no doubt that's a deliberate part of the new business model.

Reliability at it's finest when it comes to luxury vehicles, Mercedes S class and BMW 7 series Audi A8 are in the graveyard at this type of mileage most of them, because owners are not going to pay for the high repair cost out of warranty at the dealership, while the Lexus keep on coasting along. The Hyundai Genesis has taken some tips for their Genesis Brand. They are next on the list for high reliability for luxury vehicles.

slim Doc's the 98-00 ls400 were better than the 430s. The 430s were even softer, slower, n bigger. The 400 is def more of a drivers car than the 430. Just food for thought.

Ls. If you want the best ride ever go LS. Back then it really made a difference in what you get. It's like riding on clouds. I have a 2002 ls430 that is insane. I also own a 95 Mercedes s500. Same type of ride.

@petescarport

@@SourGrey the ls430 and any other LS model (400, 460, 500) are all v8 models. This is the top class for Lexus. The best part about the 430 is it gets almost the same gas mileage as the v6 that comes in the GS standard ( there is a v8 option). The v8 model gives you more horse power but mostly more torque.

@@SourGrey anything before 2003 when they introduced the 6 speed closed transmission. The prior transmission was indestructible. It's the same transmission that was in the million mile car you see all over KZbin. I'm a fan of the ls400 but the 430 has more modern features and style.

Watson Lee a lot of the features or standard equipment you see standard in today’s generic grocery getter cars were exclusive standard equipment or expensive options on luxury cars of 20+ years ago. For example a 1992 Mercedes S-Class had power folding mirrors. Now you can get it in the highest trim Kia Rio

So this, a 1990's RWD Cadillac Fleetwood, or a Lincoln Town Car? I'm willing to bet the build quality and longevity of this car is better. But the Ford Panther platform cars are basically like nokia phones, and the Chevrolet small-block V8s in the GM full-size boats can basically run forever.
@BPoweredLove

Nobody is going to take your bet, my friend. EVERYBODY knows that the LS400 absolutely blows away the cars you named in terms of virtually everything, particularly in terms of reliability and build quality. I see them every single day driving around where i live. Those other cars you name, no. Very rare to see one driving around.
