I bought a Sherwood green '97 XK8 new. Normally-aspirated version of this car. What a dream it was to drive. Late one night I took it to 130 on the I-5 from Seattle to the Canadian border and even as a convertable (top up) it was stable, sure-footed, and civilized. My wife (thankfully) slept through it all. There was more power in reserve but I was too chicken. Sold it a month shy of the warranty expiration. The water pump had failed at 25,000 miles and was (obviously) covered under warranty, but the dealer told me if it had been an out-of-pocket repair it would have run me around $3000. As much as I love the XK, I would never own one without a warranty. Good luck, Hoovie!
@Oldbmwr100rs2 ай бұрын
And the prices of repairs on these cars were ridiculous like that, but really the car wasn't that hard to work on! I've done a full timing chain upgrade on the 4.0, replaced a 4.2 V8 someone ran out of oil, and serviced many including the two i owned. I just can't understand why the dealers were so insane with the pricing, and for no reason really. These cars are not difficult to care for and repair. Parts are available as well.

The guy running it asked me how comfortable I felt driving and when I said "Very" he said "Turn the corner and put your foot to the floor until I tell you to let up." Yes!!! The AJ-V8 SC Jags from this era are such cheap hidden jems! Well-built, reliable, quick, comfortable, and cheap to maintain. The badge scares a lot of people off, but the Ford era of Jaguar led to some truly well-built vehicles from them. The Jag 4.2s (and 4.4s in some Land Rover models) with the revised timing chain components are bulletproof and can easily reach 300k+ miles! (The 4.0s can too as long as the chain guides are replaced with the revised design from the 4.2 and 4.4s). The Nikasil problem was only for the initial run of 4.0 engines. The later years of the AJ-V8 don't suffer the liner issue, and your 2003 is well clear of that. Something you MUST DO, especially at that mileage, is GET THE ZF TRANSMISSION SERVICED. Many of these cars end up having transmissions fail because Jaguar claimed that the fluid was "lifetime" and never set a service interval, hence why many of these Jags end up at the junkyard due to failed transmissions. Get the fluid changed, pan replaced, and have the mechatronics seals redone while you're in there. The ZF box is a very reliable transmission, but old, dirty fluid kills them in short order. Fun fact: The superchargers on all the SC models are Eaton and are easily rebuilt for cheap. The ones on the 4.2 models are the exact same unit used on the 03-04 Terminator Cobras.

I remember the Fuego when it was new. It's actually more attractive than I remember it being. Probably because the new cars now are all blob shaped.

I've owned 3 Jags - a 2004 X Type, a 2015 XF (with the supercharged V6), and a 2018 XE. I loved them all; particularly the XF. I never had a problem with them, except the (Ford era) X Type, when the ABS braking went out at 93,000 miles. Sadly, my local Jag dealer sold a total of 60 cars in 2023. This dealer was the first US Jag dealer, starting selling them here in 1938. I've stuck with the dealer, though; I've gotten two Land Rovers from them.

Please do not "movie car" up that XKR, that car is in unbelievable shape. It would be so much worse than the mild amount of "boy racer" going on already. If it was a roached one sure, but not this one. Interested to see what those Jaguar center caps look like on those wheels

"It's a Jaaaaggg... " just like Jeremy, closely followed by loose clamps underneath... 😆 I love the turbine-like whine of the supercharger! Just as they did with the turbocharged Trans Am back in 1981 or so, Buick spent time and money on the intake system to silence the whine of my Eaton M90 supercharger on the last generation 3800 Riviera... However, I would definitely put a new set of factory springs in that thing.

@@jaromor8808 I gotchu, I'll record a little video. When I looked a little closer one is a XKR so I am definitely thinking about saving one of them.
Beautiful XKR! Last winter we bought an S-Type R with that same powerplant and it's a blast! It's a royal pain finding a shop around here to work on a Jag. The Wizard's garage is probably about 4 hours west of us and I might wind up having to take it to him one of these days. These are definitely uncommon here in the Ozarks.

Jaguar needs a full do over, probably be better of if one of the big German brands bought it,better than Stellantis or GM. Or maybe they should sell of the Rnage Rover brand as its still reputable
@deadprivacy2 ай бұрын
Its kind of tatas little toy now. They will probably get it right in the end. Its the furst Indian owned premium car brand, they wont let that go. And despite the more than plentiful issues that hound the range rovers especially. People do still buy them. Electric is probably a good idea due to the problems mainly being the engines. Them turning into an appliance repair company in totalis is probably a very good idea from their perspective at this point. Or maybe not considering that track record on electronic security... Its kind of funny in a way, as where jaguar started its relationship with internal combustion engines was a bargain brand, a knock off of bentley. And it ended as a luxury ripoff one.
@robinjohn79862 ай бұрын
Tata Group is big enough to keep it as long as they want. They revived Land Rover, and they could do the same with Jaguar. I don't see any reason for them to sell any of it given the size of the Tata group.

Range Rover is a model, not a brand.

I remember what happened when BMW bought Rover (RIP). The last thing Jag needs is to be owned by one of the German companies. They'd be best off back with Ford honestly.

I spontaneously bought a XF-S off the floor back in 2016 and was amazed at how good it was for the cost. I had zero problems and even got a good deal on selling it in 2018. I wish they didnt discontinue that supercharger as i would probably buy another one.

I'll say it: The EV move is probably the best option they have. They have had such grief with mechanical reliability and engines that a switch to a whole new drive train is probably a very good idea. If (and it is a massive if) they get it right, Jaguar styling, comfort and refinement on an EV platform should be a pretty unique offering if (and another big if) they can rid out the next 3-5 years of rough EV market conditions.

Looks great! I’m a huge Jag fan ever since, as a primary school kid, a neighbour would drive me in his 1995 XJ Sport. Sadly it’s hard to be optimistic about the company now and I suspect they’ll follow Saab…

I had a customer with one of those. He would bring it in for annual state inspections. It would have just enough miles to get home and back between inspections. I am impressed that the fuel didn't go bad. Perhaps he'd filled it up with E0 at some point. Anyway, the amount of stuff that failed on that car while it was sitting in a climate-controlled garage for a year was pretty formidable, and I'm not talking about hoses or seals. Steering and suspension components that had been solid 14 miles earlier collapsed from sitting for a year indoors without temperature or humidity extremes. It's emblematic of the quality that sent all of the S-types to the junkyard years ago, but it is unusual for someone to be able to learn from the mistakes of others.
