I had to do deliveries for my workplace a year or so back while another employee was on medical leave. Driving a typical Chevy van, I had a payload of heavy steel in the back. Coming down a hill, I had to slam on the breaks when a car ran a light. I was able to stop, but the load didn't. It kept moving until it slammed into the back of my seat. There was no barrier between the back and the front. It was absolutely jarring. It cracked the bottom of my seat. It killed my back.

@Daumex8 жыл бұрын
They meant a 1 tonne cargo is a typical payload, not sand.
@vistron8888 жыл бұрын
Nor would 1 ton of anything be typical be it sand or other materials. There would be a substantial difference in damage on what you're carrying even if the weight was the same as a whole.
@randy1098 жыл бұрын
You are right. I've worked with Contractors and hauled everything imaginable. Once I shoveled about 800 pounds of decorative rock into a nearly new Ford 1/2 ton pickup. Almost drug the tail and could have busted the suspension quite easily. A full TON of sand would break the back of almost any full sized pickup or van. "Ratings" are sometimes quite wishful thinking in the real world.

a good van driver knows that the load needs to be against the barrier and Always needs to be strapped down, i knew from the start when they put in that big bag of sand that would happen... if they put the bag more towards the barrier or against the barrier ther would be more weight on the frontwheels and that would press the nose down a bit more and than you had a bit less chance for the van to override the passat.. but still it would push the passat back like this because of the totall mass of the van + load...

The fact that the Ford van did well didn't surprise me, most Fords seam to be ahead of other American cars. I have a 1998 Ford Windstar and I watched a small overlap test of one and it fared better then some new cars. They didn't even test for things like small overlap in 98! To be fair though, the F150 pickup did terrible at small overlap until 2004 so I'm not going to be a blind fan boy and say that all Fords are safe. Doubt anyone will know what I am talking about anyway though since I am an United Statesian (this is why we just use American) commenting on a British show.

I know how unsafe they are. I had a had on collision between my Citroen Berlingo and a Renault Espace last year at just 30mph. I still have pain in my shoulder after a year. The worse part is that the airbags in the Espace were deployed while none of them were in my less than 1 year old van. The A pillar was completely deformed and the dashboard was cracked in half. The doors couldn't be opened and I had to get out through the broken windows. The driver in the Espace just openen his door and got out easily. I don't want to imagine what would've happened if that was at 50mph instead of 30mph. Vans are very very unsafe.

Can't believe i'm watching this after being rear-ended by a 3 half tonne van, that's why HGV driver's put pallets at the rear of the cab as a buffer...

most vans have bulkheads and lots of tie down points. lorry drivers do that so the forklift guys dont fuck the trailer too much

it would be very interesting to see comparison of crash test e.g. regular Ford Focus vs. Ford Focus rally version reinforced with steel tube frames (as seen at WRC cars). If we really and seriously want to set a relevant rating (EURO NCAP is not), a top secured (5 star rated as most secured cars regarding crash tests) cars ought to be only cars with deformation zones as todays newest 5star car models, but indoor reinforced with steel tubes as WRC cars have. Please, if someone knows about crash test of such rally car, share it. Thank you.

The problem with the safety of a roll-cage for everyday road use is that its only safer when used with other safety devises i.e helmet, racing seat and harness, fire retardant suit. Otherwise your bare head could hit the metal bars, you won't be able to escape the vehicle after a crash without assistance and jaws of life will not be as effective when the rescuers try to extricate you. But yes, there could be a compromise, where the roll cage is designed to work with side/curtain air-bags when no helmet is worn, doorways are clear of tubes etc. Vans and SUV would benefit the most with their roll-over risk and poor crash test results. Whatever safety measures are introduced, driver training and education is still the most important and effective aspect, something, as a motorcyclist, I cannot stress enough.

I think the tubeframes are most important in roll overs. While in a full stop head on crash like this (that almost never happens in a rally, because all people drive in the same direction), tubeframe alone doesn't do much, because the biggest problem usually is the high forces and high acceleration acting on people. In that way tube frame might even do worse, because crumble zones in modern vehicles make the crash softer like they are supposed to do. Rally drivers also wear a very good helmet, they have a special suit and gloves in hands and much better seat belts and seat than in a regular car. Rally drivers also sit closer to the middle of the car and lower. The car could be made stronger inside without tubeframes too, simply by increasing the material thickness, using stronger steel quality or perhaps using a totally different material. And modern cars are much stronger from the body than old cars were. :)
