How's that? There's no proof here that the car actually has 40k miles on it. Wizard is taking the customer's word for it, unless there are some recent shop papers or a Carfax that has the correct mileage recorded.

@@OMGWTFLOLSMH 6 year old tires with no wear, rusty brakes, condition of the interior (especially the seats) and other wear signs tell a lot. Sure someone could fake it but that's a lot of work to go to for what? Bragging rights that you got a Jag to last?

@@OMGWTFLOLSMH You can tell by going over a car whether 440k miles is correct or whether it's more like 40k, so he really doesn't have to take the customers word on it. One of these cars would never even make it to 440k, not looking like this one, so that's out as even a possibility. You can usually even tell 50k vs 100k by just looking at the car.

I have a 2003 XK8 that looks just like this. Black with black top but I have the Apollo Wheels instead. No supercharger so it's not particularly fast, but it looks beautiful and I love taking my wife out to dinner in it. Got it for 10 grand in Ohio and I have a friend and a local shop to help me with basic upkeep and maintenance. Knock on wood, has not bad to own maintenance so far. And I get compliments about it almost every day.

FYI one other LEGAL alternative is that you can get a cluster reset to 0 IF you put a label on the driver's side door jamb indicating the original mileage AND indicating cluster was replaced or repaired. This is legal as long as an effort was made to document the car's actual mileage. I might also add that KZbinr jeffescortlx does cluster repairs all the time and he has an absolute gift with a soldering iron. I would definitely let him take a crack at that "cat's" cluster.

@@JaguWireLife Yeah, I became a Jag man from 2000-on for that reason. I live in Western Washington and wish I could run across a guy just like you in the Seattle Area. Had a 2004 XJ8 for a while. Liked it. But the biggest disappointment was the fact that when the XJ8/R generation changed to the X350, leaving the top speed for U.S. versions of it at about 150 mph as for the previous X308 XJ8s was 110% out of the question as they became electronically controlled to a measly 121 mph. Same was done to the non-supercharged S-Types. And it got even worse in 2006 when the XJR also got restricted to the same 121 mph, confirmed in another You Tube video at the proving grounds. I don't care what anyone says, there's no reason for that. It is not a Lincoln Town Car nor a Cadillac. The worst part of that is that there would never be any getting rid of such speed restrictions to unlock the awesome Jag's potential. But there will always be such support for any German or Japanese car even if it's as old as pre-2000. So, I think my next Jag will either be an S-Type R w/ 400+ horsepower or just a pre-2003 base S-Type 0-60 in 8 flat but was still able to do 140 in U.S. specs.

Several years ago I was driving my X308 XJR on the motorway when the engine died and the dash cluster lit up like a Christmas tree with random messages like the ones on that XKR cluster, this was accompanied by a burning smell and a bit of smoke. The car was recovered to a Jaguar specialist who after struggling to find the fault tracked it down to the J-gate gear selector and associated electrical components. These were replaced and the car has been as good as gold since.

Called AAA to bring it home and turned out to be BOTH fuel pumps. Not a bad job to replace except for disconnecting the fuel lines at the bottom of the tank. My XJR did exactly the same thing when I left it for 18 months, no electric fuel pumps like sitting, especially if you use E10 fuel, & especially if you leave it with the tank near empty, as it exposes the pumps to air which results in corrosion. By the way, the series XJ`s had tanks in the rear wings, not behind the seat, so are easier to work on (but are much more exposed in the event of a rear end crash), it wasnt till the XJ40`s that the tank went against the seat.

I'm not sure but I have heard that the odometer reading is not only stored in the instrument cluster but in another module as well. So it can be found out if someone tampered with the cluster only in order to change the mileage. Maybe the reading here has still got the correct numbers.

Most places that offer cluster repair will match mileage to the car. Cool car Wizard i love Jags except for the the newer F Pace it looks like a Porsche and Maserati had a kid together it just doesn't stand out to me when i think of jags but thats my opinion. I personally again this is my opinion prefer the vintage ones like Hoovies E type because they get meaner as they get older. Speaking of that car that seal where they leak from thats normal just the nature of the beast my XK140 leaks like that i just throw cat litter on top of a piece of cardboard and slide it under the car. Also they're supposed to take a lot of oil not because of the size of the pan because they raced some of them along with mine. It still blows my mind how much oil my XK140 takes 14Q. And speaking of my 140 heres an example on why i prefer the vintage ones. I have a 1956 XK140 roadster 4 speed manual all original untouched car millage, paint, numbers matching everything original, it even came with the original 50s toolkit in the trunk when we bought it in 2002. More on that in a bit. As old as it is it still preforms great and still has all of its 210 horses and even gets 23mpg on the highway and 18 in city. Its no trailer or garage princess just a great driver. I love that car because of the sentimental value it has for me it was my first Jag an also my first collector car. It was this car i learned how 2 wrench on cars at 9 years old in 2002 after my dad bought it off of a used car lot and i still have it to this day. I think it was listed for 25k for it. But i rode in my friends 2005 1/3 XKR black cat edition and that was a blast. If i could find one of that car would it would parked next to my XK140

Is that double fuel pump also standard on the X308 Supercharged? I noticed that an XJ frontside, has an under protection plate, but the XK doesn't have it.
@andrewhaywood531
@andrewhaywood531 Жыл бұрын
All SC jags of this era had two fuel pumps. The second kicks in under hard acceleration. Seems like the XK should also have a front protector, probably missing because the trans cooler is exposed and should not be.

car wizard if the car’s computer keeps track of the mileage like fords do the owner can have the dmv do the mileage discrepancy on paper, and the mileage can be sent back with that information. Most places won’t do it though, because of the legal reasons as you mentioned but it can be done on paper unless it’s exempt in your state from age then you’re kind of screwed good luck

To answer your question about the odometer adjustment, it can be legally done IF AND ONLY IF you can get a certified odometer statement from your local DMV. I don't know what the procedure for that is in Kansas but if you are able to get the correct mileage for the vehicle and you are absolutely certain that you can do that then it can be done. I remember Volvo actually had a genius way of addressing this issue back in the day, and what they did was they had something like an OBD I system under the hood that would blink to tell you exactly how many miles are on the car in the event that your odometer stopped working. My friend Robert Spinner (aka. RobertDIY on KZbin) has a video on this procedure. Then you would have to provide the odometer repair shop with a certified odometer statement from the DMV indicating the correct mileage for the vehicle in question. Not sure if Jaguar has anything similar to this in their cars, but that’s the route you would need to go if you wanted to address this issue in a legal manner. Hope this helps!

I love my 2000 XKR! I've had it for over 7 years. More reliabe (better quality) then my S-Type R. If I was the owner of this car, I would have the 440,000 cluster rebuilt. Anyone who knows these cars can tell you that car hasn't been used nearly that much. If he gets a cluster with 140,000 miles, he won't get a good price when it comes time to sell. Really nice car. Just not a daily driver unless you don't carry more than one person or anything longer that 3 feet. I try to drive mine a least every 10 days so it doesn't suffer from sitting issues like this one. If your's has electrical gremlins, its probably just a low (expensive) battery.

It is not illegal to reprogram mileage under some circumstances. You can go to jail or $30k fine if you are a dealer and/or purposely change miles for profit. As long as you note it and keep the car for yourself and 10years+ age you can have it at any miles but you can ask local dmv for more info. I have done it once.

wait... why is it illegal to even touch the mileage on the odomoete? It is illegal to change the odometer on a car in France to pass it off as something it's not (mostly reducing the mileage), but it's not illegal to adjust a replacement odometer to the correct mileage of the car. if you get an odometer with a different mileage it is legal to adjust it to the correct mileage of the vehicle, this why this feature exist in the first place.

The US laws seem to be very strict about odometer readings. I once had to change a cluster for a 1998 Cadillac Seville STS in Finland. I asked around if it would be possible to get the original reading and found several shops willing to do it if I just proved it was the original odometer reading. Later I also found out that it isn’t illegal to change to odometer reading. You can get any odometer reading for 100€ from shady shop. However if you purposely roll back the odometer to get financial benefit in a car sale it’s a mild fraud. It’s estimated that a significant amount of imported cars have odometer rolled back. Unlike original Finnish cars, they don’t have history records of odometer readings in yearly inspections. The best indication is usually missing service records.

Wizard, the FBI might be help. When Ford had to change the vin tags on some cars that were built in one model year but were a different model year, the FBI supervised the work. Maybe there is a regulation regarding the repair of an odometer that can be implemented to return the Jags odometer to a correct reading. I recently had the instrument cluster in my 2013 Mustang replaced. It was ordered with the current mileage of my car on the new unit.

This car has great style and I can use and enjoy that alone. Speed? Anyone out there ever rolled a car? Well try it sometime at only 100mph I thought I was invincible once. If you want to drive fast, then I suggest you practise every day at the speed you want to drive at.
