Nice van! What most don't know is the fact that in this V 280, the complete drivetrains were being delivered from VOLKSWAGEN! Yes, that is true, it has VW's so-called VR 6 engine (15 degree inline) and even the electronically controlled VW 4 speed-automatic from the VW Multivan T 4! So it is the 2-valve 128 KW/ 174 mhp version of this engine, code AAA, which has been designed to be compact enough to fit in many VW cars, all of which those days had transverse engine, front-wheel-drive layouts (or 4x4). Mercedes only had (with the exception of the A-Class) solely longitudinally mounted engines, that wouldn't fit in the FWD V-Class! And since there was already a joint-venture with VW in the van lineups, MB Sprinter/ VW LT, it was cheaper to carry over the VW drivetrain! You can tell the difference by its iconic engine sound, which might almost remind of an V 8 growl - but never worry, both engine and gearbox are excellent!

my mam had a viano back in 2002 it was nice like this one but no body kit or tinted windows, never had a problem then got the new shape (2004) and it was so badly build and after trade and standards got involved it got scrapped at 18months old due to been unsafe then 10 years my dad bought a 2001 vito and it was good on fuel but it rusted like hell and was fairly slow that was quickly replaced by a 95 nissan largo which is 10x better :) but tho mercs rust like hell we went to see about 5 before my dad got his and all were rotten or had major parts replaced cause of rust and the plastics seem abit cheap and rattle alittle (but its mainly a commercial) if you want a luxury people carrier or day van get a nissan largo or elgrand they are much better in quality and such even can get 4x4 versions

I'm assuming the imported lives in the U.S. or similar where cars newer than 25 years old cannot be imported and it's being stored for however long they have to wait.

In Europe this is the V class/Viano, I don't know what's the difference between the two, but they have different names, and it's pretty much the only luxury people carrier that you can buy. I don't even know why Toyota didn't offer luxury versions for the Hiace, or why they didn't sell the Granvia/Regius here, this car would have been the only one to compete with

How can you tell...? Apparently these models run quite hot as there's not much room in engine bay. Mine always runs in the 90's and above which is a concern mostly.

viano? i was reading the title thing (what the hell is a Mercedes Viano) until i saw the pic and recognized it. here in the Netherlands it's called Mercedes Vito

Wikipedia says that Vito was the version with the cargo space in the back. Viano was a version with seats in the back.

apparently this car has 3 names. Vito is the cargo van, and Viano/V Class are the passenger versions. Not sure what's the difference between the V class and the Viano, but they have different names for some reason

It's reading around 90 degrees. That's fine. Most engines are just below 100 give or take. I think this one is weird because the operating temp is not right at the 50% mark like most cars.

@@PacificCoastAuto @PUmP k1n V280 standard operating temp I believe is 90º. Fans kick in at 92-97º which is a little higher than normal everyday cars around 70-80º. Heard from many VW v6 VR6 experts that these engines operate best at 97-102º which seems a lil' crazy to me. My 98 model has gone through 2 fatigued radiators already.

The facelifted versions were actually quite reliable. The biggest issue on these is and will always be rust.

The engine bay was washed at the port and after that, it would not start. Was perfect before that.
